On August 1, Kim Woo Bin posted a message on his fan cafe under the name Shin Joon Young, his character in “Uncontrollably Fond.”

Kim Woo Bin said, “I apologize for coming to you so late. In this precious time, when everyone is seeing me as Shin Joon Young, I wanted to leave a message under the title ‘This is Shin Joon Young,’ but leaving one now, as the drama passes the halfway mark, I’m embarrassed.”

The actor then expressed concern at possibly having disappointed fans: “Everyone must have waited a long time for a new drama, and looked forward [to ‘Uncontrollably Fond’] all the more for the wait, but I’m worried that I wasn’t able to meet expectations. On one hand I’m sorry about not being able to show a bright and cheerful character.”

Looking back on the role, Kim Woo Bin said, “I learned a lot of different emotions through the character Shin Joon Young, and it was a valuable time during which I was able to reflect on a lot of things.”

He said, “I wanted to gift everyone with those precious emotions and thoughts that I had, and with warmth. I dare to call it a ‘present,’ but I hope that when you are watching the final episode, you will have felt at least a little of what I intended.”

Closing, Kim Woo Bin thanked fans for always loving him despite his shortcomings, and encouraged everyone not to be oppressed by the heavy heat.

Kim Woo Bin is currently filming for a new film titled “Master” alongside a heavyweight cast, including Lee Byung Hun, Kang Dong Won, Oh Dal Soo, and Uhm Ji Won.

Article: [Exclusive] Kim Woo Bin, "I'm sorry that the drama isn't living up to expectations and that my character isn't bright"

Source: Sports Donga via Naver

1. [+482, -76] Kim Woo Bin is doing alright but his competing drama 'W' is just so fresh. I find myself watching episodes twice over. It's the first time I've seen a drama where I can't predict what's going to happen next.

2. [+407, -65] Aigoo, seems like he's been emotionally suffering for it.. ㅜㅜ

3. [+529, -113] 'W' took a lot of his viewer ratings away but 'Uncontrollably Fond' was never a drama that was meant to do well anyway. The drama itself is so boring... I don't know why KBS hyped it up so hard from the beginning of the year.

4. [+322, -61] The drama is barely 10 episodes in and the plot is so... I guess he read all the bad articles about it too

5. [+137, -33] Scriptwriter Lee Kyung Hee isn't what she used to be. Her writing isn't as good as 'I'm Sorry I Love You' was. Her weekend drama with Lee Seo Jin and Kim Sun Hee was a flop too and this one is heading that way as well.

6. [+52, -11] Lee Kyung Hee's dramas have always been depressing though

7. [+38, -6] Well the drama isn't over yet, and not every drama you do has to be successful. It's more important to show variety as an actor.

8. [+60, -17] I don't know why they invested so much in pre-recording this drama. The scarves and all is so hot to watch in the summer, where did the 10 billion won investment go to?

ooooh :(
I think the writing is good for what we usually get with kdramas, the problem is that the story is not that interesting and has be done several times already.

Why is he apologizing? Shouldn't the production be apologizing to him? Did he produce the show?

the plot is moving too fast! we gonna get stuck with 7 episodes of filler trash like the directors last drama

This is my concern tbh. It's good, but it feels so close to being a train wreck that I watch every episode with a sense of excitement and a sense of foreboding. (and also just try not to make sense about about things and reactions)

I'm so scared of what's to come, how are they going to top what they've already shown? I have faith because I loved QIHM from start to finish so I trust the writer, but I'm trying not to have my expectations too high.

judging by previous dramas of this writer + the fact that the team had almost half of scripts ready before starting... i think there is a very slip chance that they will fuck up

Some people's hate for this show is so OTT. It's fine if you think it's boring or you would rather watch W, but some people act like it's the worst show ever. It's not even the worst show airing at the moment nor is it worse than either lead has ever been in

this is so STUPID

he didn't apologize, nothing in his actual message said anything about apologizing for the drama, literally the only thing he said was i hope i did well enough to meet your expectations, i know there were fans who wanted light, fun stuff so i'm sorry this isn't that kind of show, i learned a lot through this drama so i hope you guys watch it till the end
LITERALLY ALL HE SAID. WATCH THE SHOW AND THANKS.
that message was only for the members in his fan cafe, it wasn't supposed to get out and some douchebag of a reporter leaked it and made it out to be so fucking dramatic, like woobin calls his show a flop!! and everyone is like aw it's not his fault that show sucks, but he shouldn't say shitty things about his own project when it's still airing tsk tsk tsk WHEN HE DIDN'T

fucking makes me angry, he wrote it so well and it takes one fucking dumbass reporter dying for click bait and it looks like he admits the show is a flop.

Yikes, if this is the truth, there should be an edit on the post. Because you're right, he could get ripped for people thinking he's bashing a show that's still on.

This makes me feel somewhat sad, he really shouldn't be apologizing. You won't always be able to live up to everyone's expectations. He's doing a pretty good job in this drama anyways and it's the writers who are to blame here, mostly.

But I agree with the commentor above me. This apology is taken out of context and it's not him saying the drama is flopping/bad (even though it kinda is)
, but rather him thinking the role and tone of the drama isn't appealing to his fans as much as he hoped.

It's sad to me that actors apologize for a show failing to meet ~expectations. He's hardly in control of the creative direction. He's a good actor. So, I'm assuming his performance is fine? If so, he has nothing to apologize for. =(

The comments are reminding me that I need to start W, though...

So I started watching the show and he's fine in it. I think he has some ways to go as an actor, but it's a job where you're constantly improving your craft (if you care enough, and he obviously does). TBH, he's gorgeous but I feel like he's one-note and does best playing the bad boy like in the Heirs (that show was otherwise total crap imo). I'm mostly sad for Im Joo Hwan and Im Joo Eun because I think they're killing it with the little they're given (the latter is especially sold short). I'm much more interested in their storylines than KWB and Suzy's characters.

I agree with your whole comment, especially the last part. I basically decided to watch for the What's Up reunion of Im Joo squared but their storylines aren't getting much airtime (especially IJE, I think she was in like 20 minutes total of the first 6 eps??)

OP, your title made me laugh a lot. I don't think it's an awful drama, it's just boring to me. I watch it in the corner of my screen while I'm at work and if I get distracted with things and miss the subtitles, oh well. It's basically what I expected from the synopsis and teasers so I really can't complain.

I wish he would stop picking roles where he's the "bad boy" he can play the opposite well and I wish others would see that and not think of him as a one role actor

lol the reporter took it far if that is what she/he worded for the title of the article since Woobin didnt apologize for the show flopping but rather apologize for not showing a cheerful character that his fans are hoping for.

BTW, if he is feeling the heat, then it should be tbh since Lee Kyung Hee's dramas usually receive rather high ratings 15% to 20%. And one netizen is wrong on Wonderful Days flopping as it aint. The drama recorded an average of 20% an episode if I'm not mistaken..

Date: 2016-08-03 01:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] tempestdance.livejournal.com
that's a weekend drama, and for that time slot 30% is the usual average. 20% is a flop.

I'm liking UF.

Both leads lack at some scenes, but imo they are doing fine.

But the story, the story!!! So overdone and slow. No wonder people went to fun W. Btw, W acting isn't that better. Just the drama is fun and people use W to drag down UF.

W is doing fine because of the writer from nine and queen Hyun's man.

I watched 2 episodes. It wasn't bad...it just didn't hook me. Whereas "W" hooked me with the first episode.

My expectation of "W" was low and "Uncontrollably Fond" was high...but after watching them...I'm more into "W" and don't know if I'm going to continue with "Uncontrollably Fond". I didn't realize it was going to be a melodrama. Given my limited free time, I'm going to choose "W" for now.
