YMC Doesn’t Understand Why People Think I.O.I Sub-Unit’s Concept Is “Sexy”

I.O.I’s new sub-unit has released their first track “Whatta Man (Good Man),” but YMC Entertainment is not completely into the reception it’s been getting.

Ever since the teasers for “Whatta Man (Good Man)” were released, many have assumed that the sub-unit is going for a sexy concept, but YMC says that wasn’t what they were going for at all.

“This unit’s concept is not ‘sexy,'” a source from the agency says. “We didn’t emphasize sexiness at all, so we don’t know why we’re receiving this kind of response.”

“Rather than sexiness, we wanted to emphasize the charisma [the girls] can display on stage and their girl crush charm,” the source continues. “This will definitely be a performance that differs from the previous ‘unique’ concept [for ‘Dream Girls].”

Composed of seven of the eleven members, I.O.I’s new sub-unit released “Whatta Man (Good Man)” on August 9 at midnight KST.

Most "girl crush" groups are sexy bc a lot of average young girls think that's cool. Idk if they're purposely being obtuse bc they're creeps or they just want to avoid any possible legal ramifications...but the terms are not exclusive.

You know, let's give them the benefit of th doubt. Let's say that they just wanted to aim for charismatic in the same vein as SNSD's You Think. That still leaves the company looking stupid because SNSD is full of 27 year olds. Of course 27 year olds will be viewed differently in certain outfits than teens. Like, if you didn't account for IOI's age then no you aren't so much a creeper but you dumb because you should have accounted for their age. Legit, could have done charismatic in a more age appropriate way.

umm even their choreo has sexual parts in it but ok...just have them wear funky clothes like clc's debut or something and change some of the choreo. get them a song that can be sung by teenagers and not 20 year olds and then you're good to go. and i still don't understand why there are so many kpop groups with members that vary widely in age. a 15 yr old and a 20 yr old in one group? seriously? ymc probably think that gives them leeway since there are older members in the group too

well in IOI's case there were 101 contestants to be in the group so the potential age range was very wide. i think the youngest contestant was 13 or 14? and the oldest was 27?
as far as normal groups, i think companies usually choose members based on who has been training long enough and is ready to debut, but depending on the age at which the trainees joined the company, a 15 yr old and 20 yr old might be at the same "level" (according to the company's standards anyway)
otherwise if they chose only trainees who were really close in age, there might be other trainees of different ages who would be ready to debut but get stuck waiting for the next opportunity

i mean, sort of? when i think of a "sexy concept" i think of things like aoa's miniskirt
but the fact is that 99% of girl groups are put in outfits that are sexualized to some degree, regardless of the specific concept. it happens with "innocent" concepts too
so this may not be a "sexy concept" but the black outfits wouldn't be out of place in one and that's obviously concerning given their ages

I'm petty so I got into a fight about this online bc I said it wasnt okay for young girls who are minors to be wearing these outfits + singing about men.
But then I got told that I was the only one sexualizing them and that it's actually girl power. And I'm like??? No??? This is in no way shape or form girl power. These girls are being controlled and marketed by sleezy grown men bts.
