GFriend ends their Navillera era with amazing success

GFRIEND, without the high-profile backing of a major label or onslaught of promotions leading up to their debut just 20 months ago, have been owning K-pop.

Most recently, following the group’s release of their first studio album “LOL” on July 11, GFRIEND swept the music charts with title track “Navillera” and proceeded to sweep music shows too. The group took triple crowns on all three major music shows, “Inkigayo,” “M!Countdown,” and “Music Bank” — excluding “Show Champion,” which took a hiatus from its normal broadcast for several weeks.



The total number of wins for “Navillera” comes to 14. Including the 15 wins the group accumulated for “Rough” earlier this year, their total for 2016 is 29 trophies for two songs. With 29 trophies, GFRIEND is now the no. 2 group in K-pop history — and the no. 1 K-pop girl group — for music show wins in a single year.

The group follows closely behind EXO, who currently stands at no. 1. In 2015, EXO took home a total of 32 trophies with the songs “December, 2014,” “Call Me Baby,” “Love Me Right,” and “Sing For You.”

Twenty-eight wins this is a sort of record that could never miss out.

On the August 10th broadcast of MBC Music 'Show Champion' GFriend won the Champion Song for their title track 'Navillera' giving them a total of thirteen (T/N: 'fourteen' during the day I translated this) wins for this comeback. Thus it is still possible for them to break their previous record of fifteen wins. Adding these together gives them a total of twenty eight music show wins in just less than a year. We also can't deny that despite the continuous release of new songs eveery day and the increasing competition, we can consider this a great achievement for them.

About a year and a half ago GFriend has made their debut but now they already has grown into an extraordinary girlgroup.

Originally, GFriend was to have limited or very little popularity since they debut from a small-scale unknown company like Source Music Entertainment.

Upon the revelation of the name 'GFRIEND (Yeoja Chin-gu)' many netizens were sceptical to them, mocked and ridiculed them giving comments like "childish" and "What kind of group name is GFriend?" While thinking of success for them were very rare at that time.



However, on the release of their very first song 'Glass Bead', having innocent/pure image, triggered more attention from many people. On their second release 'Me Gustas Tu', they receive an outpour of attention while they also became famous for their 'power-innocent' concept because of their so-called 'knife-like choreography'.

Finally, on their third release 'Rough', they completed the 'School Trilogy' with their debut song Glass Bead and Me Gustas Tu which pushed them further by winning their very first win in Music Shows.

In addition, after the famous 'School Trilogy', they gained more hype as they change their phase with 'Navillera' thus strengthening their title as a 'Trending Girl Group' while overcoming the burden of releasing another hit song.

I usually have a hard time getting into rookie girl groups (since I already follow so many I have such a hard time catching up) but they have seriously done such a good job in becoming one of my faves, lol.

The songs are always good and where other girl groups have the tendency to skip out on hard choreography for the sake of looking pretty, they somehow get to combine those two and still come out amazing <3

Honestly, I don't care for their type of songs, but they are super talented and I always enjoy watching them perform. I'm happy for their success, although I do hope they're allowed to mature their image as they age. I seem to recall them saying they were unhappy when they found out their group name/concept?
