Man, I had a hard time to understand everything they were saying. I guess my english is not as good as I thought, but it's probably because I'm not used to the irish accent.
It's always funny to me how omona hates Bangx3 but in Korea the song was extremely popular and everytime I see non kpop fans reacting to it they seem sooo into it.
It's not like omona is a monolith, but yeah the general sentiment is that the song was awful and didn't deserve to be so popular. I personally enjoyed it for what it is, a dumb but fun song. I found G-Dragon screams in the song hilarious (in a good way), it just puts me in a good mood lol
I have a suspicion that it's bc most non kpop fen are not used to the kpop sound, so they're responding to that more than the song itself. bangx3 isn't great compared to a lot of better kpop songs (shit, a lot of big bang songs are better) but if you've never heard kpop before it prob seems pretty striking
i usually dislike reactions..always it seems just ppl trying to be funny by either playing dumb or being rude? even on food reactions! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ i die at 'asian britney spears' and 'asian spice girls' tho it seems like a strange comparison to me since clearly very different styles lol
The Britney one was because they had a high school setting and girls in short uniforms like "Baby, One More Time" but IA about people always saying "It's like Korean (insert western pop star/act)" with things that aren't related.
The "omg they're multiplying" comment always annoys me when people react to K-Pop. Here it really annoyed me because Sistar only has four members, like... not an overwhelming amount.
Also, referring to them as dolls is very gross.
I mean, obviously it can be "wtf?" at first, but I feel as though people mostly overdo it when they're exclaiming just HOW weird it is. But maybe it's because that's because it's not my personality to be like that (or anyone I know).
mte at your last paragraph. kpop wasn't all that weird to me when i first saw it? i just thought it was like 90s western pop but in korean. but i'm also asian american living in a state w/ huge asian population, so the element of othering/exoticism wasn't there for me, and i think that informs a lot of non asian reactions to it
That's exactly what I saw and heard (90's Western pop) plus, after Lady Gaga in her prime... nothing could shock me tbh. A lot of western pop has way weirder videos than kpop.
I may have initial thoughts of "oh, that's different", but it's never been outrageous shock like how some people react. I'm a white girl that's from a very white county in England, so I don't have that same experience lol.
Though I think maybe tv shows and movies I watched growing up, may have prevented that element of 'othering' to be completely prevalent in my view of things.
re: last paragraph, i think that's entirely possible. i just have a hard time understanding why westerners in these vids are always so extra about kpop like it's the weirdest nuttiest thing they'd ever seen. maybe they're just trying too hard to be funny? either way it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable with all the lowkey xenophobia/racism*
*yes ik that's not always the case but seems to be a lot of the time
I think it's trying hard to be funny, but on that same level I think it exposes stereotypes/bigoted views they may have. I think it's possible to be obnoxious, without being offensively so.
I totally agree about the xenophobia/racism. I don't always pick up on it straight away, or by my own realisation (for obvious reasons) but sometimes it's too glaringly obvious for anyone to not see. You can see it in the comments that dehumanise the idols; they may be 'sold as a product' but that doesn't make them any less real. Referring to them as 'anime come to life', as 'dolls' etc is just... nagl.
There's also this incessant need to refer to people/groups as the "Korean version" of someone/thing else, and that's always off to me. Especially since it's not a focused point (their ability, clear musical influence etc) it's always shallow. Not outrageously racist, but just unnecessary imo.
ita with that last point. i admit when i first discovered big bang i called them the korean backstreet boys, but seeing as i am a huge bsb fan, that was actually a compliment, but it's also an apt comparison as they are a five-member boy group with distinct personas and a similar sound, at least in their early days when their songs were more bubblegum 90s pop than they are now. but a lot of these comparisons are made with a kind of condescending "west is best" undertone, usually by people who have no idea wtf they're talking about (e.g. the endless bieber comparisons despite the idol in question being nothing at all like bieber aside from being a pop star who ostensibly appeals to teenage girls). i wouldn't take issue with someone who likes the western pop idol making the comparison based on actual similarities in music, image, etc., but most of the time people are just being lazy and throwing out the first names they think of.
someone in another comment mentioned the try guys' reaction video, one of the few that came off funny without being offensive. i have a humor blog in which i make fun of my faves all the time, so there really is plenty to mock about k-pop without having to reach for the same tired old jokes that nearly always come up in these videos.
