AKMU Returning With New Album in April, Member Lee Chan Hyuk Enlisting in the Military After

Akdong Musician is finally coming back. Their last album release, with “Play,” was in April 2014.

Yang Hyun Suk, CEO of YG Entertainment, revealed today that the brother-sister duo will be releasing their new album early. The album, which will be Akdong Musician’s second album, is already fully recorded.

Along with the good news, come the b. Yang Hyuk Suk also revealed that Lee Chan Hyuk, the male half of Akdong Musician, will be enlisting to fulfill his compulsory military service after promotions for the new album are complete.

Lee Chan Hyuk had surprised Yang Hyun Suk with his decision, saying he wants to go and plans to apply to the airforce or the marines. He thinks that if he goes and is surrounded by a new environment, he will have inspiration for new lyrics.

Yang Hyuk Suk jokingly replied at that time that Lee Chan Hyuk is too short to qualify for those divisions, but “many months have passed, and his mind has not changed at all,” reveals the CEO.

Along with the announcement of his plans, Lee Chan Hyuk had also asked Yang Hyun Suk to support his sister’s solo album.

Spring is looking to be a busy season for YG Entertainment with Lee Hi‘s and Akdong Musician’s comeback.

Oh what, I mean I guess this is unexpected cause idols normally wait until the last minute to enlist, but i can see why he would get it over and done with so soon. i do hope they get a comeback before then.

First of all, let's appreciate the positive first: Yay for a new album!!!

Honestly, this is the smartest choice Chan-hyuk could make. YG let them wait for two years and you know he's gonna do at least the same until the third album, so might as well squeeze in the army service and have it over with. Love that he's supporting his sister, but I have no faith whatsoever in YG. Maybe they can change over to HIGHGRND after he comes back from the army, their music fits much better with that label anyways, I think.

But this enlistment? o_0 I'm used to waiting two years between albums with the Western pop acts I follow that write their own music, so I never hold my breath with AkMu, but this enlistment news came sorta out of the blue. I'm sure Soohyun will do fine during the break (she seems like she's one of YG's darlings... shiver) but man I hope they resign with some other label once Chanhyuk is done.

yeah, it seems pretty common for korean boys to do their military service as soon as possible. being an artist it's obviously not that easy because companies want to debut their artists as young as possible so they have enough time to establish a fanbase that will stick with them when they do leave for their mandatory service.

Smart choice tbh. Hypothetically, he could have enlisted in 2014 and returned just in time for this release. #WasteYG'sTime2k16-18, come back in time for the contract renewal and move to Mystic89, Antenna or Jellyfish where he can promote continuously without worrying about enlistment.

I think some of ya'll are forgetting that 18-19 aren't uncommon enlistment ages outside of the idol world.

Chanhyuk is smart. Once he gets out he'll be 22/23 and Suhyun will be 20. He wont have to worry about an impending enlistment or any 'when-will-they-go-to-the-army" comments like Big Bang. He's said before that he has tons of songs worked on so that's a lot to release during his service or for Suhyun to use as solo material.And once he coems out they can transition to a more adult sound if they wish.
I am a bit concerned about him wanting to go to the marines, jesus.

I'm excited and disappointed, and proud.
He probably just got fed up with YG's basement and the bias towards his sister. They'll probably leave YGE after he's done the army. Unless his sister hits it big while he's gone, but I don't see that happening.

I think it is a good idea. He will be making money even in the army, since he wrote 1890982 songs, and will be serving early, getting good media image etc :)

He do not have that short career's prospect when you have to do the most while still being young etc
Also his name/group name is already out there, no scandals, people like them and all, nice&clean enlistment done early only will do even more wonders to boy's image, Yoo Seungho effect etc.

I was thinking about how this would only help their image, too. Suhyun can do scattered solo activities (if yg has their head together) to keep the akmu name somewhere in the public consciousness, then their first comeback post-enlistment will be pretty looked forward to, i think.

we're so used with actor and idols delaying their enlistment because of their career that news like this one are always a surprise at the first moment (same happened with yoo seungho). but it must be pretty common among korean boys that just got 20 y/o? the marine part got me by surprise because he's just so tiny... lmao

I hope suhyun has a proper solo and not just featurings here and there (I love featuring, but she deserves to shine by herself too!)

I'm sure the "early" enlistment is his decision and I think it's smart, honestly. As people have said before, he's not an idol so he doesn't have to worry as much about a short shelf life and busting ass to build up a fanbase/career right after debut. It's better for him to get it over with now while he'd still be on hiatus anyway than have it hanging over his head for the next 10 years.

i wonder which role in all of this played yg. i can see it being chanhyuk's choice simply because he realized that akmu is in limbo and it's not like yg will promote them regulary so he can go off to army since it won't change anything. but i also remember how... let's say "strange" yg was about soohyun and that he wanted to sign only her and that makes me a bit uneasy.
but i'm happy that at least they will release something before that. can't wait for their new album!
