"Taeyeon is Set to Own Summer With 'Why'" (Fuse)
The Girls' Generation leader is looking fiercer than ever with a new EP that boasts a mix of collaborators and sounds
Taeyeon made her first solo release in the fall of 2015 with with the stunning seasonal anthem "I," and today the Girls' Generation leader shows that she can own summer with a new track set to soundtrack the season.
"Why" fuses a delicious combo of sparse guitar strums and a woozy tropical-house beat. But like "I," the production is an ornament for Taeyeon's powerhouse vocals, which deliver precise harmonies and an emotional punch that many usually find missing from EDM cuts. At times the music does recall DJ Snake's "Middle," but the track finds a way to distinguish itself thanks to the vocal performance.
This song clearly has appeal past Taeyeon's native Korea: To date, the country hasn't let EDM jams like this have strong longevity, but we have a feeling America (and beyond) will totally embrace this all summer long.
The accompanying music video for "Why" also showcases a new side of Taeyeon, as the K-pop star gets goofy in a Los Angeles hotel pool, eats ice cream and plays on the wings in children's park, and lights fireworks in a desert, all in the name of letting go of a past love. Tae also displays a fiercer fashion style, rocking Moschino crop tops and a long flannel shirt that's is plastered with the phrase "Queen of Beers."
Why is the title track from Tayeon's new EP, which boasts a slew of genres and collaborators. Rising R&B singer Dean features on "Starlight," while Tae's Girls' Generation band mate Hyoyeon pops up on "Up & Down." Taeyeon previously teased the release of Why by releasing the bouncy "Starlight" as a buzz single featuring the two singers playing rebellious (but adorable) lovers. Watch that below, and stream Why on Spotify now.
Also, OP highly recommends MRJKPOP's entertaining album and song reaction/reviews on youtube (not just for Taeyeon) :
Thoughts on this review: My favorite song other than Why was also Good Thing, although I don't agree that it should've been one of the title tracks, I thought it was actually smart to pair up a duet/ballad like Starlight with a strong EDM track like Why. Give 'em a bit of the familiar ballad sound Taeyeon is known for along with the more experimental, hard-hitting song you weren't expecting from her.

Date: 2016-06-30 06:36 am (UTC)Same same! I dont like the unnecessarily OTT stans who react on YouTube, but I do like in particular Dylan Jacob, because his reactions are funny and his bias is Taeyeon as well lol. But i remember this nice mv reaction to I last year by two girls who cried at the end cuz of how happy Taeyeon seemed at the video and omg I was crying with them :((( it was a nice little moment in my stan life lol
But I do really appreciate reactions like Mrjkpop. He seems to be a little more insightful with his reactions, commenting on more than just aesthetics. But i have heard reactions about him being particularly biased about SM artists.

Date: 2016-06-30 04:10 am (UTC)Good Thing was also my #2 song on the album but Fashion was also really good along with Night. Interestingly enough Why, Good Thing, and Fashion, were all produced by LDN Noise. It makes sense since those were my top 3 sorry Dean lol. I like MRJKPOP's commentary on it, I've been trying to address the disconnect between her vocals and the EDM background (but unlike some omona comments I still do think it worked together, it just didn't scream EDM to me and I was trying to figure out what sound it gave off) and when he said that it definitely gave that folk indie vibe I totally got it lol
While I really loved I and it's still my #1 Taeyeon release this album just speaks to me more than I ever did and I'm so glad I pre-ordered this album becausethe only songs I was meh about was Hands on Me and Up and Down but I don't particularly hate it lol 8((((
I have so many feelings about this comeback I can't wait for tomorrow to see my fairy queen doing choreo

Date: 2016-06-30 05:07 am (UTC)Yeah it's not surprising but it is disappointing that Korea didn't go as crazy for Why as they did for I, though once Taeng shows what she and Kyle Hanagami came up with for the live performances, people might get more excited? I think she still has to prove to Korea she's not just good with ballads :/
I'm really happy about the album, too. I just wish SM would stop promoting Hyoyeon, or really anyone in soshi, as rappers, it's just really not their thing. I actually like Hyoyeon's low-register singing voice.
