Super Junior’s Kang In, who was booked for beating up a patron in a bar brawl a month ago, was booked again Friday for fleeing the scene after causing a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol, police said.

On the band’s Web site, Kangin posted a long letter to apologize to his fans. “I have nothing to say but say sorry thousands of times. I should have been more cautious but I’m really sorry for disappointing you again.”

According to the police, Kang, while driving a rental car at a speed of 40-50 kilometers per hour, caused an accident involving two taxis on a road in Gangnam, southern Seoul, at 3.10 a.m., Thursday. He hit the first taxi, which was pushed forward and hit the other cab in front.

The moment after the accidents, he got out of the car and ran from the scene. About six hours later, he surrendered himself to the police station in Gangnam. His blood alcohol level was 0.081 percent, high enough to have his license revoked.

Two taxi drivers and two passengers involved in the incident sustained no major injuries.
Police asked Kang to report to the police station Friday for investigation, but he had failed to appear by late afternoon. A police officer said they will summon him again.

Peoples thoughts about this issue?

ELFs has started their own petition explaining that he is an artist, but he is a human too. He makes mistakes. Theyre asking people to forgive him. currently 137 231 people have signed it. (including shawol, vip, hottest, cass and triple s members)

Netizens are furious over Kangin’s DUI accident. due to the fact that he is an “idol”, he is supposed to maintain that idol image, but he has been involved in a bar fight and now the DUI accident.

On the Korean site Agora, they are petitioning for him to be banned (otherwise be removed from Super Junior). up till now, there has been 176 206 signatures, they are aiming for 10,000.

He has made an official apology already, but netizens are still unhappy

(The numbers are stil increasing.. )

While removal from Super Junior is too much (other celebs have gotten away with worse, and the ultimate impact would be a hugely messy mess of epic proportions), I believe that as someone who has committed a crime, he needs to receive the punishment he deserves, especially because he's an idol.

I agree with you, except to the point "especially because he's an idol". Does it imply that his punishment should be more severe than ordinary citizens? In the eye of law, he's just another citizen, and should be punished according to the regular law (would be better if the punishment include rehab and/or social work).
And please, he's only a man too. He might be an idol but he's not an Angel, let alone God. He make mistakes and should suffer the consequences as well. But not more than you and me.
Everybody deserves a second (or 3rd,4th, etc) chance.

the situations are very different and, besides the netizens stirring up crap where they're not asked to, they can't really be compared

kangin has committed a crime, not too long after the assault ordeal. he deserves to be punished as much as a non-celebrity would be for the exact same "crimes" he has committed. jae did not commit a crime, jae was misunderstood.

granted, there's the netizens that have their faces glued to their computers waiting to stir more crap with kangin's case, just like they did with jae. it's a very different situation... but after jae's... i don't even know what the expect from the netizens anymore

I don't understand people who defend him.
He was under the influence of alcohol and on top of that HE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. Good thing nothing happened to him, the drivers or passengers.
So I can understand people who are unhappy with only the apology. People make mistakes, but people should pay for it. And so does Kangin in my opinion.
I stopped really care if he is banned from Super Junior.

Doesn't matter if he is an idol or just another regular person, gotta do time for his crime. ELF needs to just stfd and leave the punishment-making up to the people with the mental capacity and jurisdiction to dole out commensurate punishment. Since he turned himself in, wouldn't it just be like a suspension of license plus a shitload of community service?

Date: 2009-10-17 03:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] prototypic.livejournal.com
the thing is, ELF isn't asking for the law to go lax on him, they're asking for people to forgive him. you know why? because netizens can destroy an idol's life. he will probably get whatever you mentioned, but if those other netizens who want him banned have their way, he'll also get his life messed up forever.
