Zico finds it hard to understand why anyone would say that he is trying to imitate the success of G-Dragon.

And he has explained why.

On December 7, the Block B leader held an album release event for his first solo mini album “Gallery” which dropped earlier today at midnight.

Both being talented producers and rappers with a strong preference for hip-hop, Zico has been compared to G-Dragon ever since his debut days. Some critics have gone as far as to argue that Zico is being overly influenced by G-Dragon, and trying to follow the same road to the top.

Regarding such claims, Zico said during the album release event, “There’s absolutely no overlap in the music genres of me and G-Dragon. I don’t think it makes sense to say that I’ve copied him.”

Of course, G-Dragon is a senior artist who ranks above me, and I’m incredibly grateful for being compared to him. However, we are on totally different paths.”

“I think people [claiming I'm copying him] are not fans of G-Dragon, but rather individuals who disapprove of my actions. But their behavior doesn’t affect me at all. I couldn’t care less,” Zico shared his thoughts on his critics and haters.

Meanwhile, Zico’s latest title track “Eureka” has topped the charts since its release, proving once again the wide appeal of his work.

Do you agree with Zico’s points?

I agree. Zico's path to success is pretty separate from GD's. Zico collaborates with a ton of other Khip-hop/R&B artists and his fame is pretty detached from Block B while GD is still closely tied to BB as their producer (despite having a solo career) and rarely steps out of his YG bubble if only for the rare collaborations with certain artists like Nell or Kim Yoonah.

And tbh I think Zico's both a better producer (though kinda close) and rapper (by far) than GD.

My 2c.

Rap wise, Zico is better and there isn't a single person who can deny it. GD is ok but I've honestly never seen him as that much of a rapper.

As producers, Zico can't touch GD on his best day, and that's understandable since GD has been doing this longer. Zico is capable of making good songs but sadly all the ones he's known for are well bad.

I get his pov but his company did try to pimp him out as the new/next GD for the first few years of BlockB's career. He managed to detach himself from it later on but I don't know if that's a good thing, GD can be too much but Zico is on a whole new Jay Park level of too much.

Are Zico's produced songs entirely on his own? Because GD only has like three songs that are only under his name as composer the last time I checked (which was before MADE), which is... yeah.

What does that matter GD never hid the fact that he got help on songs. And being able to produce the song and be a good producer doesn't automatically make you good at making arrangements, at editing and mastering etc. And sometimes you don't have the time to do all that even if you can, that's why any music company has people who do that. Lucky YG always gives credit to all those people and that's why most of those songs become hits.

This doesn't take away from the fact that GD spearheaded making of those songs.

And that's why Zico doesn't have a hit.

Jay Park needs his own level.

~Mo-Mo-Mommae~

It's weird because Zico is like a cat-dog mix of idol and hip hop artist. He's controversial for an idol and fairly tame for a KHH rapper. KHH is a world full of tools, someone like Vasco hits the tryhard level out of the park.

"KHH is a world full of tools" ain't this the truth. The only ones that are not as messy (to my knowledge) are HuckP (<3) and Palo (even tho his association with CHRT and Bfree make me side-eye his ass constantly).

Vasco disappointed me so much. I don't get what the fuck happened to him....

Literally the only reason why people make comparison is bc when block b debuted they kept saying they wanted to emulate GD/Top/BB so he can blame Stardom's mediaplay and the fact that ppl mever forget.

It's interesting that BAP/BTS never got those comparisons, at least not to the extent that Block B got.

yeah when they came out Stardom really tried to push them as the next Big Bang, they compared Zico to TOP being a rapper before being in a group, they compared Zico to GD in terms of fashion and they obviously tried front he way they styled him @ first. BAP had that alien origin~ and BTS had the dark past of unfortunate choices I try to forget.

Wait are you saying BAP matoki concept is embarrassing :( ? They're still doing it. It's a part of the comeback for Matrix.

No I love the Matoki concept, I am a hug B.A.P fan! I'm just saying it was so different from most other debut concepts that's why they would not have had any comparisons.

What's the reason for other idol groups and idols getting compared to GD and Big Bang? It sure isn't just Block B ;)

From: [identity profile] audiograms.livejournal.com
other groups get compared to GD or BB but in Zico's case the comparisons endure because Stardom made the comparisons a lot when they debuted. I can se why Zico wants to distance himself from that considering the relationship he has with ChoPD etc any idol group with more than one rapper or with a more hip hop influenced sound is automatically going to get compared to them.

I didn't read, but he's right.

afro-loving-blackface-wearing-lyrically-gift-chipmunk vs punkass-bitchs-for-fake-dreads-only-to-realize-he's-not-bout-dat-life-nword-loving-reasonably-gifted-producer is a mute point. No yolo-swag is lesser than another tbh.

Lmaoo they're exactly the same to me!
Zico is a baby GD
They both are trying to profit off Black culture & 'cool' and they both are ignorant as hell and really, really, not that cute.
I can admit they both have bops and can occasionally be entertaining tho.

there are def similarities wrt the whole ripping off/meticulously following and copying black culture (just enough to be considered real for the stage but then deny any real responsibility of the music/music video/lyrics) so when they're both copying the same hip-hop trend, obvi some of their songs/promotions will look similar.

The only thing in common for me is that they're both my problematic faves
I think Zico is stronger producer/rapper though, 'cause GD's verses and choruses never match production wise.
However GD has a sense of rhythm, and then there is Zico lol

Two people copying the similar things, yes, but I do see why Zico would say they don't copy each other.

It's a matter of taste obviously. I prefer Zico and friends' beats normally, as I hear more depth there, but the majority buys GD's work like candy, so he must also be very very goood at what he's doing. (Wasn't that MV a sort of a GD shade btw?)

I agree, comparisons are pointless. More than one person can rap/produce at the same time.

Zico letting GD fans off the hook, lmao, he's smart.

As for copying GD's method of reaching the top. Which crew is GD a part of, what's his mixtape called, how many hip hop concerts does he perform at, when did he judge for a rap TV competition, how many connections does he have within the hip hop community in Korea?

Can't find that 'same path to success' they mentioned.
