IU has been casted as the female lead of Moon Lovers, a remake of the popular Chinese drama Bu Bu Jing Xin, also known as Scarlet Heart, or Startling with Each Step.

SBS has announced that SBS and the production company are currently negotiating to air the drama in September. The drama will start its shooting in January.

At the moment Kang Ha Neul, Hong Jong Hyun, Baekhyun, Nam Joo Hyuk, Kim Sung Gyun, and Ji Soo have confirmed their casting. Lee Jun Ki has been offered the role of male main lead.

welp it's the combination of shitty writer + sbs with a terrible track record when it comes to sageuks + a string of pretty boys + idol actress who will have to be super super good at acting and whom I'm not sure is capable of.
and here i was hoping that they don't end up finding anybody for the female lead so the drama never happens.

IU's kinda bad. She slurs her words. If she could fix that then she'd be a decent actress.

Dang. I laughed when I read this. If only BBJX was not a sad drama...I would enjoy a time traveling romance if it was light like Splash Splash Love. But also the casting kind of throws me off too? Like idols/model-turned actors are not really ideal for an angsty/sad drama. The casting would make sense if it was something light with lots of fluff.

If MBC was heading the remake, I would be a little more confident that this drama is not going to tank.

I don't think the female lead has to be good at acting though. Not like Liu Shi Shi is that great of an actress, though I do like her.

I was thinking of female leads. If the male lead was a little younger, I'd say Park Eun Bin. If a little older, maybe Lee Young Ah. I came up with so many possibilities because I don't like the casting as it is now.

Ah, I see what you're saying. It's gonna be hard to judge IU's acting because she has not been in a historical drama, and there are some people that just aren't fit for that.

iirc, from the original drama the heroine is a time traveller from modern times so they probably won't need the sageuk speech for her/there's an in-universe explanation if it's faulty.

But I legit have no idea why this is even being made.

so now it's official (?)
i've been reading rumors since .....

idk for me iu actress is always on the same note, cindy role was an improvement but not a really big one

lol omg what a mess. at least 3 wooden actors in that cast already. iu was good in producers but i don't think she has the capacity like liu shi shi did.

they should shelf it and wait for better prospects. it isn't like they didn't mess up the other chinese/tw remakes.

When I started reading and HJH, then NJH... Literal wood festive lol
Haneul boy run please, run away!
Is SM still pissed on Baekhyun bc Oreogate, I can't imagine why would they put him on this mine as a debut project. From prospect of co-starring in movie with Yeo Jin-Goo (that won't happen in the end) to this...

Njh being everywhere is baffling ....he's so bad at acting.. lol maybe sm thinks his bad acting (Idk how baekhyun is) won't be as noticeable with this cast.

If IU won't pull Hyeri-level of plot twist she's the first to be shit talk about, then Baekhyun and at the end model-turned-actors ofc (HJH served some tragic mess in a short drama along Kara's Seungyeon once, guess who got the shit mainly...)

IU already did just that with Producers and imo pulled a performance far more challenging and layered than Hyeri's, but now with the fresh wave of hate idk if she'll be acknowledged even if she pulls an Oscar-worthy performance.

Hjh is really bad lol. He was an awkward host as well... iu did well with producers but at this point it doesn't matter with the huge witch hunt

I also remember reading somewhere that YJG is considering something else aka it looks like it won't happen, at least now.
No news/updates since apparent casting so probably this project died somewhere along the way, maybe will happen later, but for sure not so fast like was expected in the beggining.

Lee Jun Ki should avoid this drama like plague and not just because IU's a rubbish actress (no offense to her, but she doesn't have the experience or talent to pull off angst) but also because he needs a break from historical fusion especially after the hot mess that was Scholar. Ugh. If not for Lee Soo Hyuk's glorious mane of glory, abs and beautiful voice, I would punch myself for sitting through that horrid sack of shite.

I love and adore Lee Jun Ki but over the last few years, he seems to have purposely gone for projects that basically need him to do everything and reduce his female costar to an accessory, which means he ends up taking dramas with less-famous actresses/rookies (the last time he actually had to share equal plot/story space with a female protagonist was in Arang and that's because Shin Mina is a star herself). If he takes this one, it's not a good sign for whoever the female lead is, because they'll get sidelined and get hate for the script's faults/

Korea is in need of excellent and talented young Korean actresses. I sometimes complain why they always cast idol actresses in this dramas/movies but they didnt actually have many choice tbh. Kim Yoojung or Kim Soohyun is too young to take this role and the likes of Park Boyoung usually stay away from this kind of projects. And the other decent actresses like Kim Soeun doesnt have enough star power to lead a drama. So, they ended up casting idols.

I think kim ji won is a really good actress. I love her <3
I didn't watch her projects, but a lot of people are praising park so dam.
lee soo kyung did a good job with her character on hogu's love imo and I hope ryu hye young gains a lot from reply 88.

I agree that maybe they don't have star power yet. but that's a problem to every female in the world lol it will always be easier for a mediocre man got the spotlight while women have to work hard for years and years to gain some respect. the same happen with female idols. it's sad.

I like Kim Ji won too! but sadly she doesn't get big roles :/ still waiting for the rom com for kim jiwon & kim woobin as lead- that chemistry wasted in heirs.

It's not that Korea doesn't already have some great young actresses in their 20s now, it's that most of them get locked out of drama lead role chances far too easily, while the roles keep going to one wooden/mediocre idol actress after another. Idols in general have it much, much easier when it comes to casting, while actresses p much have to jump hoops to get anywhere.

IU actually isn't bad at all when it comes to acting, she's remained solid even in hot mess dramas and risen to the challenge when she got a role that needed it out of her. But Chinese to Korean drama remakes have never gone well, and idk how BBJX will translate to a Korean context at all. Plus if the script fucks her character up like Scholar Who Walks the Night, IU will be the one who takes the heat for it just as Lee Yoobi did for SWWTN.

Why those actresses got locked out of drama lead roles? 10 years ago, it wasn't like that -- as it is more balance between male and female actors. Nowadays, new and upcoming young actors have to pair up with female co-stars much older than them and it has become a trend in the last few years.

I wonder why the industry has become like that. Why it is easier for actors to have breakthrough roles and make them instantly popular while the female actresses struggle to get decent roles (& why they chose to resort to idol actresses instead?). Last time, many young actresses in their 20's got paired up with actors in their late 20's and early 30's but now it is the opposite lol. It wasn't like that 10 years ago. Why the balance drastically change is beyond me.

When I retweeted an Instiz tweet for Jisoo's casting I asked who was playing KimuTaku's role LOL.

Someone was like...no this is BBJX's remake

So...LJK is 4th Prince then who is 8th? If IU is careful with her pronunciation and they pick an era where it's pretty obvious a person who knows the future will bail it could be okay. It wasn't going to bea great remake no matter what but if she has chemistry with her co-stars it could be salvageable.

They could change the ending like the movie did too.

I mean who is going to stay with a guy that KNOW will die because he refused to listen to you and stop going after the throne?

I liked iu on producer, but it was not a really challeging role imo. this is a historical drama and a remake of a famous one to add. and, for the comments here, a female centric. it's a receipt for a disaster (in critics, because it will problably sell a lot considering the casting choices)

I like this models-turned-actors generation as celebrities, but they still need to impress me as actors. and baekhyun? I had no idea sm was pushing him to acting. lol

Nope it was the like biggest Chinese drama of 2012? ( I'm bad with dates). There's actually drama about it bc jade palace (w/ yang mi) aired earlier but that director plagiarized this storyline. That director is notorious for stealing and being shameless.
