Wow they've really come so far since those messy debut days, they're a coherent group now and I'm excited to see what they do next. The live vocals were really good. I'm so proud of them for this performance <3

I have to say I laughed so hard at Joy's cute but anticlimactic "Congratulations exo-sunbaenim!" when they finally get to the mic after walking like 5 kilometers up to the stage in those 60s doll outfits lol.

That was maybe one of the reasons why people disliked them, but remember that a lot of people were rightfully pissed off about their Happiness MV including footage from terrorist attacks? I mean that is the kind of fuck-up that could have ruined them if they weren't protected by a big label. The song itself had a few moments of clarity but it was mostly messy, especially coupled with the cheerleaders in the jungle concept. Then they had that emergency Jessicagate damage control comeback with Be Natural which was just unfortunate and really unfair to them imo. None of this was their fault, they always had potential, it's just that SM didn't know what they were doing at first. Now they've really grown into their skin and recovered their confidence.

Yeah I think their debut was rushed, they probably were supposed to debut with Yeri and was waiting for her to get a bit older (or at the process of casting the final girl) when Sulli scandal happened and they were rush debuted with Happiness (I like the song though, and I like Red Velvet as 4 too lol)
and I almost forget that Be Natural (which features that trainee) exists.

The derision aimed at the girls was very much rooted in people's bitterness over f(x) and everything else just spurred on the dislike that was already present. The group itself and the girls themselves haven't drastically changed to bring about the positive reactions they elicit now, people have just finally kind of gotten over it.
