this might sound like a weird comment, but i've noticed that taemin's gotten better at not moving. perhaps he's learnt how to emote better, i used to find him awkward when there were time gaps between movements (a transition?) he would sometimes add his own popping moves or a signature look-at-my-sexy-face-while-i-slouch-and-walk-backwards movement just to fill in the blank space. he sort of does it here too at 3:07 in the vimeo video and around 3:24 (https://youtu.be/WQQJ7zBzYJs?t=3m24s) in the mv, but it's minor and doesn't look out of place.
am i making any sense? i like his flairs but they sometimes throw off the balance of a choreography and he seems more comfortable not doing his little moves these days.
As a dancer I understand this comment and agree to it.
Stillness in dancing and emoting is a skill that for many dancers is hard to grasp especially when they are focusing on getting the technique and movement down perfectly
I have done classical russian ballet for 8-10 years and it wasn't until one of my final performances that I truly understood how to emote, it was kinda like a light switch turned on and i enjoyed filling each movement with an emotion.
Tae is a super perfectionist when it comes to dancing especially with technique and fancy foot work. He could be coming into his own style and realizing he doesnt need to relay on these crutch dance moves to fill up space anymore.
dancing is so psychological (for me and many dancers) it wouldnt surprise me if he is becoming more comfortable with himself and gaining more confidence overtime. thats how it worked for me and my dancing has continued changing since then.
trdl: I agree and understand. Dancing evolves as a person's mind evolves.
glad you understood despite my poor articulation xD
i'm not a dancer, how important are facial expressions? imo taemin has also improved his ability to convey emotion and intensity through body movement alone. he's not particularly facially expressive here (or, rather, we don't see his face too much) but he looks contemplative and i can feel his energy more so than when he's actually trying to look intense. he doesn't furrow his brows/scrunch up his nose and make his go-to serious face (https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/2e/38/21/2e3821ea0eb3ffa3b3a7298cb781ee96.jpg) either - that's been a habit of his ever since love like oxygen. i wonder what changed. i'm too curious.
I'm not a dancer but I too got exactly what OP meant. I really like hearing things from the prespective of actual dancers though and you're probably right that his dancing is simply evolving with his mind as he become more comfortable and confident with/in himself. Definetly signs of an indivdual coming into their own which is a pleasure to watch as a long time fan.
my god.. this all sounds so interesting! do u have any light-ish reading material on the stuff like 'stillness within dancing' or the psychology of dance?

can you extrapolate on that? Isnt it basically like being an actor on stage, completely grossed into the role. Just that instead of dialogues, ur body is moving?
I just finished watching this for a second time. I'm usually not sure how I feel about Taemin's dancing at times, but I think it's because the choreography doesn't let me see what I feel he can do.
I'm glad he's working with other choreographers who are able to challenge him, because the end result is a sight to see. This choreo in particular is very expressive in a different way than we're used to seeing from him and I love it. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
I always love watching Taemin dance solo. When they're together as a group, my eye is still always drawn to him, but when he's solo it's something else entirely. I envy the fact that he can make it look so effortless, and I love the song (first time hearing it).
I loooooooooooove this song. its so nice!!! and it fits so well with taemin!! <3
Choreo is lovely. I like how lowkey the choreo is. it doesnt feel as 'powerful' as press your number or drip drop or danger. but its more 'lyrically' stronger? more emotional? i think...?!
i love this so much would love to see it even more with koharu???
and i agree with above comments abt how taemin's gotten better at emoting ;; and this dance really helps too bc koharu's choreos are really expressive and emotive more with the bodies too
omg thank you for the vimeo upload OP! hate that other countries like to region block stuff. i was so captivated by the mv and i'm so glad SM uploaded to their channel. i really, really love this dance. i feel it's the best one he's done so far. nothing wrong with stillness and subtle moves. does anyone know who choreographed it?
no problem :) i'm american so the video was blocked in my country but i found a way around that lol
the choreographer (http://fytaem.tumblr.com/post/146993216471/shinees-taemins-resolve-for-his-solo) is Sugawara Koharu. he's the same guy who Taemin is collaborating with on Hit the Stage (https://twitter.com/interstaellartm/status/755223174485118977) !
After watching Koharu's choreography, I've come to understand how much more difficult this choreography is compared to Taemin's previous dances. This choreo requires a lot of emotion and expression, which not all dancers can communicate as well. I watched Koharu's choreo and I was floored. I want to see her version of this as well.
