Lovelyz

Girl group Lovelyz revealed a time that they were punished by their manager for secretly eating food.

On February 16, the first episode of the new SBS MTV variety show “Lovelyz in Wonderland” premiered.

On this first broadcast, it showed the Lovelyz members secretly hiding from their manager as they ate snacks, which are prohibited as a part of their diet. They took out snacks that they had hidden in their dorm and were happily eating it. However, as soon as their manager entered, their facial expressions quickly changed, and the atmosphere instantly became different.

During an interview with the producers of the show, member Kei said, “One time, we secretly ate toast in our dorm. But our manager caught us and plates were thrown.”

1. [+518, -11] How could you throw food?

2. [+435, -8] They're so stick skinny though

3. [+393, -13] So sad to see them scared to eat in front of the managers ㅠㅠ

4. [+35, -3] Even if it comes with the job, it's always sad to hear someone talk about how they're not allowed to eat..

5. [+33, -4] Funny because the manager himself is fat

6. [+31, -3] Their manager is standing there like some thug...

7. [+29, -5] Goosebumps... I feel bad for them

8. [+28, -1] I understand their image is integral to their success but they're not animals... basic human rights should be respected, no? I heard that a lot of girl groups suffer from a lack of bone density ㅡㅡ;; they need to be eating healthier

9. [+27, -1] They're the skinniest group out of all the rookies... I see why ㅠ

10. [+20, -1] Well you don't want to end up like miss A's Min...

11. [+19, -1] This is actually a really severe issue, not something for them to be sharing like it's some joke...

12. [+18, -2] Look at how big their manager is... he should be the one dieting, not the kids

1. [+4,876, -117] ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Wow, how could you still break the dish... so mean ㅠㅠ

2. [+4,729, -151] Isn't throwing a plate still considered abuse?

3. [+3,872, -141] Only in Korea and Japan would idols have such a lack of privacy

4. [+513, -7] I understand that dieting is necessary for their jobs but aren't idols super active? They practice for 15 hours a day, how exactly are they supposed to handle that without food for fuel?

5. [+402, -8] So many managers are trashy people in the industry...

6. [+382, -16] BTS and Lovelyz's managers are so scary

7. [+323, -7] I'd be so upset if I found out that my daughter was almost hit by a plate just because she wanted a late night snack..

yikes. all of them are so thin already. they look so thin on tv and in photos, i can't begin to imagine how they'd look in the flesh. hope their current and future health is not too negatively impacted by this...

They are so thin already, with a really active schedule/apparently another comeback already planned soon... how long before one of them faints??? Idols NEED to eat to be able to do their job.
I'm pissed off.
This makes me side-eye even more when the manager made Jisoo, Kei and Sujong leave for a small time on Weekly Idol. Right when they could have eaten pizza.
But it's been a discussion for a while, I remember some pann(?) article about how they're scary-thin before Lovelyz8
I HATE talking about somebody's weight because it's none of my business but when there's such an unhealthy diet going on for AGES and even parents sending them watermelons to make them follow the diet like one (Jin?) said during a Lovelyz Diary episode... I can't help being worried for the girls and really angry at their management.

Ugh that Lovelyz diary episode =( I think Sujeong (not too sure, can't remember too well) was the only girl who didn't mention wanting to lose more weight in her letter, everyone else made that one of their goals. So upsetting.

From: [identity profile] gathyou.livejournal.com
But in a variety show with Red Velvet, Sujeong took the time to explain that despite her round cheeks and what everyone thinks about her, she was the lightest (I can't remember the righr word ><) of the group.
It broke my heart a little because in another variety she was half joking half complaining about her cheeks and other members rushed in to say it was cute and pretty... and what seemed like a joke then keeps adding into something sad - I really can't imagine how much pressure this group could be dealing with right now

Maybe it wasn't her then. I hate all this so much. Sujeong is truly one of the cutest girls ever.

It could still be her, she seemed sad to be assumed something based on her cheeks?
All of them are cute and pretty, why would they encourage them to starve instead of, idk, shielding them from bad comments. Like Twice said their diet was lifted while promoting because their schedule needed energy. No doubt they would still have some control over their meals, but that was refreshing to hear. I wish more management would do that...

I think that netizen meant Minzy's fluctuating weight. There was an article about her and some model name Stephanie (I think) hanging out for a show and they focused on her weight gain since she looked fairly chubby.

Sadly, nothing new. Image is very important for anyone who is in the entertainment industry, this happens not only in Korea but all over the world.

Even if you are not in the ent industry, your appearance, often dictates what jobs you can get, how you will be treated and perceived by others, all that before you can even open your mouth, show your resume, etc.

I was watching the first ep of their show unsubbed and I saw their manager took their Ramen away from their luggage and got upset. Not surprised one bit though. I know boygroups go through this too, but I feel like after they reach a certain point they get more liberties with their diets yet I don't think that will ever happen with girls. If anything the more successful they get, the stricter they'll probably be with them.

Ugh netizen 10 ¬_¬ Yeah, she is not as skinny as other idols, and you know what? that's perfectly fine. I'm sure the girl has a more healthiest lifestyle than the majority of people that comment about her weight all the time.

I feel so powerless when I see these kind of things U_U
That manager looks scary. I wish girl groups had more women as managers. I'm sure they would be more comfortable. I'm not talking about the diets, because that would keep happening, but in general.

That Min comment is awful as it is, but also shows so much stupidity:either you're starving like Lovelyz or are you "pig" like Min, like there can't be any situations inbetween? The commenter seems to be that kind of person who thinks that you're dead&gone/everything's lost bc you ate one cookie or something...

Nothing coul make netizens happy anyway; idols might as well follow a healthy and nutricious diet specified tobtheir career needs.

why would people throw food away... don't waste food or you'll end up like that girl from that hans christian andersen story who stepped on bread

i feel bad for the girls, i wonder if they eat enough calories for their age and get enough nutrients

I think JYPE has female managers, but they like to rotate their managers among different groups. Got7 has traveled with manager noona before. Miss A and Twice also talked about manager unnies. JYPE does have more male than female managers, so they need to fix that.

oh that's good. i think the industry in general needs a lot more female handlers for gg. it makes me uneasy seeing all these grown ass men handling underage girls and controlling their lifestyles/diet.

From: [identity profile] 921227.livejournal.com
Managers in general are mostly male, but it seems odd that more female groups don't have at least one female manager like, the whole idea of a unknown grown man being these girls' main adult contact in every sense is uncomfortable and awkward.

that was harsh of him to throw the food like that :/
if someone did that to me i would be in tears and traumatized, prob would never touch food again.....
i feel bad for the girls :( like i can understand as idols they need to manage their bodies/figure but he could have simply told her to stop eating..

it disgusts me that these men and women are being paid to watch them closely and to make sure that they don't eat a calorie over what's permitted. I hope they at least have nutritionists within the company

i have a deja vu, like i read a different translation of the same article somewhere before.

it still sucks for various reasons, some of them the sort of control the managers have, the wasted resources of our lovely planet. and a lot of other things in between... not cool.

i'm so tired of everything about this. i'm tired of the fact that girl groups go through this, tired of the articles that come out about it, tired of the media play that makes more money for these evil companies by garnering sympathy for the girls
tired of knowing how many EDs are going to be triggered both for the idols and for the people reading about these extreme diets
and tired of seeing every single other girl group go through this, even if they play it for laughs like "haha my manager's gonna be mad that i ate this lol!" it's still going on behind the scenes

it's so sad like whenever i see an idol who has a little more meat on her bones i pay extra attention because i think they look so much cuter and healthier, but i know inevitably that means behind the scenes they're gonna be abused into losing the weight

This is one of the reasons I can't stan girl groups. This is so horribly triggering for anyone with a history of ED or a body image issue. But I think even the boy bands are probably on restrictive forced diets too?

It's so disturbing, how little choice or agency anyone in kpop has. They don't even get to eat a snack.

Date: 2016-02-18 02:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mycorrhizoid.livejournal.com
Boy bands do diet, mostly for a comeback/concert/photoshoot, but they're not micromanaged to the same degree and they're not expected to be x weight, just look good (e.g. having abs, muscular biceps etc). You rarely hear of them talking numbers or being measured/weighed on shows. (Certain actors are an exception to this.)

As far as I can tell, no girl group member is ever supposed to be over 50 kg (110 lbs) no matter how good she looks or how tall she is. And the companies often write the girls' weights (hopefully exaggerated to meet that arbitrary standard) on their profiles, which isn't typical for boys.

Woollim is so stupid when it come to Lovelyz PR, why they do stories like that, what's the purpose beside make feel bad about them, this, the ban on phones until first win, and that awfully silly passport story just show how inept they are in creating image for their artists.

Ugh, "diets" in the idol world are horrible
You would think with fit idols like Soyu becoming popular for their healthy figures it would drive companies in a direction other than just restrict calories.

From: [identity profile] moronicus-kyla.livejournal.com
The way Woollim has been treating them is gross af. They were never as controlling with Infinite (or at least they had the PR sense to keep that under the wraps, not that it's any better). People like to defend this blatant sexism by saying that Infinite didn't get a new house until their first win but Lovelyz don't even get to use their phones.

Date: 2016-02-18 10:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olivier-dathos.livejournal.com
I was just thinking of Infinite because I only watched Infinite Showtime ep 10 yesterday and they spent basically the whole show eating. I was thinking then how great it was that even if it was just a show, they ate without hesitation, etc.

Date: 2016-02-18 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ultimaaa.livejournal.com
They were though? I don't know why people act like Infinite had it any better during their first year. Hell, some of the members STILL have major issues surrounding food and body image (hi Woohyun, hi Sungyeol) because of how strict and controlling Woollim was towards them. I swear to god some people have some selective memories because Infinite have mentioned multiple times how they weren't allowed to eat, had phones taken away, etc etc. Woollim is just a bad company, period.

These kpop group eating and dieting habits sound like America's Enterainment Industry prior to the late 80's. No at people were allowed in our industry either but things changed because of so many illness, deaths and eating disorders. I have personally watched someone destory their body because of a eating disorder and she has had it so long that she is now starting to show mental issues as a side effect. That is not good. Making young women suffer for images sake is dangerous and can bare future generation to have lower birth rates. Isn't Korea already suffering from that in the first places? So issues are being caused by starvation and when the time comes and these girls get older and married they are going to get more blame from their families for not being healthy enough for this and that. It won't even be their fault but the people who forced them will never get any blame or be accounted for their destructive actions until the women in the korean entertainment industry band together and take action as a whole. That means younger and older women.
