The Korea Communications Standard Commission (KCSC) will reportedly impose sanction against TV program “SNL Korea” over a same-sex kiss between Block B’s Zico and Park Kyung.

Block B became a guest on the TV program’s March 26 episode and in a portion dealing with a fan fiction, the two members kissed. The KCSC received complaints from the public over broadcasted contents, specifically that the scene was “inappropriate” for supposedly promoting homosexuality among the youth.

Recall that last year, the KCSC formed a committee to investigate cable channel JTBC after it aired a drama scene of two girls kissing on “Seonam Girls High School Investigators.”

Homosexuality remains a taboo subject in South Korea.

Kim Kwangjin, member of Korea’s National Assembly, claimed his support for the LGBT community in Korea was the reason he was defeated in his party’s primary election last month.

“Plutocracy and vested interests were among the reasons, but the biggest one was my support of the LGBT community in Korea,” he alleged in a column in Huffington Post Korea.

“I was never a famous human right activist or a crusader. I was also not the kind of politician who supported the LGBT movement. Nevertheless, I tried my best to speak for the things that I believed in, such as the right not to be discriminated against,” he said.

When the election began, Kim said, a video titled “Kwangjin Kim, the number one candidate who encourages homosexuality” spread.

“I suggest that we put an end to this period of hatred and discrimination. We should talk about how to make our country a place free of discrimination,” Kim suggested. “We should talk about how to make our country a place free of discrimination.”

[+358, -12] Hul...

[+265, -19] Ugh..

[+39, -4] It really was horrifying seeing two young men blatantly kiss each other like that. Should've just left it at a pretend kiss instead of going all out.

[+27, -2] Omg

[+25, -4] What the heck ㅡㅡ gross

[+21, -3] What're they doing;;;;;;;;

[+18, -7] I get that this is a variety but there are things you should and shouldn't do, they're being gross tsk tsk. Did they have no other scenes to air instead?

[+18, -4] Life's hard, eh?

I really don't get the logic that it's okay for these dudes to pretend to kiss or to kiss "by accident" but an intentional kiss that looks intentional between two consenting adults? That's crossing the line!!!1! Like, what? What difference is being made?

I think you pointed out the difference pretty well in your comment :/

because homosexuality is only ok if it's treated as a joke or when there's no actual desire between the two parties according to them

yeah well... this sort of turns zico's problematic ass into a low-key resistance icon. or not. the point of the plot wasn't really this part, p.o. was the main, right?

the whole issue is so distant looking from here... hope it's going to be a none-issue in a few years.

for the homophobic people, just admire the alphago scene or the rap market.

Dear KCSC & clearly homophobic netizens:

It scares me how nowadays there is still so much discrimination in every aspect, is it that difficult to accept, respect and love?!

I bet these netizens would not find two girls kissing that repugnant.

Except he's not. This is SNL using homosexuality as fan service. It's basically appropriation. Using it as shock value but undervaluing and not acknowledging the real situation or implications. It's not okay.

This is sarcasm considering Zico has used homophobic slurs before

SNL's studio audience doesn't seem to have had any objections.

There's a big difference between fan service and actual support for homosexuality. SNL is using homosexuality for their own gain, not showing support for it. It's like appropriation in a sense.

Of course; it just amused me to contrast the audience's oohing and aahing with the sniffing of the "Netizens". In fact, I wonder how many other "Netizens" expressed their enjoyment of the sequence rather than disgust for it - that is, just how representative this small sample of comments is. Not that slash fic writers and readers, for example, are immune to homophobia when it comes to the real thing: the audience may have simply taken it for the joke it was intended to be, rather than cheering a tiny moment of unclenching by an uptight country.

:/

This just makes me think of that blind item a while back about the two male idols in love in secret who were almost outted, not to mention all the LGBT people in Korea as well. If people are this ridiculously upset over a joke kiss then their everyday lives must be super hard.

Get with it SK. You can't //promote// homosexuality, but what you can do is be a more open minded society that kids that are homosexual (or anywhere else on the lgbt spectrum) feel safe and comfortable coming out knowing they have support

ANYWAY, Kyung and Zico got a whole son together like let them kiss

that politician's stance sounds so mild. he literally says that people should not discriminate against lgbt people and not that everyone should be gay and has to. isn't snl on cable in korea and also a late night show? why would this be seen by the youth at large? it's disgusting that people would rather their children feel isolated and repressed by getting rid of representation in the media than be truly happy :/

It's problematic when Korean shows use homosexuality as shock value or to satisfy fan service. It's very problematic. It's incredibly problematic when fans eat it up and show support for it, because behind the scenes in the real Korean world it's not supported. It's still very much swept under the rug and coming out isn't an option for a lot of people. The double standards have to stop. You can't like two guys kissing and then ignore the real situation. THIS is proof of how awful the reality is.

I love all your comments in this post. If anything this shows how depressing life must be for LGBT people in Korea right now.
