K-Pop Star CL Takes It Higher With “Lifted”
It’s finally here!
K-pop star CL has unleashed the video for US debut single “Lifted,” from her English-language EP of the same title. The clip, directed by Dave Meyers, features a cameo by a super smiley Method Man, despite the fact that he doesn’t actually provide any vocals on the song.
As mentioned earlier this week, the Korean songbird has spent the last year and a half working on her upcoming American album, collaborating in the process with such dance and pop luminaries as Skrillex, Diplo and Florence and the Machine
Watch below as CL bops around the city with a brown-bagged 40 oz. and thick gold jewelry galore in her “Lifted” video. After all, this may just be her big breakout moment, stateside, and you wouldn’t want to miss that.
CL’s New “Lifted” Video Is a Master Class in the Head-Turning Hair Transformation
CL is a master of bold beauty statements—that signature heavy winged liner, the river of silver strands that whips around her as she moves. So today, when the Korean pop star released the video for “Lifted,” her first full English-language single, the onslaught of striking hair transformations came as no surprise, but rather, her latest master class in chameleonic style.
There was a row of gold pistol-shaped clips, pinned to the right side of her waist-grazing lengths, to give her windblown texture a clean, geometric line, as it glided through New York City. Seconds later, she appears in a full power ponytail that’s been slicked tight against the crown and wound with a plait—a wink, perhaps, at equally fearless icons like Madonna and Beyoncé but delivered with her own bad girl twist. Saving the most metamorphic moment for last, CL ended her freewheeling romp with a shaggy layered lob—a head-turning look that, quite literally, lifted her up to cloud nine.
CL’s English-Language Debut Lives Up to the Hype, Comes Approved by Method Man
Continuing the summer of K-pop megastars going solo, 2NE1's CL has finally dropped her English-language debut after more than a year of buzz. Not to be confused with her American introduction — which technically came with "Doctor Pepper" and "Hello Bitches" — "Lifted" has been billed as her big crossover song and the first single from her upcoming debut solo album. An eleventh-hour entry into Song of Summer contention, it's a reggae-indebted ode to sun-kissed debauchery that comes with a video in praise of summer in New York City. "Lifted" borrows from Wu-Tang's "Method Man," so, of course, he makes an appearance. How high in the clouds do two people have to be to look like they're having this much fun? All is revealed in the end.
CL releases first single 'Lifted' from debut English record
CL has been teasing her proper English-language debut for well over a year, and now the K-Pop star has officially dropped the lead single, “Lifted,” from her first stateside release.
Following the premiere of grimy rap track “Dr. Pepper,” released in collaboration with Diplo, Riff Raff, and OG Maco in 2015, “Lifted” serves as the initial cut from CL’s upcoming EP. According to her tweets, CL wrote the song with Teddy and Asher Roth (“I Love College”). Previously, the singer premiered electro-hop buzz single “Hello Bitches” in November, ahead of appearing as a featured artist on Psy’s “Daddy,” which marked CL’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.
The 25-year-old, who initially found success as part of the K-Pop supergroup 2NE1, first teased the release of “Lifted” on Instagram, posting a photo of the track’s cloud-themed cover art and confirming its Aug. 19 premiere date.
CL is currently working with American talent manager Scooter Braun on her U.S. debut. Braun has also managed the careers of artists like Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Tori Kelly.
At least she has a good PR team

Date: 2016-08-18 08:00 pm (UTC)It was indeed said that Florence and the Machine "would" collab, but since the album is not out yet (this was 1 year 1/2 ago) and nothing else was said we don't know if it's still a thing. Maybe the collab is real, it's just that nobody knows

Date: 2016-08-18 08:54 pm (UTC)Gettin' dumb on the drum like rum-pum-pum-pum
Better run, when I come, what a bomb bomb
Sippin' on coke and rum, gettin' so drunk
Everyone wonderin' where she come from?
Got gold on my necklace, gold on my wrists
Girls gettin' mad cause their boys want a kiss
Fast with the cash, I just throw it in the bag
Everything I wanna have (well I think you get the gist)
every other lyric in the entire song is taken directly from Method Man, which was released in 1993.
this isn't to say that makes it better or worse, just as a stan of both CL and 36 Chambers, i just wanted to give credit where it's due lmao

Date: 2016-08-19 12:57 am (UTC)it sucks to see people saying the lyrics are shit but I think people don't understand how much rap has evolved since 93. 36 chambers was an important album for a lot of reasons but the free-associative rapping (like not telling stories or whatever) was super new. also they were kids. meth was like 20 when he recorded method man. it's not like the pinnacle of sophisticated lyricism but like... respect the classics man. meth was always more about style and flow than lyricism anyway
I'm disappointed she left out my favourite part (not an average joe with an average flow doing average things with average hoes...)
