Pann: IU vs Park Bogum

"Same concept but different reactions. IU got hate for it but Park Bogum got positive reactions. The double standards for male and female celebrities... it sucks."

1. [+103, -31] Wanna know what's funnier? IU said in an interview before that picture became controversial that she purposely smudged her lipstick to express the image of a cat ㅋㅋㅋㅋ and what's even funnier! is that IU got hate for her lolita pictorial but Red Velvet's pictorial was straight up named '21c Lolita' but no one ever mentioned it. If people hated on IU genuinely because lolita was the issue, then a lot of other girl groups should've been dragged with her.

2. [+91, -22] The double standards are real. IU gets hated to the point of people calling to exile her but a man doing the same concept gets comments like 'boyfriend type picture', 'attacking the hearts of women', etc. Such a hugely different response.

3. [+85, -23] What pisses me off even more is that even before the picture became controversial, IU said in an interview on October 20th, "There's a picture I took with my lips red for the Chatshire concept since Cheshire is always smiling like that. I wanted to express that and even give the feel of a cute Joker. The lipstick was meant to show that laughter isn't always just about happiness."

4. [+41, -14] People just wanted a reason to hate IU;;

5. [+39, -12] This too ㅋㅋㅋ IU herself said that the smudged lipstick was meant to represent Cheshire's ripped lips but everyone blamed her for lolita. Well where are all the lolita accusations when a male idol does it? Why do they never get controversies over it? Double standards, that's why.

6. [+34, -13] IU shouldn't be blamed for lolita concepts when all female idols incorporate bits of it into their concepts. Even male idols do shota concepts... anyone who hates IU for it looks dumb ㅋㅋ because I'm sure their own bias groups have done concepts like this as well

7. [+26, -11] Also in IU's original drawing, Zeze does not do the pin-up girl pose... that was later edited by the director.

8. [+24, -13] People just want to hate her ㅋㅋㅋㅋ the double standards

If a female idol does a lolita concepts, she gets dragged for it, some may even go in on the photogapher, if a male group does a shota concept....the only sounds that are heard are squeals from hundreds of fangirls and boys. The lolita/shota concepts are creepy as fuck and it always makes me a bit uneasy, especially given how the industry is loaded with creepy adults that love taking advantage of those younger then them. And I mean both male and female idols, it 100% needed for females in this industry to be protected, but the same should be for males as well.

I'm trying to think back to some boy groups that may have done shota concepts, I can't really think of any.....bts debut doesn't count....but still side eyeing that fact they let a then 15 year old jimin main focus at the time be his abs....

And also.....there really isn't anything appealing about the photo of the guy smearing lipstick on his mouth....like what makes this boyfriend material???

did you mean jeongguk? jimin was 17/18 in 2013 (doesn't make it any better though. Also: Jeongguk was 15)

Some people consider shinee's debut to be a shota concept, since they were marketed to attract a much older female audience when most of them were underaged (14-18) at that time. Also, didn't teen top have a video in which they were paired with a much older woman too? I think most of them were around the 15-18 y/o range as well. I'm sure there are more examples but i don't remember them.
Jimin was 17 when BTS debuted, not 15, but it doesn't make it any less creepy tbh.

My mind went to this-the little shorts and school boy sailor outfits all while doing a couple of "sexy" dance moves:

arguably some of the schoolboy concepts can kinda be considered shota

Hmmm, I can see, since that can fit into most people personal kink.

It really was kinda amusing that when IU-gate blow up, regardless if the dragging was deserved or not, people where suddenly screaming "lolita concept! everywhere!", like some type of sudden awaking, like hello - if you try hard enough almost half of idol, and not only idol's, cute concepts smell not right etc.

I mean very rarely do boys get dragged for anything they do when it comes to marketing for a particular group of women so I dunno why netizens are suddenly surprised by this standard. When Shinee debuted and Taemin was like 14 and they were all singing about romancing older women no one got upset about it. Jimin was a fresh 17 or 18 showing off his abs to the world while everyone was swooning over Jeonkook being sooooo cute. I saw plenty of international fans rock counters that counted down to Taemin being of age, and counters that counted down to kookie being of legal age.

I'm upset at the concepts on both ends, but IU got dragged the hardest for being unapologetic about how people took the depiction of her "art" more than just that she had a lolita concept. Even WITHOUT that drama though, her lolita concept would have gotten dragged because

1. She's a woman, and women are always dragged worse
2. She already had multiple scandals that crushed her halo as Korea's sweetheart.

edit: Also why is this even a thing? Smeared lipstick is so damn ugly.

I thing I have to give her respect for is that she doesn't really give a shit what others think and keeps doing her work and still being successful at it.

Smear lipstick is suppose to be cool and sexy, but it comes off like a drunken sorority girl during st.patricks day. Tbh.

I've already kinda stated my piece, and like it's good that she doesn't give a shit or whatever but her unapologetic attitude to doing something so suspect is bothersome to me. I think because she's typically on the side of getting shitted on for no reason now people are more inclined to side with her. I don't think anyone else could have gotten away so clean in that scandal.

Yeah for sure it's awful but I don't like lipstick period and part of it is that I just imagine this happening.

The public's reaction to IU's scandal was...~weird. It was so obvious how they were more concerned about giving a bad image to her than to make judgements than can end up being of any value. And when someone tried to start a debate on the matter than in any way would put her in a good light, it meant it was a crazy stan blinded by love and the conversation was shut down. Well, this behaviour is not something exclusive of her scandal but it's usually less obvious because there is a lot of other people on the side of the idol too being OTT to defend them, but this time it didn't look like there was so much of it (yes, I know there still was some).

I mean yeah there are double standards but men don't really do "shota" concepts. There might be some odd school boy styled outfits occasionally but that's about it.

I've seen more shota concepts in jpop and cpop, Kpop just markets underage boys like their adult ones.... Which is also another problem

From: [identity profile] imienazwisko.livejournal.com

a true shota concept are probably trf boys or some young johnny juniors (i thinking the golden age)
i have seen some idols, models and actors doing shota-like photoshoots but these were mild. i think the market for shota stuff is smaller? it's not so prominent and in-your-face.
personally i feel weirded out by all fans sexualizing young idols, regardless of their gender. i cringe at teens doing crotch grabs as much as at ass shots of 16 year old girls. jimin abs and krystal shirt lift are both ngl?
there's that japanese actor, masaki okada, who once on tv show asked a little girl if she wants to live with him... since then he's a poster boy for lolicon on 2chan.
park bo young keeps on talking about yeo jin goo (when he wasn't legal yet) and how much she wants to film a kiss scene with him and stuff like that, i always side-eyed that. i mean i get that she is a fan but still. i think she apologized in the end tho.

OMG tell me more about Okada Masaki. Why did he asked that question to the lil girl? :O

Park Boyoung as in the Park Boyoung who acted in The Werewold Boy and Oh My Ghostess? I never imagine she will give that comment. I thought her selling point is to speak less and appear only in high grade/level projects lol

Thanks for the links. Didnt know that Park Boyoung is that outspoken. I hope she will take roles for prime-time dramas soon.

I feel like the recent scrutiny of lolita/shota concepts is a bit too uncontrolled (e.g. smudged lipstick, high school uniforms), especially considering most of Kpop is geared towards a young, teen audience.

(I wish this conversation would blow up in Japan though. Jpop severely needs it.)

People were waiting to drag IU because of the Eunhyuk scandal and her recent dating announcement. I don't think the reception was standard, even in comparison to other women e.g Stellar. Stellar got some hate, but it was mostly people who felt bad about what their company was making them do that commented on it(Granted, Stellar is less well known).

Her artistic liberty (or claim to artistic liberty) in the production of her album last year also made it easier for netizens for attack her for being the mastermind of her 'lolita' concept (I did see some stuff from her early career that indicated that her company/whoever in charge did rely on that concept in order to market her to her Ahjussi fans. I wouldn't blame her for that though)

The main reason why this scandal blew up is zeze. I'm certain that any male celebrity who reinterpreted a little princess or the secret garden the way IU reinterpreted the zeze story would get a ton of shit for it. I know she has a right to her own artistic interpretations, but the lyrics creeped me out. It is the main reason why people became so wary/ eager to tie IU to lolita/shota imagery/concepts.

The conversation on double standards and gender discrimination is important, but IU's issue is a lot more complex than this post makes it out to be.

people never wanted to talk about the real isssue tho, that means reading the book, understand her lyrics, make up your own opinion and actually use your brain

bandwagon haters just wanted a reason to slut-shame her again .... which they did

posts and comments about iu were never that deep anyways (coming from non-fans at least)

It's from the 90s film Lolita. There's some scene of her putting on lipstick (which is the whole young girl trying to be mature/sexy thing) and later during a scene when she's kissed the lipstick gets smeared.

It's not directly related to the concept but the smeared lipstick gets connected to ~lost innocence or a young girl trying to put forth a more mature sexuality she can't embody yet and all that.
