you can have a respect for someone and still use hurtful words and language towards them - these aren't mutually exclusive. especially considering the kind of language centering around idols with darker skin, a lot of this is also internalized between n and all the members. this doesn't make it ok; saying they respect him doesn't mean that they can't hurt his feelings and make him upset. people close to you can still say hurtful things and judging by his reaction every time they do it, it's hurtful.

I feel bad for recognizing with both sides. I know what it's liked to be ///teased/// for things that you are but I also can admit I've done things (sometimes a lot more maliciously) as the others have. i had an irracional dislike for them with their debut, them hyde came and turned me into a fan, but the kind of shit they pulled with N and still do made me dislike them yet again. Theres literally no excuse, its not like Hakyeon thinks its funny too and they need to fucking stop, if not because they see its wrong then at least because its making them lose fans like me. i took a break from vixx (well kpop overall-) for months because i was getting so fed up with how they treat N. I just started getting back into them but seeing this just makes me wanna u-turn. Honestly I'm only into vixx for N, he's such a talented and great person they rlly need to realize they're being asshats and it's not cute at all. he's even expressed before how much he dislikes these comments and wishes the members would be nicer to him, multiple times

I love leo and I love all the boys to death. But this was in poor taste and they as grown men should know better, especially when N consider Leo his best friend. It's gonna be such a long time before jokes like this stop being a thing. And until idols start clapping back at other members for things like this, it's just gonna be a never ending messy cycle.

Even when the recipient reacts negativity the comments just continue, the members probably just assume they are being overly sensitive. I feel like it would have to degenerate into a fist fight to be taken seriously. I wonder what the behind the scenes dynamic is in some groups. Like sometimes the person whose skin tone gets mocked the most isn't even the darkest in the group. An example is BAP, Youngjae has made negative comments about Jongup's skin color but to my knowledge he has never done that to Daehyun.

I have been absolutely baffled as to how long term fans can willfully ignore this kind of bullshit. I'm struggling and I've only been around for four months; some VIXX fans have been around since debut. How? The amount of shit of this kind is absolutely unbelievable. I'm trying to justify my continued interest because I really, really do like Hakyeon (and the other members at various degrees), but it's extremely difficult.

I understand that no one involved means any harm, and I am certain that Hakyeon doesn't believe his members mean him harm, but that doesn't suddenly absolve the writers or the other members of fault. This isn't just a case of bad behavior, it's a case of bad behavior that is reflecting on the image of the band and the company itself. I know it's not considered an issue in Korea, but this is an issue internationally and continued ignorance of the issue is losing them current and potential customers. I'm not even talking about the fanbase anymore, I'm just talking about people willing to put any kind of money on their products. Literally, the first thing I ever heard about VIXX, even before their music, was the colorism, and if I hadn't gotten curious about Hakyeon and Hyuk from Hitmaker I probably would have ignored them entirely. I'm still on tenterhooks about Hakyeon's wellbeing pretty much on the day to day. I'm pretty sure the rest of the international VIXX fandom feels similarly, if they're not wildly apologizing for this kind of shit left and right. That pool of fans is only going to get smaller if their current reputation continues to precede them like this. International fandom can ignore this, but it's true. If the decay of their international fandom can't convince them that this is a problem, what can?

I know there have been fan petitions and letters, but if VIXX hasn't seen them or have ignored them, like, what are we supposed to do besides deal with it? This is honestly getting to be a marketing issue at this point; if VIXX ever wants an international fanbase, they need to start telling writers and the members to tone this shit down or else this is as big as they're ever going to get, excluding the domestic fandom. It's just... true. And that's really sad, since Hakyeon's dream is for their music to gain a much broader audience than their fanclub. This isn't going to happen at this rate.

It's a hard thing because it's a social problem as well. They would have to have people explain to them that this is an issue, but that's hard to do when a good amount of people from the same country that you hale from all kind of share the same view point. I feel like it would take an idol who didn't grow up in South Korea to actually bring the issue to light. Until the darker skin Koreans are gonna want to be pale and other Koreans will put being the color of a sheet of paper on a pedestal. International fans can talk about this until we are blue in the face, but it will be Koreans job to really make that changes and want to something about it.

In fact, I think, I hope, it really is just good-natured teasing between friends. The problem is that it's not just between friends. It's in front of the whole audience. I wish you knew how it comes across to international fans. I'll bet darker-skinned Korean fans are saddened by it, as well. In front of the cameras, if N really was hurt or angry or fed up, he'd still have to go along with it. But even if he's fine with it, imagine a Starlight with beautiful tan or brown skin thinking that you'd think she was ugly - that you would laugh at her.

You know, my Korean is almost up to translating that lot. Somebody give me a mailing address. (Although any letter I send to Leo will inevitably include a lot of confused rambling about chipmunks and orgasms.)

N and Kai should form a subunit and release a killer dance track about being so cool that you don't care what people say about how you look. (ft Tao - if only)

ETA: Somebody fill me in on the fan petition etc. Was it a project of international fans? Have Korean fans spoken up? Since i-fans are such a tiny proportion of the customers / audience, not offending us is probably not high on the to-do list.

Jelpi hasn't given a feedback about the ifan petition, and frankly, we didn't really expect them too. We just wanted them to know the situation. I know for a fact that the letter was sent. A physical copy of the document. Translated into korean and proofread by 3 different korean translators. But no response. And we don't know if the members got it. And vixx is one of those groups with a solid kfanbase but almost nonexistent ifanbase (at least compared to most groups)

And i don't think kfans knew about the petition, but cfans knew and afaik they thought english speaking ifans were being ~dramatic~ Kfans probably would have gotten mad if they knew, since they really blew up when a couple of fansite masters got really mad over people editing their work. The anti-whitewashing thing over at tumblr? Yeah, they were mad for days about ifans and racism.

I have an actual question that's related to this, and I hope I don't come off as condescending. How can you tell if something is colorist? I don't have a lot of experience with this sort of thing so to me, this seems more like they wanted to win so they picked the trait that N is known for.
I've been trying to be more aware of this in my own life, but I'm never sure what counts as colorist or not. If I say, "Ugh, I look terrible, I got so tan" is that colorist?
Again, I don't want to sound like I'm justifying them, I'm genuinely confused. Can anyone help me out?
