If you’ve heard Oh My Girl’s recent single, “Windy Day,” you might have noticed some South Asian musical elements to it. Some netizens are protesting the behavior of Oh My Girl members and their fans during the “Windy Days” promotions, accusing them of cultural appropriation. The criticism is not limited to Oh My Girl and their fandom, as fellow girl group FIESTAR has also been put on blast for referencing Indian culture when talking about “Windy Days.”

While neither the dance nor styling for the “Windy Day” MV contained any notable Indian or South Asian elements, fans picked up on the musical influence, titling Oh My Girl as “curry-dols” and their dance as “the Aladdin dance” (despite the fact that Aladdin is a mythical figure in Middle Eastern folklore).

Oh My Girl, picking up on the popularity of the Indian theme, noted that they found the title fitting. During a fan meeting on July 2, they covered a Norazo song called “Curry.” The problem? The song is a hodgepodge of offensive stereotypes. While Oh My Girls did away with the brownface as used in the original MV, they kept lyrics such as “It’s yellow, spicy, and although it doesn’t smell nice, Taj Mahal,” and “Shanti shanti, yoga fire! I love hot curry!”

In another video clip (which has since been removed), Oh My Girl’s Seunghee was purportedly shown to have imitated “Indian people moves” in a humorous way, and being edited to wear a fake turban. In another defunct clip, YooA and Hyojung, after being asked to show off some makeshift Indian choreography, performed the dance to great cheers.

During a recent talk show, FIESTAR professed their admiration for Oh My Girl’s “Windy Day” concept, also referencing the “curry-dol” title.

The result? Some netizens are asking for more cultural awareness, while others believe it to be a non-issue.

Huh as a desi I found the sample to sound nore Arabpop esque than Indian but I can see why people would think that. The Aladdin title is annoying but I dont really blame people for confusing it with India since most people only know of it through the wildly innacurate Disney movie.
That song they covered is a fuckig mess and they're a disgrace for choosing to perform it.And they need to stay far aeay from turbans and fake "bindis" and the like. Those are sacred synbols not props.

The song itself would be one thing but all the really fucking extra stuff after it is vile. It's like khiphop and their antiblackness.

Also Fiestar is cancelled, I'm not feeling it no mo'.

Serious question: Where is the line drawn between inspiration and appropriation? Are the two forever linked now, with one always tied negatively with the other?

I mostly ask in this case due to the song and dance in the youtube clip, not the rest of the situation.

A lot of this is news to me regarding OMG and things involving South Asian culture. Still, YIKES. I've never heard the song, and I honestly don't want to Google it, but do they seriously not know it's offensive? Why would anything like that be funny?

Everyone seems to be pissing off their international fans, no please, proceed.

Here we go again with people mixing up Arab & Indian cultures. You'd think with the internet people would be more aware but NERP. It's always "Let's us just mash up two totally different cultures for our own entertainment & offend every actual Indian and Arab along with it."

Listened to Windy Day for the first time. It's a typical refrain that people like to use when going for ~*~oriental~*~ in their music, but I wouldn't say that it's offensive in itself, just a little uncreative. Not here for things like curry-dols though, wtf.

I can't get through the cover song performance though. jfc. I just....I mean, it's nothing new. It's really nothing new, because mocking indian stereotypes while still profiting from things imported from there is hardly new, but it doesn't mean that I'm not still extremely frustrated and disgusted

i feel like it will only make a difference if kfans speak up but i have seen some south asian fans who feel like theyre being made fun of, so its not just tumblr/white ppl who are offended. not even bashing omg either, just disappointed.

Yeah, maybe it's just really painful for me because I grew up in England too, and this sort of stuff is literally everywhere, and it's literally "how to be racists to indians 101"? I just...and yeah, nobody thinks windy day is inappropriate, it's everything afterwards.....

I've been seeing the "but SK is really homogeneous, it's not their fault they don't know!!" excuse a lot still. Actually, it is their fault. Whether it's the girls' or managements' or both is up to interpretation.

In this day and age, there is absolutely no excuse for not educating yourself, especially since cultural appropriation has been talked about in mainstream media many times in recent years, and the K-pop industry is definitely aware of this. Stop being lazy.
