Taeil’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
It felt new, and it was fun. Standing on stage instead of just in the practice room, I can find what I am lacking in and do better in the future.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
Mark’s freshness (laughs). Mark’s personality is optimistic and perfect.
You must have felt different revealing yourself first through your solo OST song for ‘The Merchant: Gaekju 2015′.
I was the first to get such a great opportunity from rookies, and so I participated in it. I thought the public would judge all of rookies based on my song so there was pressure, but I was also excited.
Do you still get nervous in front of cameras?
After seeing myself on broadcasts, [my nervousness] seemed to be quite serious (laughs). I am going through image training to be able to broadcast comfortably.
Just like your lyrics ‘hold my hand’, who are the people who hold Taeil-ssi’s hand when you are having a hard time?
The NCT U members, and my little sister who is three years younger than me. When we talk over the phone sometimes, we can relate, and she listens to me well.
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
I think it would contain the many things I experienced this year as well as my honest thoughts about how I should live out my future well.
Taeyong’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
As much as it was a new experience, I also had lots of thoughts here and there. I am building a basis on continuing to show my improved self.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
My skin is weak so when I get a lot of light, it quickly tans so I am jealous of Jaehyun’s pale skin.
Wasn’t there a lot of burden on opening up the song?
When I first heard ‘The 7th Sense’, I really liked it and thought that it was a song that fit my voice well. I gained the confidence that I would be able to do it well. Although singing live is difficult, I am continuing to practice.
To Taeyong-ssi, who had a long training period, which member became the most handsome?
Mark. When he first came in as a trainee in his second year of middle school, he was a totally innocent baby. Now his body is better than mine, and he’s become manlier and cooler.
When you wake up in the morning vs. Before you fall asleep; during what time period is your face the most handsome?
After our schedules, when I look into the bathroom mirror, my face’s condition seems to be the best then (laughs).
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
The company staff members and trainee friends all gather [in the end of the year] and have an end of the year party. I want to attend it as a debuted artist under NCT U and enjoy it with everybody.
Doyoung’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
After releasing our song, the one week we had before we would be performing on music broadcasts, I would bite my nails and count down every single day until d-day, and those days felt like it would never pass, but afterwards, the one month passed by so quickly. I was happy all throughout the month.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
As an artist who stands on stage, I want to learn Taeyong hyung’s stage presence. I feel like our stage looks more powerful because of Taeyong hyung’s charisma so I’m thankful for it but at the same time I would like to have it as well.
What do you think is NCT U’s strong point that other boy groups do not have?
Every boy group comes out with a character, but NCT U has a concept of ‘infinite openness’ and ‘infinite expansion’ so I think our charm and special weapon is being able to show that much more variety of colors. When I first heard of the team’s idea, there was an unfamiliar part to it, but the more I thought of it, the more pride I got of it.
Did your older brother, Gongmyung, who is also an actor congratulate your debut? What did you guys talk about?
My brother, who is two years older than me, is warm and caring. After I finished my first ‘Music Bank’ appearance and first radio, I saw that he had sent me a text message that said he saw the broadcast well, and how he wishes that the two of us would succeed one day to pay back our parents as quick as we can. It’s something that he and I talk about frequently. I was quite thankful to him.
The two songs feel completely different. Which song do you like better?
This is a question like ‘do you like your mom or your dad better?’ [to me]. I like ‘Without You’ better (laughs). Because it’s still awkward for me to act cool on stage. ‘Without You’ seems natural even when I’m just smiling brightly.
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
I would like if all the NCT U members had an end of the year party together. And because it’s good to dream big, I want to win a rookie award as well. I also hope to be preparing to show a different side of us. I have the biggest desire of being able to prepare for the next album, practice singing, etc., with an enjoyable mindset.
Ten’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
Every single time I perform on a music show, I learn more. I dreamed of becoming a singer in Korea after seeing Super Junior seniors so there are still times where I can’t believe [that I debuted]. As time passes, I am starting to feel more and more that I have debuted.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
Doyoung hyung’s Korean (laughs). There are a lot of things I want to say, but it’s still hard. When I see hyung organize and talk well, I envy him.
If you were to invite your Thai friends to Korea, where would you take them?
It’s a place I haven’t even been to yet, but I want to go to Jeju Island together. Then I want to show them Thai traditional architecture, like the Bukchon Hanok Village, and show them different landscapes.
Is there a place one must go when in Thailand?
I like the sea. Ever since I was young, every holiday, we would go to islands. I want to recommend Phuket vacations. I like swimming, and I want to try snorkeling.
You seem like a joker off stage, but the Ten on stage looks very chic.
They’re all Ten, but the bright and joking around side seems more like me. Because my smiling and non-smiling is face have such different atmosphere, I sometimes get misunderstood. Even when I’m feeling okay, I would hear ‘Ten, are you angry?’.
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
Compared to when I was a trainee, I did this better after I debuted, what kind of effort I put in to improve what I lacked in, looking back into the year, I think I would write everything.
Jaehyun’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
I still can’t believe it. It was a short but very meaningful one month. I thought a lot about how I should work harder and do better in the future.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
Ten hyung’s flexibility. From the time when we first practiced together, his stretching was different. Each time I was him, I was jealous.
Within the one year since you were MC-ing as a rookie, it seems you’ve matured a lot. You seem more manly.
When getting ready to actually debut, I had to practice different things from when I was just a trainee. After being assigned a song and dance that fit us, I worked hard to do my best to make it really mine. I tried to find a new side of myself.
What did your father, who would play music around you often since you were young, say about ‘The 7th Sense’?
He said it was really good because it was a new genre. Although it was probably a really strange song to my father (laughs).
I feel that Jaehyun-ssi is a very straight (t/n: as he follows the rules well, does everything perfect, seem to have no imperfections) young man.
My member hyungs, who are the closest people to me, and friends wouldn’t say that about me (laughs). Although I work to live a straight life, I have clumsy sides of me as well.
Is there a secret to making good stir-fried spicy pork?
It’s of course hand-taste (t/n: a way of saying the hard work + thought that goes into making food). Because I was curious how my mother made it, I asked her for the instructions. As I made it myself a few times, I ended up getting a sense. I like cooking so I look up recipes sometimes.
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
Although it’s a wish, wouldn’t we be receiving a rookie award? (laughs) I wish I would expect a lot from myself after feeling proud of debuting and working hard all year long with no regrets.
Mark’s Interview
It’s been exactly one month since your single was released. How do you feel?
Everything was fascinating, new, and fun. Although there’s a lot of difficulties because I still lack a lot, I think [promoting] as my un-perfect self like this is still fun. Moving on, I wish to see, learn, and experience a lot like I did this past month.
Is there anything you envy of your NCT U members?
Taeil hyung’s charms. He’s lovely and pulls people in.
What’s the best part of being the youngest?
I get adored by everybody, and when I’m put into a situation that I’m not sure of, there are a lot of people I can ask, and there’s less pressure. I have a lot of reliable hyungs besides me that I can depend on.
Cute vs. Handsome. What do you like hearing more?
I’m not sure (laughs). But if I had to choose, I like cute more. Actually, I like both.
As a rapper, what do you think is your god point, special weapon?
Not only rapping, but I liked singing, dancing and playing instruments on stage; I liked everything. So I’m still learning and practicing a lot now. I’ve heard that in everything you do, you need perseverance, so I would like to say that perseverance is my special weapon.
If you were to imagine your diary entry on December 31, 2016, what would it say?
Not much different from when I usually write in my diary: to not lose my roots within this year and to continue to have a heart that likes music and being on stage. And because my mother’s birthday is in December, I think I would write that I bought her a present from the money I earned myself (laughs).
