Security forces in the South Korean capital Seoul have clashed with protesters during one of the country's biggest street rallies in recent years.
Police used tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators demanding the resignation of conservative President Park Geun-hye.
Tens of thousands of people of took part in the march, according to police.
It brought together various groups, including trade unions opposed to the president's business-friendly policies.
Others were protesting against the imposition of state-approved history schoolbooks, which they say whitewash South Korea's past dictatorships.
Many marchers chanted "Park Geun-hye, step down''. Security forces fired tear gas when some of them tried to break through police barricades as they moved towards the presidency.
Park Geun-hye, South Korea's first female president, was elected two years ago.
She is pushing through controversial plans to make labour markets more flexible by giving employers more leeway in dismissing workers.

Date: 2015-11-14 11:37 pm (UTC)For me the issue lies in race relations in America and how we are in the process of another civil rights movement. and while its upsetting how "chaotic" things are getting since I was so used to just accepting things as they were before I am somewhat glad we are no longer tossing issues like these under the rug. I feel like for korea and all of the other countries it is the same. They literally tried to get over and continue being ,but it literally got to the point where you can no longer just close your mouth and be complacent and now they are being active in changing things for the better.

Date: 2015-11-14 11:49 pm (UTC)last week, there was a very similar situation in romania, thousands of people marching on the street disgruntled with the government after 50 people died in an explosion. we had the same problem last year around the presidential elections and finally the government resigned last week. but now that it happened, i'm scared people are going to think of we achieved our goal and start to not care anymore. i do have faith in the my generation, who seems to take an interest and paying more attention to politics, that they're not gonna take it anymore.
what i hope is that this unrest everywhere will end well for the people and make up for the suffering and all the lives lost.

Date: 2015-11-15 12:08 am (UTC)First a mass of immigrants and countries who don't know how to deal with them and now what's happened in Paris...the opinions were already split but I get the feeling that now it's going to be real bad. And not just for syrians but muslims in general. It's horrible.
I also fear that right-wing groups will gain even more traction over this whole ordeal and I'm not sure what that could possibly mean to me if they'd ever gain the upper hand.
The handling of the protest in SK is upsetting. I really hope that the public's wishes change something.

Date: 2015-11-15 02:01 pm (UTC)As a student I am so horrifically scared of what is going to happen when I graduate in July. Jobs/housing/finances are basically fucked unless you're rich.
But with the issues of refugees i can see this getting really ugly, really quickly. Which is what ISIS want, imo. They want the west to be divided and sustain the hate so they have more fuel for their agenda :((
edit: forgot to add ***i don't think paris is a distraction, obvs what happened was horrific. :((((( but governments like to use these sorts of things to make it less obvious they're pushing through controversial agendas.

Date: 2015-11-15 01:41 am (UTC)There's always something happening anywhere in the world, man-made, you know? And I don't know what to do except feel helplessness for what seems a very bleak future.
Going a bit personal here, but it's actually one of the reasons why I have no plans if having kids, because what use of bringing children into a world filled with all this hatred and violence? The world just keeps getting crazier and crazier.

Date: 2015-11-15 02:00 am (UTC)I cant really explain it ,but I am sure the process of nurturing a little one more than makes up for the fear that the world will beat and destroy them. Especially when you see them overcome those very things that try to keep them down.
lol I feel like I am not making sense now ,but I don't think I can let hatred and violence have that much control over me that I am fearful enough to not enjoy my life and have kids, if I did I would just be doing exactly what it intended in the first place.

Date: 2015-11-15 03:09 am (UTC)I think it's quite sad that the world has got to a point that does not encourage life. Not that it's not a valid choice with a valid reason, I'm not so sure I want children myself, but you know, we can't let it go on like this forever and we can maybe raise educated, tolerant children and things can change little by little. It's terrifying rn, but we can't just let it go to the dump completely. I don't know what's with this optimism lol I'm trying not to let myself break down. I've had a little bit of faith restored by how things back home in Romania were handled recently, I want to believe there are people like that everywhere :(

Date: 2015-11-15 01:05 am (UTC)teary gas and water cannons are really common on protest on my country tho .... i don't know if that's a good or a bad thing because here some people actually goes to protest just to hurt police force and make a mess
if protesters are peaceful police must be peaceful too, but if protesters are making vandalism there should be some control too for the sake of people that went to protest for a good reason

Date: 2015-11-15 03:01 am (UTC)The past few days have been so fucking terrible.
I am 'glad' to see things like this, in that it's always uplifting in a way to see that people will try to resist injustice even if it's at a cost to their personal safety and comfort. I respect what they are demanding but it depresses me that they have to even do this and that they are being suppressed like this.
I don't know much about the labor rights movement in South Korea so this was a great help as a jump off point. Thanks OP and mods!

Date: 2015-11-15 01:46 pm (UTC)it's unfair how these silent protesters are being treated this way since no violence had had happened during their protest
the government in each country should always remember that these people are human beings, too, and if not for them, they wouldn't be sitting wherever they are right now.
it's also so disgusting how hushed up the media is about all of these when these kinds of things should be made public to the whole world in order to put a stop at this atrocity.
it's so scary how chaotic things have been happening within just a few days and i hope that everyone stays safe

Date: 2015-11-18 01:53 am (UTC)Korea’s current PM, Park Geun hye has proposed to make complete alterations to the nation-wide textbook, consisting of heavily biased views about past events in order to manipulate and warp both history and its citizens. The new textbook condemns the Korean independence movement as well as glazing over the dictatorship of her father, erasing the history of thousands who were abused over his leadership."
