SM Entertainment & Jongro Academy are setting up a 'KPOP International School' in Gangnam, Seoul, and will be enrolling new students next year. ‘KPOP International School’ is a middle and high school education process and will enrol foreign students and local students to teach practical skills such as Applied Music, Dance, Stage Design, etc. and school subjects like Korean, English, Mathematics, etc. together.

SM & Jongro Academy revealed on the 26th, “The interest and popularity of KPOP is increasing worldwide, and during this time where Hallyu culture a competitive industry of the nation, we will be establishing a tentatively named ‘KPOP International School’ in order to foster global culture talents. Both parties are planning to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the morning of the 27th for the establishment of the school.

‘KPOP International School’ is mainly placing an importance on attracting international students. 70% of enrolled students will be filled by Chinese and other foreign students, while the other roughly 30% will be picked from local Korean students. As much as the fever for Korean celebrities and TV programs is burning in China currently, they plan to actively attract highly interested Chinese middle and high school students.

Both parties revealed, “In order to select international students, in November we will open Enrolment Information Sessions, On-site Practical Evaluations, and more in China to gather new students.” New Korean students will be picked through various admission tests, etc. during the month of November. ‘KPOP International School’ plans to enrol about 300 to 400 students with a combination of local and international students.

All this while, celebrity hopefuls have, under the name of a 'trainee', have only enrolled in a school but failed to attend most classes, but both SM and Jongro Academy have revealed that in 'KPOP International School', students will be able to grow as 'celebrities who study', by emphasising on school and studies. In this school, the practical performing arts classes will be taught by SM, while Korean, English, Mathematics. Sciences, Society, etc. will be taught by the lecturers at Jongro Academy. However as 'KPOP International School' is set up as an alternative school, in order for graduates to have their education recognised, they will have to separately sit a qualification exam and pass that in order to have the qualifications of a middle school or high school graduate.

For students that want to advance overseas, 'KPOP International School' will also provide the US middle and high school curriculum. If students complete a US curriculum in Korea, a program will be introduced to acknowledge the US secondary education academic ability. The students in this school will choose between either the Korean or US curriculum for their education.

SM and Jongro Academy have said, “Although the ‘KPOP International School’ will be first established in Seoul, depending on the reactions we plan to establish a 2nd, 3rd, international campus in China and other countries,” and “it has the meaning of exporting both Hallyu and Korean education at the same time.”

it just seems like they're setting up a school for their international trainees (I was pretty sure they already had a partnership with an international school already? where Jessica, Tiffany, Amber etc went?) but I guess since they're focusing on China they need a school that's less US centric?

if it was any other company I would think this was a pretty neat idea of dealing with the issue of educating young, foreign trainees but bc it's SM.... nah.

All these SM ventures lately... unless they have an excess of capital, aren't they spreading themselves too thin? Hope someone has a cohesive vision for all these random new investments.

Lol glad this wasn't around when I was in high school because I probably would have wanted to go. I'm imagining a dream high right now. Also I remember reading that Michelle Lee's company is affiliated with her university so I guess this is like a middle/high school idol version so SM can pick out the young naive talented ones

I think they should do a collab with some real schools instead of some random academy if they really want to make this work.

what parent would want to send their kids there...

I really admire sm's passion and desire to innovate though.

I think this is a brilliant idea. I can't wait to enroll. I foresee that not only will I learn math sciences etc, I will learn how to lip sync oral presentations, counter lawsuits and properly match my neon skinny jeans with plaid print shirts. Sign me up for this quality education.

sounds like sm's way to create the next gen of employees and stuff. i assume they're already going to be taught and instructed according to a curriculum approved by sm and if they show potential they're gonna get signed on. stage design sounds cool. i'd love to work in sm's creative departement lol the school's probably going to be full of fangirls tho but if it makes them money...

I mean it kinda just sounds like the academy they used to run..? But now they'll also be capable of offering like a full highschool curriculum for their international trainees/students. Considering how much traffic there is at SUM (Coex) for the courses/glamor stuff you can pay for, I'm not surprised they're gonna bring back the academy. And I feel like times are different now, the new generation of idols come from affluent/wealthy backgrounds and were encouraged and supported through training, of course SM would want to take advantage of that lol
