Yoo Ah in 11 540x305

On the Channel A show “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” restaurant owner and openly gay TV personality Hong Suk Chun spoke out about rumors of actor Yoo Ah In being gay.

It’s a rumor familiar in the industry – that Yoo Ah In is gay. The rumors first started when Yoo Ah In was spotted at a popular gay bar and a picture of him there started circulating online. Even the actor himself knows of these gay rumors and has said before that the rumors are untrue and that the story has been twisted. He is reported to have said, “But that one photo has become like some kind of evidence that I am.”

Regarding this rumor, Hong Suk Chun said, “If that is the logic, then every male and female celebrity that has been to a gay bar should be gay,” emphasizing the fallacy of that kind of reasoning.

Actor Gong Hyung Jin pointed out that if it was true that Yoo Ah In was gay, the actor himself would have admitted, considering his personality.

i dont think anyone should care if he's gay or not, it's not anyone's business honestly

Basically.

OP, sorry for going kind of OT but I wanted to talk about the annoying thing they do in Hello Counselor everytime there is a concern that has something to do or could be related to their sexual orientation. They make the question about "what they like" in fron of everyone on TV... what they expect? If they're gay basically they're telling them to lie or to come out of the closet in fron of all Korea.
I try to think what I would do in their place and I would probably end up just doing an uncomfortable silence, I cannot lie to save my life.

But I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised about how they managed the last concern on the episode with Yezi. I think it was the kid the one who brought it up and not them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i59SyuPUm-A

Hello Counselor is so messy, and people have criticized a lot of episodes like that are like,
you bring in the concerned family member, have him/her talk about the "odd" and "worrisome" behaviors the person's exhibiting (ex guy liking dolls and cooking) that just happen to break the social norms, then the person comes out and clarifies s/he's not gay/lesbian, and then it's all oh yay! we were so worried and on.
it's so damn homophobic and lumping it along with some of the genuine problems that really should have a legit counselor involved is just so annoying.

I totally understand what you say and I'm kind of glad to know the show gets that kind of critics.
I used to watch HC because I enjoyed watching a korean show that wasn't about idols and it gave you a more real approach to the regular citizen. I'm not talking about the concerns in itself because those are exaggeration and not the norm, but more for the interactions between the families/friends. But with time I got really tired of how they didn't gave much importance at real problems and even dismiss it but then make a mountain of silly things like the ones you said in your comment, and I stopped watching it. The Yezi one was the exception and just for her lol

Dodging the bullet is what I do because the time I "come out" to a friend she though I was joking. I'm going to be 27 and I'm still not that sure about my sexuality but I guess bisexual would be the most appropiate. And I must be very lucky because like I said in my original comment I can't lie but people has always made the right questions so that I don't have to "come out" to them without having to lie. They would always ask me if I'm a lesbian and I just say "no" or if I like guys and I would say "yes" and instead of keep asking they made their own conclusions.
And my friends and my mother have been making those questions since I was really young, including the friend that a lot of years later didn't believe me, the irony. Until this day I'm not sure what made so many people around me think I was a lesbian when I never show interest for no one at all... but I do have it, I'm just "apathetic" and very private about relationships.

First off, I don't really care.
Second, I live in a place where being gay is completely normal, and as such quite different from eg. South Korea.

Yoo Ah In first came off as totally gay to me, but then again Gong Hyung Jin said, he would be the first to announce he's gay. So I now guess he's straight.

i wish there were more openly gay celebs, both in Korea and elsewhere, but it's not the responsibility of any one individual to come out or stay closeted.
until LGBT people are more accepted, we're never going to know, anyway. there are dozens of celebs who we'll probably never find out are gay.

It's so sad that people still have to "defend" themselves against LGBT rumors as if we were in the 50s. If he's really gay he should be allowed to be open about his sexuality and not defend his heterosexuality as if being gay was a crime.

+1000 people behave as if being gay was a horrendous crime, or something to hide, or whatever, but never a totally normal thing...

Also, your comment kinda reminded me of Johnny Galecki "I've never really addressed those rumors because I always figured, why defend yourself against something that's not offensive?"

Ikr, that's why I liked Im Siwan's answer on radio star when they brought up how his related search word was gay and he just said that he'd seen it and didn't see a need to address it, it was only when they pressed and asked if he had ever been approached by someone who thought he was gay (I think they were trying to say if he had ever been hit on but went so around it) that he said no...like it's such a non-issue what anyone's sexuality is

This situation especially irks me because Yoo Ah In wasn't even there? Like it's a bunch of people talking about his sexuality...why?

lmao @ that actor saying Yoo Ah In would have announced it to the world if he was bc it's his personality, yes bc it's that simple rme. Hong Suk Chun's reply was good, didn't comment on someone else's sexuality, only pointed out how flimsy the argument based on that single picture is, bless

i'm more surprised that rumor even exists when i always thought yoo ah in was pretty aggresively heterosexual what with him not being shy abt his conquests and y'know that (scandalous) reality show in which it was /heavily/ hinted that he did stuff with his assistant in vegas
or am i remembering that wrong?

yoo ah in launch my life (from 2011 i think)
it's been a while since i watched it and idk if there are still subbed vids out but i remember them giving him an assistant (actually some rich heiress??) he hated and taking her everywhere to work with him? the show was "scandalous" bc yai didn't even once mince his words and there are some fights with said assistant/ him badmouthing sponsors/ telling the pds to fuck off etc
at one point yai and the assistant get drunk in vegas and suddenly love each other???
the show was honestly a mess so i might actually be misremembering stuff

I don't mind speculation about a person's sexuality, but not at the expense of someone's reputation which might be the case here. While I don't particularly have a liking towards Hong Suk Chun, I'm glad that he at least stood up for Yoo Ah In. I personally think that the man is gay, but he says he's not and that should be it; and honestly, being part of an industry/culture that is still highly intolerant, ignorant and prejudiced against homosexuality, who can blame him or any other celebrity for hiding it? If he is indeed hiding it.

It's sad to know that being called gay is still deemed as such an insult -not only in Korea- that people who are not even close to him (i.e., his fans) want to sue people on his behalf for it. That's the most ridiculous part.

yoo ah in always had this rumor but it got aggravated again couple months ago, when his acceptance speech was rather... emotionally charged and a lot of gays on twitter were going on and on about how gay it was, and how they just know, and how every little gesture he made was so flamboyant.
and then it blew up into a fight between people who thought it was rude to claim someone's gay just based on their behavior, especially if the said person already denied it blah blah blah, and people who were accusing the other side of being homophobic, because why do you think calling someone gay is an insult yada yada yada
idk, i agree that it definitely shouldn't be an insult to say someone might be gay and i get the whole "assuming straight till proven otherwise" is also ridiculous but yoo ah in has already talked about how he was stressed out about the rumors, and when these people are not just saying yoo ah in might be gay but laughing about it, calling his speech a "thinly veiled coming out"... it was a big mess.
quite frankly i feel like yai won't give a damn anymore at this point.

Is YAI bothered about the rumor? I read somewhere he wanted to do a homosexual role/bromance movie if he could, he also loved to win that award with JSK.. I don't think he cares?

I also think it is so weird how gay rumors starts when said actor does a homosexual role in a movie.

I heard Jo In Sung, Kim Nam Gil have gay rumors as well, because they acted too well in their homosexual roles ( what ????)

I find it impossible to read anything about Hong Suk Chun without imagining what it must be like to be practically the only openly gay major TV personality in your whole damn country. Like, that is just insane.

YAI always seemed like an (adorably attractive) dudebro/fuckboi-hipster imo, and I thought gay bars was were k-celebs go to hang when they don't want to be "seen"

either way: idc.

From my experience, gay bars are simply more fun than "straight" ones, the ambiance is just different.

Idk if it's the same in Korea, but saying he is gay because he was spotted at a gay bar is the same as saying a gay person is straight because they go to a "regular" bar.

These people are really wasting their time - a lot of people go to gay bars and are completely straight, because they like the vibe, music, drinks, or people better. Also, speculating on someone's sexuality is gross and needs to be shut down.
