Basically, due to SK's installation of the THAAD system, China wants to take Chinese money out of Korean hands by halting Idol promotion activities in China and heavily limiting the ability to perform there.

Very curious how this will affect groups with multiple Chinese members/activities.

Sources: @nctdojae on twitter, and reddit users confirm translation and Daum confirmation that this is pretty much happening

How do they define idols?
Cause chinese fans are gonna be pissed if they don't get their usual dose of KSH or Jessica for instance

Ooh, ouch. But says nothing about Korean actors...

I wonder what the Chinese fans have to say. Also, the idols that posted their stance on the China Sea...that sucks for them because now not only have their promotions been restricted in China, but the Korean netizens aren't happy with them.

It doesn't seem that Chinese members' individual activities will be affected though. Especially those who have their own studios in China, like Victoria, will be fine, I guess.

i really wonder how this will turn out. (maybe a stupid question, but isn't china going to lose money too by implementing this rule?)

I wonder that as well since I'm assuming companies that use really popular idols/actors for their CFs get a boost in sales. I personally don't think the ban is going to last but who knows.

Note: According to the second article posted, this is just for "a certain time period", and it doesn't apply to programs that have already been approved. (Not sure if that covers concerts as well.)

It's suppose to be retaliation for THAAD and affect all SK entertainers not only idols, I suppose actors will be hit the most, because they are more popular with public than idols, and I couldn't find if this ban is only about media appearances or all activities like concerts and fanmeetings.

I'm wondering how this effects idols who already have projects coming up in China. Also, Yoona just got a cf deal in China announced yesterday, lol.

I wonder how this effects Jessica since like all of her business is in China basically. And does it only apply to people who have Korean nationalities (I think Jessica has a korean passport now, someone correct me.)

I feel like c-idols will be safe though. They are still Chinese at the end of the day.

I'm pretty sure Sica has an American passport (or at least she still had one last year). Maybe she has an American and Korean passport or she could just have a "working visa" for Korea, which has to be renewed every six months, I think!

Also, I don't know if Sica still falls into the "idol" category, because she mainly is a designer, model and actress now. I mean, she didn't even promote "With Love, J" publicly, but just had small concerts/fanmeetings where she also sang.

Question: how much of the Korean economy relies on hallyu in general particularly doing business in China? Will it have a significant effect on Korea as a whole if they instill this ban?

According to netizens, the Gaming industry exports are way more profitable than the entertainment industry. The government invest way more in the entertainment industry though, they want to spread their "culture" to the rest of the world.

Edit: I forgot, Korean's companies like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Asiana are 10x bigger than all the entertainment companies combined. Korea is also known for building ships.

bye bye nct beijing, here comes nct tokyo. i'm sure sm will find a way around regulations that'd be put in place, tho i don't want them to put rookies through the wringer. if exo's gonna have to cancel concerts that sucks, but i think they're focusing more on japanese concerts right now. i think there were also rumours of a smtown in china planned later this year. idk it will be interesting to see what happens

Wow considering how many idols have strong fan bases in China / Chinese money does fund a lot of idol activities - like this does seem like it might cause bigger problems for a lot of groups. also - isn't 'the show' basically a Chinese/Korean show thing? What happens to that then?

Okay but right now all I can think of is all those xenophobic comments made towards the Chinese by Korean netizens (as a Chinese myself they did hurt me a bit to see my ethnicity put down even if there was a basis to it) and I'm actually surprised this didn't happen sooner. There's so much xenophobia both ways and with more Chinese going into the Korean industry (and vice versa) I'm surprised there haven't been bans before just on the basis that "they're Korean". Wow - what a world we live in...)
