With an outpouring of netizen demands to remove Tiffany from “Sister’s Slam Dunk” following the recent controversy with the Girls’ Generation member’s SNS posts, the KBS show has complied.

In an official press release on August 18, the show stated that they discussed the controversy regarding Tiffany’s SNS posts with SM Entertainment. “As a result of the discussion, we have the final decision for Tiffany to leave the show, in consideration of what we agree to be the effect that the controversy had on the country’s sentiments.”

The show explained that they will be continuing with five members for the time being, without a replacement for Tiffany. “The episode scheduled for August 19 will — in no relation to the controversy — be canceled due to Rio Olympics coverage. The next airing of the show will be on August 26.”

I can't say I'm surprised after what happend with the AOA girls
Some cosmetic brand even YGed her(they literally pulled a who's next teaser). They say it's not related but you know... #coincidence

From the show perspective I can understand that they'd want to listen to their viewers

I still think the threat to her person and career are too much but I also understand that what she did was a big deal
So it's not really up to us (ifans) to decide what's best in this situation

I read those tweets and she made fair points, I don't get how people think that backlash on such a scale over after all rather stupid thing is somehow ok and well deserved.

She's going to go into hiding for awhile. I thought the company would come forth and do an official apology, but they never did.

I do think it's unfair/wrong that one news reported tried to say she was glad that Korea lost against Japan in an Olympics game though.

I suppose we aren't going to get that TTS sub unit at the end of this year... Or ever again.

She ended herself really.

i don't think it's too much. i think other people who did something wrong almost always removed or withdrawing from their shows. although the ones that i notice actually broke some laws and she didn't really, but yea...

damn this moved so fast :/ yet kangin's still out there after his nth dui. idk if she deserves for her career to be over for this and it's not my place to say really, but idt this would have blown up so much if she were a dude. i don't usually like making this parallels bc i feel it takes away from the severity of the situation, but the proportions this took are astonishing

i don't think this is a bad move, it's better if she stays out of the public eye for a while

I don't think a lot of people outside the region or even the younger generation realise what that rising sun flag means to people affected by japan during the wars. i'm really not that surprised with the response from people because it's a sensitive topic and she chose some poor imagery on a bad choice of day. she is so ignorant sometimes...

I don't think it is too much, it clearly meant a lot to the people that saw it, and considering the history between the countries, I think this is the very least that could have happened in the aftermath of it.

If there's a petition for her to commit suicide we'll know it reached those level we saw with him. Still, I read there's a lot of comments that wish her to be dead or raped, but I feel women get that kind of reactions for even less than what Tiffany did

Couldn't say I didn't see it coming. Given how much pride Koreans have regarding their country/culture there's no way they would have kept her on the show. I'm surprised there wasn't even MORE backlash if anything.

disappointing bc they had a great chemistry as six but unsurprising. hopefully this will stop the utter witch-hunt this mess has turned into, but I think she needs to do an apology recognising her ignorance and mistakes

From: [identity profile] miwa201.livejournal.com
maybe if she had given a better apology right away the backlash wouldn't have been so big. i'm baffled by how simple and nondescript her apology was. if you didn't know what it was about, you'd have no clue what she was apologizing about. and this is a big deal.
i'm guessing sm didn't want to piss off the japanese

saw this coming when shit hit the fan people were spamming the unnie slam dunk boards with her removal, she needs to lay low for a while and just let this tide over, like she couldn't have fucked up more on such an important day this is completely her fault no doubt,

but I am nhf for the ott reactions from that news anchor to netizens saying if she were killed right now that still wouldn't be enough, I highly doubt any other person (guy) would have gotten those kinds of comments

Date: 2016-08-18 04:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] icedevil0289.livejournal.com
iirc jay park did get a suicide petition and I do think it being on or close to liberation day amplified the response, but I agree with the general sentiment and the ott reactions are no doubt beyond gross. I have a feeling most of them are antis who are using this situation to justify hate and their sexist views because the rape comments are fucking appalling

"too much"???? i know a woman whose brother and father were dragged out of their home by japanese soldiers when she was a young girl. they never came home again because they were killed in an ethnic cleansing. she's still alive. that's how recent the japanese invasions were. also since that day, she's never bought anything that's made in japan or sold under a japanese brand. is that too much? considering they murdered her brother and father just for being chinese men, i don't think so.

the rising sun flag is a reminder of all the atrocities committed by the japanese. people are rightfully still angry because the japanese still insist on whitewashing their history books and publicly visiting the graves of ww2 war criminals. to the people who suffered at the hands of the japanese, using the flag is like rubbing salt on their wounds.

tiffany is just getting what she deserves. whether she ~meant~ to do it or not, the damage is done and she should pay for her actions. i have no sympathy.

Even if you're not Korean, if you know anything about the history between Japan and Korea, and the things the Koreans had to go through, and the things the Japanese government *still* doesn't want to even recognize, there's no way you can dismiss using the rising sun flag on the national day as a small mistake.

Like honestly is it easy for people to dismiss this as not being a big deal because it's not their people's history? Because their people didn't suffer under that flag?

And before anyone brings up the "but male idols!!", I agree with what staaan said above: that comparison shouldn't lead to the conclusion of letting tiffany off the hook for what she did, but rather to make male idols face the consequences of their actions just as severely.

Yeah, my grandparents survived Japanese colonization. You try witnessing air raids and seeing your classmates' limbs get blown off, and having to go from eating dinner to running for cover almost every night...

I have to admit, while Tiffany was ignorant, I also think it is definitely Snapchat's fault. Snapchat has been extremely ignorant and racist for many of their filters, like the yellowface one, and promotes this type of ignorance. There are many other users besides Tiffany who have been using that Tokyo filter, who don't know the meaning of the Rising Sun. Speaking from the design thinking point of view, the ease of use of such a racist filter is basically designed to spread this type of ignorance, it is way too easy for someone like Tiffany to fuck up in this way, even if they didn't mean it. Even Degrassi had the nerve to have a Powerpoint presentation using the Rising Sun logo in full force. If people really want to go in on Tiffany, they also need to go in on Snapchat.
