I have to say, the Flashback Fridays coming up for July and August have some of my favorite songs! I’m so excited! But I’m getting ahead of myself, lol. I look through this week’s Friday on different charts in a past year, and share the top three songs. And then I pick out two more from the top ten as honorable mentions. The top three for the 1st Friday of July, 2011 are seriously serving up some jams!

#3 T-ara “Roly Poly”
This song was HUGE. This has to be their biggest hit, right?

#2 2pm “Hands Up”
When I think of this song, I can only think about that part of the choreo where they take a shot. I…I like the booze.

#1 2NE1 “I Am The Best”
Step on me with those 6 inch Clou Noeud Louboutins, Park Bom.

Honorable Mentions

#5 8Eight “Covering Those Lips”
Not my favorite song by the trio, but God, they always sound so good! They’re not around anymore, aren’t they?

#6 Rainbow “Sweet Dream”
This is another song I forgot existed! If you asked before, I couldn’t tell you anything about the MV or even that it’s Rainbow’s song. But after hearing it again, I totally remember the song now and even some of the choreography.

t-ara were so huge and i seriously hate how people downplay it and give t-ara absolutely no respect. snsd got me into kpop but t-ara solidified my stay and their music is incredible even till this day. for you is one of my favourite songs ever

T-ara has one of the best discographies in Kpop tbh. All their title tracks are bops and their releases in general are super polished. I reckon some of the girls lack in stage presence but I can't really understand why Korea treated them the way they did!

Absolute first album was amazing and then they did have really good minis. Their bsides are super worthy. Wae ireoni was a bop too. I did not enjoy them as a performers much but their music is one of the best

I agree! They are one of my favorite Kpop groups and ever since that bullying scandal they have been more or less ignored. Their dance music is the best.

Thanks for these posts, they're really nice. They always leave me a little flabbergasted. Like, in my memory, Roly Poly was released waaay before I am the best. I'm definitely losing track of time, go figure!

At that time lots of new groups appeared (like secret and rainbow) the most successful girl group was T-ara and their were doing a retro concept, and I got into kpop when WG where at their peak, so I was a bit bumped about how they weren't part of all this boom in the idol world, and I remember thinking "I've been into kpop for too long... to many new groups right now" lol wouldn've known that would be me every year since that.
I preffer this version of the MV for Rolly polly.

For me 2pm never realesed an song/album after again and again/I hate you.... or maybe is because I really didn't pay much attention to them after Heartbeat... it's been a while and I havent realized

Im shocked that Minzy is only 22. I really hope she gets to shine as a solo artist. She gave her youth to YG and they slept on her.

I very recently got into 'Roly Poly' and it really is a monster! Speaking of 'monster' I remember going into the post for hands up on here earlier this year - sometimes when I find myself liking older group songs I look for the omona posts on them - and that one had ALL the comments XD

I remember how huge Roly Poly was, it was everywhere in the "online kpop community" within hours of its release. I still dance it with my cousins in family dinners, it's such a great song

I can't believe I remember the releases of these ones, it seems like time never goes forward but...damn

Thank you for theses posts !
Roly Poly is simply amazing. I'll forever be bitter about T-Ara, they were so huge and they still have good songs now... at least they're getting recognition in China.
I listened to IATB so, so much, lol. Another group who could have done SO MUCH.
I miss concepts like 2NE1 and First Absolute Album, I really hope one of the new gen groups (which I already enjoy a lot) would grow into such badass concepts later on

this is my fave flashback friday thus far. roly poly roly roly poly was my jam that year (i'm a huge fan of anything shinsadong, really, but it's one of his more fun songs), and then i am the best is like a kpop institution. hands up was one of the few 2pm songs i liked... so yeah, jamming here

@ OP 8eight disbanded 2 years ago when their contract was up :<

I've pretty much loved almost every t-ara releases but i've never managed to like them as a group (i like and follow some members though). I think t-ara lacked a true musical identity? Their voices are always so autotuned, layed or pitch highed that it was always hard to recognize some of their voices. Or they would use backup vocals by other singers. Which is common practice in the industry but i'll always side eye sugar free (Shinsadong tiger probably conpensated l.e. for her guide vocals but i doubt she got any revenue from dls and such even though mbk kept her vocals in the verses...) I mean they are idols, i'm not expecting them to be singer songwriters or anything. But ccm/mbk would just pick up whatever was popular at the time. i think they've said that before that KKS would decide on a new concept based on whats popular.. Like for roly poly came out right in time when ppl were gushing over the movie sunny for example. So to me, t-ara's musical direction was just all over place :/

Sorry for the long comment, idk why i took this post to rant about frustration with t-ara lol

ooh, I agree. T-ARA was one of the first K-Pop groups I got into, but I never was that into the individual members. and then just a year or so after I started listening to them they had the bullying scandal, so....

Hands Up is such a jam for me, it always cheers me up instantly.

IATB reminds me of my boyfriend though, he left for the UK when it was released and apparently it played on the airplane radio for both of his flights. He was like, "Your one group with the WWE belt in the beginning played a lot. It's kinda catchy." lol

I like Hands Up. I like the remix more, though.

I love Sweet Dream! Rainbow has had so many amazing songs. Their live performances of this were really good, too.

I looove Roly Poly, and I always think it would be fun to learn the dance.
Hands Up was one of the first boy group songs I remember liking a lot and it's still a fun jam. I didn't really pay attention to boy groups back then.
I think IATB was on Youtube's front page once? Anyway it's still amazing ;; I remember being dazzled by all the metallic shine and glimmer in the MV, lol.
I discovered Sweet Dream only three months ago and it's such a great song. I should check if Rainbow has other songs like that...

omg i remember not knowing or caring about many groups yet when these songs came out and i randomly clicked on the roly poly teaser video because the thumbnail was cute and the song/concept were so amazing that I began to wait for the actual mv lol. this song was my summer jam.

also i liked hands up. it was very good.

even though i am a huge fan of 2ne1, i didn't like the iatb teasers but the mv/full song were flawless.

My elementary school students always start singing "Hands Up" when I tell them to show me their hands for any writing before a test. It's hysterical.

Missing the true best song of 2011 though (Bubble Pop).

But Roly Poly and IATB were definitely next on the podium. Hot Summer too. Such a great year for kpop.
