A. Ahyoo. It’s not. Well. Being busy can’t be helped, working at two things at the same time. But I’ve already adapted. If anything, now I start feeling empty when there’s time to rest. But even then, always in an enjoyable way. (laughs)
Q. You seem to immerse deeply in that way. Just for Unforgettable, with your tanned face you became the perfect village boy. And when you’re back in Seoul, you’re an idol across Asia. You change like your flipping a switch.
A. It wasn’t hard at all. It was okay because EXO’s activities have been constant and become familiar. If I just go on stage, everything follows.
Q. The truth is, your agency had no intent to get you into acting. We heard that because of this, you never properly learned to act. But quite by chance you were the first from EXO to go into it.
A. Honestly I didn’t think about going into acting either, let alone first, but the chance suddenly appeared. One day, the scenario for Cart came to me. So I went “wow!” and went with it.
Q. You started acting by chance but your ability is near undisputed. Did you foresee this kind of response?
A. It felt really good, although when I watch myself act I always feel regret and something lacking. Other people looking kindly on it surprised me and helped me be more confident. I’m honestly not someone who enjoys being praised. Doesn’t getting pulled into it feel too good? Hahaha…
Q. Have you really never received acting lessons?
A. Yes. Not even once…
Q. Although you haven’t appeared in many projects yet, many of your roles seem to have mostly been gloomy. But then you transformed into a bright village boy for Unforgettable.
A. Gloomy or bright, I’m just having a lot of fun acting (laughs). I have that side and this side. It’s not fitting with and preferring one, but finding both are interesting.
Q. How was filming for Unforgettable? We heard it was far away in the countryside.
A. While we were filming, it was hot and there was a lot of hard work. It was really fun when we weren’t filming. We [the actors] were all peers so we all played together (laughs). We played all across Goheung, doing everything we could. We played billiards and went all the way up to Sucheon to watch a movie. When we went to Deukryangdo island, we went fishing and swimming in the ocean. Just like the kids in Unforgettable. To be honest, the other actors are friends younger than me, but they’re much more mature than you might imagine. Maybe because they started on their careers early, but it was easy to talk with them, and because of that we spent time like real friends.
Q. It must have felt different from EXO activities.
A. Different is different. Because I was spending time with different people who weren’t the EXO members I was always with. It was a new fun.
Q. This movie is your first opportunity to act in a lead role and with a dialect.
A. I was born in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul. I really wonder what the people who actually use Jeollanam-do’s dialect will think as they watch this movie. There’s anticipation, and there’s fear. For now, my curiosity is large. Rather than properly learning the dialect, I practiced as I listened to it, and the other actors and I didn’t use Seoul speak at all as we went down to Goheung. Even now, it slips out naturally when I talk, haha. When I meet with the other actors from Unforgettable, we still talk in the dialect. Seoul speak feels awkward.
Q. The dialect is a first and so is the melo genre.
A. It made me flutter. Really. A pure love at seventeen that I can’t feel again except through film. It was nice. And when will I ever get to film a melo with Kim Sohyun again? (laughs)
Q. How were you at seventeen years old? Your first love then?
A. I was just a quiet and immature student. My first love was in the last year of high school. If you could call it love, then that was the time. Filming brought back a lot of emotions.
Q. Did you choose Unforgettable to be your first lead role by your own volition? There was coverage from reporters about the site once in the midst of filming and you were just a village boy, not EXO’s D.O. It was a surprise to see how much more dark your face was (laughs). Honestly, [if you wanted] you could have taken a much cooler role instead.
A. Nope. I don’t like cool things [in particular] (laughs). When I received the scenario, I read it from beginning to end without pause. Reading it made me want to try a character like Beomsil at least once. And the pictures of us on set were real so I liked them more. Haha. If you’re there, you tan. To be honest, I tried a tanning bed before the movie started filming because I was on the pale side. But you will never achieve the color of children living in a Jeollanam-do island village through one. I did worry over that, but two days there and it happened naturally. While we were filming, there was a time where I didn’t see the EXO members for two weeks. Kai was the darkest member, but I’d become a lot darker than him. I thought, “wow, I really tanned that much.”
Q. Aren’t you afraid in the meanwhile? Because of your exceedingly boyish appearance.
A. I don’t worry. The projects are always fun in themselves (laughs). How the audience views me is of course important, but I’m more concerned with if I’m happy with myself. If I’m having fun, filming is fun, and if I enjoy filming, then I feel that the audience will be able to tell too.
Q. What do you want to try as an actor? What genres do you like?
A. What I want to try the most is noir. The character would be a side I haven’t been able to show yet. Or in a project like The Chaser or I Saw the Devil. I really like the heartless ones, haha.
Q. I’ve gone to EXO’s concerts many times, and every time felt the impact of EXO’s superstardom. You’re a main vocal for EXO, and also it’s most active actor. Is your main goal to have both those rabbits in hand?
A. Right. It’ll be hard, but I want to give the best of my capabilities. I don’t know if I can catch both of them. I still have a long way to go. Far for EXO too. We’ll have to show even more new sides of ourselves.
Q. What will the year 2016 be for you, the year of your first lead role?
A. Would it be a more meaningful year as EXO, and as Do Kyungsoo? I think it will be a year that leaves a mark on my life.
