Article: 'Grapevine' Hong Suk Chun, "There's a popular girl group member with wealthy parents"

Source: Sports Donga via Daum

"At first, her idol group didn't do well and they were at risk of disbandment. But her wealthy father stepped in and poured his money into the group to promote them." When asked if the group eventually got popular, he revealed, "He supported them continuously until they got popular. Now they're very famous. The group definitely benefited off of that one member."

1. [+591, -47] So it's either Girl's Day or EXID...

2. [+569, -36] Either reveal the names or don't talk about it at all, so frustrating

3. [+381, -43] Yura

4. [+106, -6] Why bother talking about something you're not going to reveal the name to, it just ends up getting innocent people accused

5. [+80, -5] Way better than serving sponsors. Nothing wrong with a father supporting his daughter's group.

6. [+49, -1] Yura's father is an SK board member and they do live in the most expensive apartment in Ulsan but I don't think he's that rich. And Hani's family is middle income at best, definitely not that wealthy either.

7. [+122, -75] Maybe it's EXID's Hani. She studied abroad in China which any average family can't afford. She's also good at other things which means her family had to be wealthy enough to support her in them.

8. [+56, -10] A Pink??

exid got successful because of a fancam/sleeper hit single... i don't think that's really something you can fake... don't see how it could be them

But it's said that he supported them till they got popular, not that the money he poured somehow made them achieve their popularity. I kinda get it as that dad's money let them survive through really nugu/crappy time and when they become bigger he didn't have to do it anymore, but the reason of gg shoot to stardom is not stated. Like without his money they would disband already but also not like they money did everything.

Speak that truth netizen #4. Even though my first reaction is curiosity, it still bugs me a bit B and C-list celebs drop vague hints about more famous people that end up implicating a lot of people.

Lmao at this non-story. Wealth can get you farther in the entertainment industry than talent? Shocker (it's sad I know, but still).

I agree with netizen five,as long as the funds weren't obtained illegally, it's just a father spending money on his daughter.

Slightly OT, but it would make a lot of sense to me if many (if not most) k-pop idols came from well-off families. The amount of debt they can get into during the trainee process alone...

i always assume foreign trainees come from affluent backgrounds because of that reason. sending your only child (chinese trainees) to a foreign country when they're 10-15 years old to join an agency, incur debt they might never be able to pay back for a chance at fame is a risky bet. plus you have to provide for your child for all those years financially so im 99.99% all foreign trainees come from wealth.

It's Yura and her dad. I lurked around certain k-communities (including wgm dc lol don't judge. I stopped after a while) and I'm pretty sure GsD fans know about it. The company was very strapped for cash and the CEO even sold his car (or was it his house) to invest in one of their releases before they hit big.

Ugh at these shitty rumors. Like netizen 5 said it is ok for the father to invest in his daughters career. Also this guy is so ott didnt he once claim that one of the famous idol(same sex) pairing were actually true sparking off so many rumors back in the day.

a lot of wealthy people buy their children contracts and give them connections and stuff (pretty sure taylor swifts parents bought her first contract before she really became famous). life is just easier when youre rich. i dont see why he needs to mention it

This definitely feels like a pink to me if only because of how Yoo-kyung's father reacted. I could believe the girls themselves had no idea but it was all behind the scenes stuff with the company itself.

Is this supposed to be a bad thing? I can think of a number of groups who deserve more exposure and who would surely benefit from having more cash to get some proper promo. This group was very lucky, good for them.

They hit big after Yookyung left. Naeun is pretty well-off too but it was Yookyung who was mediaplayed as rich. There was speculation her dad bought A Pink dorm but he himself clarified it's not true (http://www.soompi.com/2015/01/02/former-a-pink-member-hong-yoo-kyungs-father-clears-up-rumors-surrounding-her-leave/).
It's Yura.

I don't think it's A Pink because it would have been suggested that one member left... especially since her dad was indeed rich (and was pissed at the decision, which I totally understand). Also, the big hit No No No happened after they got rid of her and the company is related to Cube which didn't have money problems back then.
Can't be EXID lol I don't imagine Hani's father taking the fancam or buying new views on it wtf.
Girl's Day would make more sense. Even if Hyeri's relation with Tony put them on the map when it comes to public attention, they still needed money to buy and record songs, film the MV...

Anyway... who cares? A father does what he wants with his money, I'm not surprised that he would support his daughter's dream but want to keep it low. As long as the money doesn't come from illegal activities I really don't see a problem at all.

IA that I don't think it's a bad thing. The rich dad of one of them supported them until they could support themselves. Awful, huh? I bet many of the idol parents that aren't rich wish they could do the same.

If I was the rich dad, and saw my daughter living and working under stressful and health deterioring conditions, I would use my money to get her OUT of said shitty company tbh. I wouldn't care about what they want, their health before their non-lasting career in an over-saturated market.

I wish we lived in a world where money couldn't buy you success and opportunities but at the same time I kind of wish one of the After School members had a rich benefactor who could turn Pledis around and give them the comeback they deserve ;)

I'm feelin some kinda way about him throwing an unnamed girl group under the bus

Like they aren't regularly accused of being talentless to begin with

But if he wanna dish some dirt on a boy group tho...

I dunno, I don't see the huge deal? My student money was cut by the government, so my parents have been supporting me throughout college and I work whenever I can, doing my part too, and planning to give back too. That's not a scandal, that's keeping your kid's career afloat, even if it should eventually take off and stand on its own.

Block B had a similar thing, when Stardom was ripping them off it was P.O's father who bought the group's stage outfits. Let's not kid ourselves, idols are generally poor, over-worked and half-starving, maybe if they got decent wages and work hours their parents wouldn't have to swoop in like that.
