I might have to actually care about 88rising because this is the most cringeworthy thing I've ever seen. I wasn't ready for him to know T.O.P's name, nor was I ready for him to say that T.O.P only wants the top. :|
When I saw it, I knew that I was going to laugh. I was crying at work during the times between his "freestyles" where he would talk to the cut outs. That Taeyang just I can't.
These young rappers are so fucking weird, man. I'm 21 (so the 'right' age for this gen) but I still feel out of it at points.
His lil bit about T.O.P really sets the tone for everything lol. I really feel for the people who are seeing him for the first time because of this, truly a product of the Twitter/Tumblr generation.
Yeah I'm 26, so just a tiny bit out of the generation but mostly still in touch with it. It's becoming more about the sound vs the lyrics which is interesting, I wonder if that will open people up to hiphop from other countries. For example recently there was a thread on the hiphopheads subreddit talking about rap from other countries and there was a lot of khiphop thrown around.
Yeah the T.O.P bit destroyed me, it's ridiculous and I hope people can see it for the comedy that it is, I can't take lil boat seriously ever though his verse on Chance's "Mixtape" is the most solid thing he's done.
I used to hate that (the whole, sound-over-lyrics thing) but I've come to realise that they can co-exist, instead of it being one-or-the-other. I think it helps that the bad rappers seem to be aware that they're bad now, so it's like an inside joke between those that pay attention. Like in the XXL Cypher, they were mostly trash but I actually enjoyed just seeing all these young guys genuinely having fun... it's kind of infectious. I feel like it will open the doors a bit to more international rappers getting attention, especially since the younger (American) ones who're influencing the scene seem to be more welcoming of it too.
Anyone that takes Yatchy seriously needs to look into him and see why you shouldn't and why he doesn't want you to lol. He's just an 18-year old having fun, just like Desiigner etc. I was pleasantly surprised by his verse on Chance's mixtape too, it really fit so well.
Oh yeah XXL showed a good idea of where the current scene is. I mean the most icon of the verses was for sure Desiigner and his was entirely just like a "my voice works well for music, even if I don't have anything to say." They're just hype and want to party and that energy is really infectious. I absolutely love Desiigner when I'm hanging out at a party or a club, but outside of that he isn't my go to unless it's for jokes or snapchat.
Yeah for sure, I agree I just know people see stuff and don't think first that maybe someone can have fun and be ridiculous just for laughs. This new gen will likely never produce a huge caliber rapper, but I think when we move to more lyricism, since it's all just a rotation, people are going to miss the party feel that this generation has.
I meant to delete and repost (but I fell asleep and now I can't remember what changes I wanted to make lol) but I still have it, so I'll just add it here lol:
I think wanting the genre to focus primarily on certain things all the time really strips some identity away tbh. It's that type of thinking that really killed rock as a huge genre in the mainstream imo. It's great to have songs reminiscent of 90's rap/hip-hop, but you've also got to accept that with a new gen comes a new idea of how to do/present things. Desiigner's fun when you listen to him, and funny when you don't; he has a good time no matter what. Rap has been a consistently present genre for so long because of that willingness to innovate and change sounds.
People take things too seriously, and then if something's bad they don't wanna see that it's intentional. It's much more fun to criticise all the time lol. People will definitely miss the carefree nature of this gen at some point.
A friend of mine mentioned that music tends to reflect the time it's in, and I think we can see that in rap rn. There's obviously a lot of serious things going on in the world, socially and politically, and the carefree nature of this music seems to be serving as the opposite of that atmosphere. Especially since now you can voice your opinions on Twitter etc. there's less of a need to do it in the music. Our gen's grown up with a fear of the future because it doesn't seem designed for us (in a variety of ways), so the music made by us, for us and consumed by us tends to lean towards a lane meant to escape that stress. It might not even be a conscious choice, but it's there.
Sorry if that was a bunch of badly explained nonsense lmao, I clearly have a lot of feelings.
Lil Yachty is a terrible "rapper" who recently got big for...I dunno I guess being terrible? Apparently he's a Big Bang fan though and that's how this came about.
Why don't I have a cardboard cutout of top? That just seems like something that I, of all people, should have by now. I'm honestly a little embarrassed I don't have one yet. I should really look into that.
I wonder where you get them, I imagine they must be up to buy, let me use my google-fu for good, I'll be back in a couple of minutes and see what I find.
EDIT: It doesn't look like you can find one for idols outside of like ebay and stuff, but you can make your own http://www.fathead.com/custom-life-size-cut-out-instructions/
Lol, thank you for searching for it! I know I've come across a GD one before, and the only thing that crossed my mind was to draw on it, not take it lol
He's awful, but it's kind of charming the more and more I see him. He has fun, and I really appreciate that, his happiness is pretty clear and infectious.
Lol, I expected this to be like 5 minutes. Color me surprised when Bae bae ended and the next song started and I realized the video was 20 minutes. Lawd he even did La la la.
I am crying at these cardboard cutouts and balloons lmfao, it's like he threw a birthday party and nobody came so he's like screw it i'll just hang out with bigbang i don't need y'all
