It's yet another first for NCT and this time it's the first birthday we get to celebrate with them post-debut. Today, June 14, our beloved main vocal and oldest hyung, Moon Taeil, turns 22/23, giving us a great reason to celebrate him and his dorkiness. Because SM has banned gifts and fan projects for NCT, there will sadly be no photos of Taeil surrounded by dozens of cakes. Instead, we'll just send all our love and try to praise his achievements so far. Consider this a part 2, individual mini-pimp post. You can read more about Taeil in the previous pimp post.

According to this article on instiz, Taeil was accepted into Hanyang University's Applied Music department. At the time of his recruitment competition for the department was 407: 1, making Taeil that successful 1. However, he dropped out one week later when he was accepted into SM so he could focus on his training.

woah @ that university drop out dedication. i think it's lucky for him because we know that even with beautiful voixe, we still don't know when will we debut (or maybe ended up like juno (hope i spell his name right).
there's some awkwardness in his eyes whenever he smiles so i always thinking that he's nervous when maybe not.
forgot to add that i like how soft-hearted he is

I hear it a lot with the up10tion guy and as soon as they debuted i was like who is that guy that sounds just like baekhyun? but unfortunately i still don't hear the similarity with Jaehyun. His voice is much fuller, richer and deeper than Baekhyun's imo.

i think taeil is so talented but i have to disagree, jaehyun and doyoung both have very unique tones and doyoung especially has a really impressive range that i can differentiate from other sm artists.

Jaehyun's tone is similar to Baekhyun from exo! And I agree, Doyoung is a very good vocalist already so I'm excited to see just how much he'll improve with practice and experience.

I've been vocally trained since I was 5 (which I don't believe makes my opinion any more legitimate than anyone else's, it's just that I've been exposed to variety of voices), but as far as the technical aspects, all three vocalists are above average, especially for rookies/their age range. They have a lot they need to improve on but they have distinct voices and personal techniques they utilize when they sing that many singers at their level don't have. I can't really analyze their their voices at this point because I don't think they've shown their full abilities yet but hopefully they'll be able to showcase their skills soon. I personally don't think they possess the "typical" SM voice, of course they're going to use similar techniques because they have the same vocal coach but 1. It's not necessarily a bad thing because out of most of the kpop companies, SM actually teach their singers how to properly use and preserve their voice, 2. Many of their artists develop their own style after they perfect the technical aspects of singing but I do agree that Jaehyun sounds similar to Baekhyun. I know Baekhyun is a light lyric tenor and they have an almost identical tone but Baekhyun is slightly more stable and his head voice/upper octave is a lot stronger than Jaehyun. Doyoung is my favorite so it may be because I'm slightly biased (I will admit to this!) but he is undeniably the most stable member of NCT's vocal line. He's incredibly consistent when it comes to both his lower register and falsetto and he has an unbelievable range. His tone may not be as unique to the casual listener but he has a very recognizable voice and I believe his greatest strength lies in his ability to support his lower/mid/high registers and how he's aware of what his voice can do. It usually takes awhile for me to get into a group vocally but as soon as I heard Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Taeil sing, I was sold on the rookies lmao.

Regarding Baekhyun and Jaehyun, I think they only sound similar in their chest voice. Upper register? Not so much, although we haven't heard much from Jaehyun. The big difference between them is their vocal fach. Baekhyun is a light-lyric tenor, as you said, which makes his upper extension stronger, whereas Jaehyun's voice is placed lower, making him a baritone. So their tones may sound similar sometimes, but their voice types are particularly different.

Seriously, my fave voice from SM right now. It used to Kyu, but this guy's voice is just sooooo amazing. It is soft, emotional and strong at the same time. I still listen to 'Because of You' repeatedly since the song is just so beautiful. SM always managed to capture people with this kind of voice. I hope they will not sleep on him.
