BIGBANG’s T.O.P is facing criticism for a photo he recently uploaded to his Instagram.

The rapper uploaded various photos on May 13, showing him dressed up in a black suit at a foreign restaurant. However, one of these photos shows the star with a lit cigarette to his mouth, causing many to question the photo.

Although T.O.P has been shown smoking cigarettes in past magazine pictorials to show a more mature image, netizens are critical of his decision to upload such a picture to his Instagram, where many young fans have access to the photos. They argue that impressionable teenage fans may wish to copy him after seeing such pictures of him smoking, and while it is he has to right to post freely, he should do so responsibly.

T.O.P was previously embroiled in a different controversy back in March, when he was caught on camera dropping a cigarette out of a moving car by fans in China. Because both controversies involve smoking, many fans express disappointment in his behavior. He has since deleted the photo from his Instagram account.

but so is smoking. I get a little hurt inside when I find out that my friends or one of my faves smokes but that is for personal reasons. but tbh i feel like top does it to look cool~ & socially? it seems like so at least & even though that is still stupid that means there is no addiction included

OK as a smoker and someone with anxiety etc smoking is closely linked with mental health, a high percentage of people with anxiety related problems smoke. TOP has been known to suffer anxiety attacks.

not accusing you personally as defending it but i know a lot of people actually do defend tobacco as self-medication for mental health issues and it's just sad. people would be rightfully outraged if an idol said "i have clinical depression and alcohol helps me cope." he ought to get proper treatment for his anxiety but, considering the stigma of mental health problems in korea and globally...

I do use smoking to cope, self medication should not cause 'outrage' in cultures where there is mental health stigma there is high cigarette and alcohol usage. The fact that everyone is just like 'oh what a disgusting habit' and doesn't seem to be outraged at mental health stigma etc is pretty weak.

using a substance that causes physical health issues to cope with mental health issues is absolutely, 100% a problem. someone with depression should not cope with a substance that causes liver damage, just like someone with anxiety should not cope with a substance that causes lung cancer.

I am nit saying it isnt a health issue, I am saying substance abuse and self medication is a side effect of mental illness and where there is decent mental health care there is a marked reduction in all drug use includinf alcohol and cigarettes.
