Special Panel Predicts Which Idols Will Rise to the Top in 2016

A special panel of “judges” has recently revealed their personal predictions for the 2016 idol music scene.

On December 6, MBC Music’s “End-of-Year Special Part 2” examined various idol groups’ fortunes for the new year. The panel consisted of a reporter, a producer, a lyricist, and the two MCs.

Reporter Lee Hye Rin chose SEVENTEEN. “If they get a good opportunity, I think they will do well,” she said. Comedienne Kim Shin Young added, “Their teamwork is good. Instead of worrying about age, they get along like friends and respect each other’s opinions.”




Producer Kim Do Hoon chose MAMAMOO, the group he produces himself. “Personally, I feel the pressure from TWICE and GFRIEND,” he shared.



Lyricist Hwang Sung Jin picked a different girl group, Woollim Entertainment’s Lovelyz. “They work hard and their songs are good,” he said.



Kim Shin Young had high praise for Starship Entertainment’s hip-hop rookie group MONSTA X. “They’re SEVENTEEN’s rivals,” she said. “It’s a competition to see who will be the next BLOCK B. There’s a member named Jooheon whose energy is crazy. It’s similar to MAMAMOO’s Hwasa. He looks a little like a bad boy but he has a soft heart. His style feels like indie hip-hop.”

Meanwhile, Kim Sung Joo chose veteran group B.A.P, citing their newly active promotions after a long hiatus.

I'm not objective so TWICE! Girls are already killing it in the first week of the year.
I like more Lovelyz, Laboum and Oh My Girl than GFriend, but I think is GF who is going to do the best.
I feel like Mamamoo has a different public to the rest of new girl groups, so they would do really well but in a "different way".
Not going to comment about boy groups because I lack knowledge about it.

i'm not a bap fan but that they're in that list with groups years their juniors is kind of sad i feel like every year someone says "this will be baps year" and then it just... doesn't happen

n was on this episode and he chose seventeen as the rookies who caught his eye "[Seventeen] has a lot of members but every one of them is charismatic and their performances are fun. They have the vigor of a rookie group. I think they make use of their passion and show it off very well. They're really cool."

i'm bummed oh my girl wasn't mentioned but aside from people being impressed with closer they haven't really done much to suggest they're on the rise, maybe this year wm will focus on promoting them more

I get the feeling that Mamamoo is being pushed to break out of their niche and be more accessible. In their interviews that's what they're always hinting at. Slicker euphoric hooks and maybe utilize Moonbyul's rapping to do something edgy.

twice is already everywhere so for sure they're going to be unstoppable.

praying mamamoo takes it to another level. put out a really catchy electronic track somewhat similar to f(x)'s vibe.

I think that TWICE and GFriends are the girlgroup rookies that have the highest probabilities of rising in 2016 if their companies play their cards well. I love MAMAMOO, and they're my favorite girlband right now, but I feel like their style is a bit different from those girlgroups that manage to be the most populars, so I'm not sure if they'll get the level of popularity of a main stream group (I don't know how to express it).

As for boygroups, I think that GOT7 and BTS have a good chances to keep rising this year as long as their companies make the right decisions (I think GOT7 has that IT thing to be variety kings if they are given the right opportunities). As for rookies, my bets are on Seventeen, Monstar X and Ikon, but I'm not totally sure, I'm just guessing based on the year end awards and news that are posted here. Seventeen has manage to get my attention with their music and live stages, which is pretty difficult since I tend to ignore most of the new groups (girl and boys), so I'm betting for them on this (I still don't pay them that much attention, but still lol).

Mamamoo has the 3rd best selling single by a girl group this year only after Sistar and AOA though, so I can see them pulling a Sistar and becoming digital monsters even if they don't have a bigger, more invested fandom like the girl groups with a fresh/youthful style usually have and even so, I think they're already gathering a solid fanbase.

I agree with basically everything, especially Gfriend, Twice and Seventeen because they've already shown a lot of potential not even a year into their debuts.
Idk about BAP and Monsta X though. BAP's last release has done awful in charts and it seems they've lost plenty of their fans during their hiatus and Monsta X have barely made any splash, not even fandom-wise so...
lol @ BAP being called a "veteran" group tho. They're not even 4 years old. I thought you were considered a veteran when you hit the 5-6 y/o mark.
I personally think BTS will rise even more since their fandom keeps growing and the public seems to have started to notice them a bit, and maybe Fiestar since they're getting lots of articles recently.

Twice is gonna be unstoppable for sure.
Ikon will also make an impact on 2016 if they release music this year and continue to place Hanbin in variety shows because he's a natural.
SVT... its all up to Pledis really. I'm told they have a tendency of begining to ruin things around a group's 3rd comeback so idk. As long as the company leaves the group's music up to Woozi and the performance up to Hoshi, and interferes as little as possible, they should be ok though.

For the second half of the episode, they talked about leaders of groups who will do well and the ones mentioned were aoa, vixx, ikon, bts, gfriend and i don't know who else i missed, but they had someone who did face reading.

Vixx Leo was mentioned by the songwriter that he would love to have appear on Masked Singer

Mamamoo's producer also mentioned Vixx N because he say him as a radio DJ and was very impressed.

The facereader/fortune teller said hanbin will do well because he has a face that a ceo will really like or be drawn to? lol im not so sure but he did mention YG. lol

And that jimin should focus on group activities instead of solo activities this year

Also kim shin young said that she had rookies as permanent guests on her radio show and she was really happy to see both groups do well. The minute she say aoa promote their first sexy song i think, she knew they would do well. And the first time she saw N, she told him he would go daebak as well. So seeing both groups do well makes her very happy.
