You’re first solo regular album will come out soon. I think you must feel a pressure since your first solo mini album received great reviews .
Releasing and promoting has become a good experience so I was able to appeal my opinions more this time. I do feel pressure but it’s not a pressure about doing better, it’s more of feeling a responsibility since I participated more in this album. I want to make a perfect album someday. I want to be perfect.
I heard you’re carrying on with your practice on song writing too. Will this album include a song composed by Taemin?
I am continuously making songs as a hobby. But it’s not up to a standard where I can sell it anywhere. For now, I listened to all the songs during the process of song selection to be able to find songs that fits within my direction. I also wrote lyrics.
Which song did you write lyrics to?
There is a song called "Soldier". The narrator is the ‘soldier’. I unraveled the story of a man in love by comparing him to a soldier. I was a soldier trying to protect you, but I couldn’t protect you in the end. It’s something like this. Haha. I also participated in writing the lyrics of the title song. I woke up and you weren’t next to me anymore. You left me. It’s a sad and typical…(laughs) story.
You received favorable reviews for your choreography, clothes and style that looked like homage to Michael Jackson during "Danger", is there any other figure projected in this album too?
To be honest, I didn’t start off as trying to do homage to Michael Jackson in the very beginning for "Danger". I was just growing my hair at the time and it was black and had been permed! My appearance had a similar feeling to Michael Jackson and because I like him a lot too. The real goal was to show off my colour as much as possible. I tried to be, "What if I tried to look extremely powerful and wear a suit?’. In this album, there will be a little more relaxed sides compared to "Danger"."
It must feel so different between having had the chance to release a solo album from not releasing one at all. How was it like to have worked as a solo musician?
I felt like I have achieved something. It was something that I dreamed of since I was a trainee. But there was a big difference between what I imagined a solo musician to be from the real experience as a solo musician that I had. When I went on stage with the 5 members of SHINee, members filled up my flaws but my flaws became exposed when I was a solo. I am still looking for ways to succeed on stage as a solo.
The Taemin who went on stage during "Danger" seemed like he found a slight of an answer.
I don’t know. Maybe there is no end to finding. The stage still seems so big to me. I think I need to work harder to become a musician who can release energy to fill such a big stage.
I think you seem to have a tendency to be a perfectionist.
No. I do have a side of steeling myself to an action but it has a limit. I am only persistent in the things I want to do. I started dancing and singing because I really like it and since I am still loving it I try to do these surely. But for other areas, I really don’t care. For example studying a foreign language… Haha.
It’s all or nothing then. I think you must be the type of person who can concentrate if you really like it.
Only to things I really like.
You seemed so immersed on stage during "Danger". It felt like you were playing a character called a "Mysterious Thief". (T/N: the Korean title of "Danger") perfectly.
Really. I try not to stare fixedly at the camera or try to look cool. I try to fully sink into the aura that the lyrics, atmosphere, and the music has. So your words is good news. As well as "Danger" and lyrics to songs of SHINee, they are usually very conceptual so it’s sometimes hard to fully concentrate on the lyrics alone. If that’s the case, I try to concentrate on the sounds that are melted into the songs.
You made a debut at 16 years old. You’re 24 now. You went out into the world when most people go through adolescence and wandering about their life. We are curious as we didn’t see Taemin’s wandering phase in our eyes. Did you ever have such time?
I don’t recall correctly. But after debut I always wanted to be better. Even though SHINee did well, I kept longing for it and trying to have more. Then I would be stressed or experience a slump. Perhaps times like that was a time of wandering around for me. I went to practice room whenever I felt like that. I needed a space of my own but members were with me even in dorm. Practicing alone in a practice room, I was able to get out of a slump.
You are a person who needs a time on their own
I definitely need it. I can feel that I am finally having a rest when I’m spending time alone. I also need a time to sit down absent-mindedly. Then many thoughts come after one another, and I keep thinking without stopping. To be honest, I’m not having a very difficult social life or in a situation where I’m always exposed to lots of people but I’m naturally a little introverted. So I feel tired when I lack time on my own.
Nevertheless, you’re the most ascetic character out of all SHINee members. Balance, self-control, Harmony. A youngest member who suits these kind of words. Is this kind of personality in your nature?
Well. It’s in my nature to not want to cause harm to others. So I try to be careful, but since I live a life as a celebrity there are times that I make a mistake unintentionally. I don’t know it at the time but after listening to from other people later on there are many times that I think to myself, did I really do that?
Do you tend to listen carefully to stories that others tell you?
If someone tells me a mistake that I did, I accept it first. Even in times when I don’t really know whether my actions were really a mistake.
I think that’s good. Not many people are like that.
They were never wrong when I look back to it later on. It becomes an opportunity to know about myself that I didn’t know about. Thanks to the person who told me, I am able to know it faster. Then I realize many things and grow.
For a boy who made a debut at 16, the entertainment industry must have seemed like the wild that’s fast-changing and a place that you need to grow quicker. So maybe you needed that kind of attitude in order to protect yourself. The process of cultivating oneself to have self-control, find balance and try to be in harmony with other people.
I think that’s right. I try to keep my mind in peace as possible. Trying to find the balance between this and that. Mediating appropriately between the time to work and the time to play, I quickly meet my friends when I’m feeling stressed.
What do you do in moments that you want to deviate?
I think the quickest and easiest way (to solve) is going out with my friends. Then I’m okay. If I have time, I travel abroad that’s close by. If the circumstances are not fit, then I go to places like Cheongpyeong. I swim in the summers and go skiing during the winters! It’s simple. Haha. Then I come back in the evening, eat meat and drink alcohol, then sleep!
Then what does Taemin need the most right now?
I want to go on a vacation to overseas!
Where do you want to go? Swiss?
Haha. That’s right. I talked a lot about Swiss and I really like it that much. During my last visit to Swiss, I stayed in Interlaken and the nearby areas. I went to hot springs and went skiing and skiing again. I enjoyed the incredible scenery too. There’s everything I like in Swiss. It’s a place to have a perfect healing time. Perhaps because I live in Seoul, I prefer somewhere that I can rest rather than a downtown area. I want to find places with fresh air.
Places with fresh air, you have a preference of a grandfather?
Haha. My bronchial tubes are a little sensitive so whenever I go to such places my condition feels much better. I still cannot forget the Mother Nature and the fresh air that I enjoyed in Swiss.
Since debut you’ve said ‘I want to become the best’ so many times. What does it mean to become the best to you?
I don’t think this job can distinguish from those who do better and those who don’t. I think becoming the best means when I can bring inspirations to many people through my music and stage? First of all, I don’t want to be seen as someone who became a celebrity just because his looks. The music that I’m doing aren’t music that can only be understood by people with sophisticated understanding in music. It’s all about feeling the sensibility that each music has and I want to be able to portray this in sincerity. I want to be able to deliver what’s real, not a falsehood. Recently I think this is the way to last long.
You’re wanting people who doesn’t know anything about music feel the sensibility that you’re trying to deliver through your music and stage?
Yes. Wouldn’t this be possible if the aspects of a performance like music, choreography, lights, costumes, etc. are expressed in perfect unity? I hope my music and stage can influence someone even if it’s just on something really small. It’s my dream as a musician.
What would be Taemin’s top ability that could be useful to achieve that dream?
Oh, well. It sounds awkward to say it myself…. Hm. I think I can dance, sing… I think I can do all that.
Ah, that’s right. You’re right. Taemin can do everything.
I’m joking. Hahaha. I think my strongest point is the great level of concentration on stage. And also recently, I think a lot about wanting people to listen to the music that I’m trying to deliver rather than trying to look at me just because I’m pretty looking. In order for that to happen, I must try harder. I hope people can see the sensibility in the music that I’m trying to deliver. I’ve set that as a goal.
I think you’re doing great. You stepped off on the right foot.
No. I’m not good enough yet. Really. There are so many excellent musicians out there in the world. I always think I need to keep learning.
