Hip hop artist Verbal Jint has publicly admitted to getting his license suspended for driving under influence.

On the evening of June 19 KST, the artist posted a message explaining his recent DUI incident on his Instagram.

He writes,

“Hello. I apologize for delivering bad news.

“I want to confess that four days ago, I was caught drunk driving in my neighborhood with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.067 percent. My license is expected to be suspended for 100 days.

“I have no intention to come up with excuses since I’m at fault, and I’m deeply regretful of my reckless actions and neglecting the possibility of a drunk driver becoming an assailant.

“I believe this is something that both cannot and should not be hidden, hence why I’m writing this post that makes me feel ashamed. Once again, I apologize for showing a disappointing side of myself.”

Reports have revealed that Verbal Jint was pulled over for driving under influence in Mapo District, Seoul at around 10 p.m. on June 16. He was driving his own vehicle. He has admitted to the charges and taken part in the police investigation.

Hmm. At least he's not making excuses for himself or trying to cover up what he did. Hopefully he learns from this.

I read a netizen comment on one of the translation sites that said 'remember, each drunk drive is attempted murder' and i know that's exaggeration but it really drove home to me how bad it is because yeah, each time you do it you are putting everyone around you as you drive in danger.

I'm really disappointed in him, he was the only male k-rapper i really paid attention to because he seemed quirky but clever and not really here for the ott-ness of hkiphop. Time will tell if this 'apology' is accurate (if you were really sorry you wouldn't have done it in the first place) but i don't trust it.

Honestly, this is how I was always raised to look at it, so it sucks that because it's so damn normalized, basically 70% of people I know have done it.

Youre better off listening to drunken tiger, yoon mirae or epik high tbh

I'm sure they have many good songs, just avoid "Movement /Revolution" by Yoon Mirae and Whitetip by Epik High.

Oops I forgot. Is that the one that yoon mirae uses a homophobic slur in? What's white tip about? These were just some of the artists that came to mind that seemed less tryhard

personally i prefer epik high's stuff from before they joined yg. after their first release under yg i haven't listened to their stuff since. i have to check out shoebox though. you should check out yoon mirae and tiger jk's solo stuff too

I'm not really into some of ymr's older stuff? I appreciate her rapping but i'm not into ~actual old school~ i guess. I like what she's released in the last few years but that's overwhelmingly her ft. Tiger or tiger and bizzy haha.

Agreeing with some of the comments on netizenbuzz (http://netizenbuzz.blogspot.se/2016/06/verbal-jint-confesses-to-drunk-driving.html) saying that he only confessed to get ahead of the media to lessen the backlash.
DUI is a shit decision, everyone knows it is wrong but these idiots choose to do so anyway for whatever shit reason they come up with when drunk. It's so simple to apologize afterwards to save face. Glad he got caught.

Very "I'm gonna criticise myself so I seem more sympathetic in the public eye".

That being said, I do hope he takes something from this that'll make him not repeat this action. I didn't really like him anyway (some of his lyrics are nagl), but this is just beyond. I'm also glad there's some kind of punishment, even if it's not enough imo.

Same and this is why it cracked me up when Tumblr started hardcore stanning for him after SMTM because I was like... y'all don't know anything about him outside this show, do you LOL

That whole time was so strange to me, because that's when I first read about his lyrics and that seemed pretty noted? So it seemed as though it was being brushed-under-the-rug, because it didn't fit their ~cute, shady moon Jint.

Especially when those same people were (rightfully) criticising BlackNut for his lyrics, like, have some consistency. I saw some called out and they spouted that whole "that was in the past" "it's just a song" *insert generic excuse here*.

This always jumps straight to mind when I see his name mentioned, they reference rape/sexual assault:

"Kid without manners who was loudly rapping with so-so skill
Run away when (s/he) sees us. (we) feel satiety after eating [word that also use when saying “taking away woman’s virginity”]
Idiotic [much negative word than this] hip-hoppers.
4WD & Verbal Jint’s carefully planned [negative vibe] duo rape. Like it, like it?
You can even feel it while getting (raped)?"

That's not even shady, that's just downright problematic.

I was hardcore stanning for him because I loved his releases with Taeyeon. :( Oh well #byefelicia

Idk, I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing that he admitted to it before the media found out. If he hadn't, he'd been criticised for not doing it as well.

Nonetheless, I am really disappointed in him. I just cannot ever understand how anyone could consider drunk driving.

I don't see anything wrong with admitting it to his fans beforehand and taking responsibility. People would still think he was full of shit no matter if he did it before the press got to it or after. In either case, he still looks like a person who has no regard for the lives of others nor his own.

Oh man dude

i think korea needs to really get their shit together about drunk driving, the fact that so many older people, mainly men think it is ok to do it, and younger people are hesitant to call them out for it because of seniority.

To me, drinking and driving is simply something that should not happen... ever. Even more so if you're a grown ass ADULT, you're fully aware that you're going to drink then make sure you have a safe ride home, how hard can that be? Stop playing with people's lives on the road.

I've always worried about my family on the roads, I worry all the time when they drive. Then you have fools like this driving intoxicated and getting lucky because they don't hit people. Well you can't get lucky forever, one day one of these celebrities are going to kill someone or die themselves.

This shit isn't funny at all. It's not an accident either.

Honestly I want to give him the benefit of the doubt even though I won't forgive the fact that he actually did this but at the same time he has shown nothing but being a mellow and chill person. Still doesn't change the fact that he did this but he's one of the nicest hip hop artists I've seen in k-music

That word he uses, 강간, directly means 'rape'.

I don't want to sound like a massive oppalogist but do your have any other example? Preferably one that's more recent (I saw a youtube of this song that places it in 2009)? I tried digging up some dirt myself, but my investigative powers are limited to Google hits.

I don't condone casual usage of rape as punchlines or drinking and driving. VJ screwed up pretty badly, risked himself and more importantly the general public and should be punished accordingly and without favourtism. But if he hasn't been a deliberate misogynistic creep in the last 5+ years, I don't want to label and treat him as one.

Drunk driving really changes the way I look at someone's personality tbh. I am someone who drinks, often and in excess LOL I get full on shitfaced fairly regularly and still even on nights where I've blacked out, I've discouraged or talked people out of trying to drive (I myself am not a driver). This is why I'll never buy the "Oh well I was drunk, so I wasn't thinking about how dangerous it was." argument because even on nights that have ended in me vomiting the entire contents of my stomach I have never, ever, ever reached a level of inebriation where I ~~magically forgot~~ drunk driving is bad. Ever. Not once. I have people I deeply care about who have driven drunk but it still makes me look at them differently. Getting drunk makes me do shit I wouldn't ordinarily have the guts to do (including stupid and impulsive things), but it has never made me do something that wasn't in me already.

I agree so much with this. It seems like some people treat being drunk like a 'get-out-of-jail' free card. You're still responsible for your actions, drunk or not.

Yep, the ol' "When the liquor gets in me I turn into another person! I'd never dream of doing that sober! It's not me!" no, you'd dreamed of it, the alcohol just gave you the courage / shitty impulse control to go through with it.

and this idiot is a law degree student... ugh, it's soooo cheap and easy to get one of those replacement driver in korea, i had dinner with friends a few weeks ago and those drivers showed up in less than 10 minutes. i don't understand why people even bother to drive after drinking when you have convenient services like that?

The problem is is that hes a celebrity so he probably feels he can get away with a lesser punishment if at all since being drunk is also used in korea to excuse crimes. Its just so much entitlement and disregard for others

Wait, what is Korea's BAC limit? Are you telling me in Korea it is under the USA's limit of .08? I feel like WAY more people should get busted in Korea.
