Yoo Ah-in ‘wants to work with female director’

Actor Yoo Ah-in’s remarks about female film directors while promoting his new movie "Like for Likes" has grabbed media attention.

During a press briefing Saturday, the top actor said, "I want to work with a female movie director."

"When people talk about female directors, they always put 'female' in front of director,” he added, “even though they don’t put 'male' for male directors."

"This can mean that women are special, but in reality women often lose out in society because of their gender. I want to lend weight to them and I am also curious about working with them," he said.

Asked about the most memorable episode while making the movie, he said, "It was a meeting with my ideal woman (actress) Lee Mi-yeon,” adding, “She is an ideally nice woman. I have liked her since before I was an actor."

Yoo’s new romantic comedy "Like for Likes," costarring Lee Mi-yeon, hit theaters on Feb. 17.

i like this guy, and i don't remember if it was during the same day, probably not, but he also talked about how he really liked the scene in this movie when he says something about why is it that when men push for what they want they're confident, but when a woman does it she's being bossy, something along that line. he thought it was feminist and said he told the director, "i like it" in english haha

He's playing a love interest against Lee Miyeon who is 15 years his senior. I wonder whether he is the one who keeps taking this kind of roles or it was his company who decide on them. But nevertheless, it was interesting.

Lee Miyeon truly doesnt look her age. She kinda looks the same as she did 15 years ago. I need to know how she did it lol.

it's so strange to me that anytime a male actor stars opposite an actress with a significant age increase above him, that it's got be a thing as if a good portion of actors don't have love interests young enough to be their daughters in films and it's not mentioned at all.

watched this in korea last week. the cast was stellar, the movie was .......... not. but there were still some great scenes. yoo ah in was fantastic, of course. and yeah, his character stood up for women (well, maybe just a woman, but) and i was cheering for that. seriously, he's so gorgeous *____* (a guy i went with disagreed fervently, and was genuinely confused/frustrated with my response - he was like daniel henney is good looking, this guy is not).

Nice! There was a little chart I saw about some of the top actors in Hollywood having never worked with a director who was also a woman. Like some of them had over 50 films, lol. Some of them probably have production companies and could actually just go out and look for/hire a woman as well but nah...

So it makes me happy he's said this because I feel like many actors don't even think about that. Let's get some more perspectives in the film industries! Anyway, Yoo Ah In remains cool. I have lots of admiration for him and even get a chuckle over his taste in performance arts. I'm so excited to binge on Six Flying Dragons.

I used to study at a filmschool and worked in movies for a while. But I quit seeing how toxic enviourment it is for women. I constantly heard I am not fit for this because I am a woman. I was told stories about how terrible women are at making movies. How single women are crazy and you have to book a pet hotel for the cats they brig along. How women shouldn't study directing cause they will probably get pregnant after graduating and don't get to work at all. I was seen as a object too... Being told to dress more girly to please everyone's eye even though the weather was shit and I prefered not to get sick and wear tracksuits like everyone else did. Few times I was scolded for not introducing myself properly to senior filmmakers but they looked at me with them sleazy eyes, making me not wating to tell my name or anything about me... Females in the film industry are a minority. Even the jobs they do, like make up or costumes, are paid differently than the ones males do. In the industry I worked at female make-up artists was paid for a day of work while lighiting guy was paid per hour spent wokring. So when we did a lot of overtime, like 5 hours, make up artist was paid the same amount as for the day we finished on time. But lighting guys had their hourly wage multiplied with each extra hour. They were happy with overtime since they earned more than usual for it but make up artists hated it as they worked for free basically?
Once I worked with a rather chaotic female director that pulled a lot of crazy shit, crew hated her but I felt like if she were a man, it would've been different? Cause I seen things and movies are male-dominated and many women go for that 'she's one of us, not like other women, others are weak' trope mentality I detest.

I quit movies because I felt I don't have enough drive and passion for the craft to go against all odds. Sorry for the essay :(

ummm @ppl saying he's great for this. i guess it really is that rare that male celebrities acknowledge sexism in even in the smallest way. i don't want to give him cookies, so yay, for being decent and doing the bare minimum i guess. i like him as an actor and he's cute but i'll praise him when he does something more substantive to help women in the film industry
