That side of you that creates songs you want to do and enjoys imagining looks like a young boy.

J:: I think looking like a young boy is a big compliment. I think that kind of appearance is necessary for someone who’s an idol and an artist as by nature. However, I think there are times that I act like a kid to get away with doing something. I should say maybe I’ve become thoughtless. But because I now have quite a bit of experience in social life I know the extent of the boundary of what is allowed. I wish to maintain this image of a young boy as it is even when I get older.

How was today’s shooting?

J:: It felt new as it’s been a long time since I did shooting outdoor. Unlike producing songs or performances, I think pictorial shooting is not something that I play a leading role in creating the result. I try my best to digest the things that was prepared for me. As I don’t consider fashion as my career, I think I am able to enjoy works like this more.

Fashion and music go together.

J:: It is correct but what is bred in the bone for me is music. I never have thought things other than writing and doing music is my talent. I don’t even keep myself open to possibilities either. Maybe it’s because I’m very firm about what I want to do, I even reproach myself that I need to focus on music and there’s no time for me to do other things.

It’s already been 8 years since debut. You’ve matured enough to release an album not only through SHINee but with your own name.

J: To release an album is something exciting. This album is much more meaningful because I put in songs that I want to do and also tried to have unity in terms of genre. If my previous mini album was about throwing my hat in the ring to show what kind of music I like, I put in stories that could draw emotional sides and sympathy in this full length album based on acoustic sounds. This album is the embodiment of my direction in music finding the genre, sounds and stories that I like and enjoy during the 1 year and 4 months of time.

What is the biggest charm of artist Kim Jonghyun when you think about it yourself?

J:: That I’m a member of SHINee. I have pride about my team.

Out of the tracks in the album, which one do you feel most attached to?

J:: "White T-Shirt". In the lyrics, there’s a story about a girl in a Rolling Stones t-shirt who’s pretty. It’s not a song that I worked on personally but it’s humorous when you listen to it. I actually cannot pick just one out of the songs that I made because I had hard time making all of them.

How do you get inspirations when making songs?

J:: My last collection (Story Op.1) was entirely my stories. On the contrary, I work on songs of trendy sounds for mini album and full album. I make stories through imagination based on research and attempts on music genre that’s in trend. Music becomes totally different just by a slight change in a simple thought.

What is going in your head when you sing or doing a performance?

J:: It depends on the places. Especially for solo album performances, I participate even in the producing so there’s a difference in terms of my position and the use my energy compared to performing with all SHINee members. For performances in small theatre, I try to communicate with every one of the audience. For big venues, I think about the performance or how to release the energy. If the stage is big, it’s important to convey the energy even to the people far away so that audiences can respond.

When writing lyrics, what are you efforts in trying to form a bond of sympathy?

J:: The context should flow well. In other words, I have an obsession about making sure it sounds right. Purposely mixing honorific and impolite speaking is okay but I cannot stand highlighting pronunciations according to the rhythm or writing lyrics that are out of grammar to match the syllables.

It sounds like you have paranoia.

J:: It could be in a way. So during the music video shooting for my title track of this album, I was able to comfortably act a man who has paranoia. If you watch the music video, you can see that he cannot even touch the handle when opening doors and only walks on white lines when crossing the street.

What did SHINee members say having the release of this album ahead?

J: Although each SHINee members work hard individually they don’t let it show because they’re relatively relaxed. I can say that they are mature. I can see that they probably supported me in silence saying "He would have done well" because we have trust in each other.

talking about paranoic behaviour, its facinating how he writes lyrics with perfect grammar on purpose .... korean teacher noticed before but i thought that was her inner shawol showing, not that jjong actually was paranoic about correct grammar lol

ohhh. that's interesting and, tbh, not too far fetched. he's mentioned not that long ago (i think around march?) that he has to have everything perfect in his work and little things like how he avoids stepping on cracks on sidewalks so he's probably channeling his personal traits there.

I'm loving the style of all his teasers a lot, but I cannot stop thinking about how the whites are not white, the blacks are not black and the lack of contrast in the MV. I gues I have my own obsessions too lol

I'll prob be the odd man out but I actually like a lot of pics from the mag shot (at leat he doesn't look sickly like in the one he did during his solo debut) the pic I could do w/o is the one where he's in the green apron tho lol

Anyway my anticipation for the alb has grown that much more with the implication he's playing a character & there is a story that connnects all the songs together.

Aww, I love how despite being talented and self-sufficient enough to go solo if he wanted, he clearly loves his group and it's always saying it out loud. Akgae fans can stay pressed tbh.

I feel like the creative director behind Dazed pictorials is an ugly & they're tying their hardest to project their brand of ugly onto the world.

I mean...I love Jjong but these clothes are a hot boo boo mess.

On the other hand, I really enjoyed the interview.

SHINee is a group that I don't "stan" per se, but I somehow still manage to have all of their music LOL. They seem to just get better with age. I'm honestly curious about how their careers will continue to develop because they are already so musically solid...like...what more can they do?!
