This is what Japan currently looks like. EXO-Ls have covered the streets and even subway stations with EXO. I hope Korean EXO-Ls can do even half of what Japanese EXO-Ls do

- Wow..

- Daebak..

- But aren’t they supposed to focus on Korea and China? I feel like they should give more time promoting in China..

- The pictures don’t do the situation right now justice…their Japanese debut is so successful..SM please lets do better in Korea now.

...EXO is already taking Japan by storm.

lol okay...let us just ignore the fact that this kind of advertisement happens pretty much all the time a big artist/group releases something new here.

But congrats. Their sells are pretty good for a KPop-group in Japan nowadays.

lmao right? to say that any k-pop group is "taking japan by storm" with their debut release is a little presumptuous. we gotta see how they do with future releases and then we'll see how it goes.

Mhm, I actually talked with some friends about this topic last week and we all came to the conclusion that they will do alright, but that we can only laugh about people who think that EXO will bring Hallyu back to Japan. All this "going to take Japan by storm"-arguments are pretty much just "noise marketing".

But let's see how it goes. My sis got tickets for their Dome concert and I'm kinda excited. I saw them live once before, which was not so grand, because they all looked super tired. Hope this time is better!

oh yeah, it's completely noise marketing. i feel like sm is still scrambling about losing both members of tvxq to enlisting this year considering that most of the company's revenue came from their promotions, touring, releases, ect. in japan. exo is gonna do well because they had a predetermined fanbase there "predebut" but, despite the ~hallyu wave dying down there, there's still groups that do well: shinee, snsd, kara, 2pm, big bang. got7, btob and boyfriend do pretty well too. (this isn't including tvxq, obv.) what they need to do is find a niche that sticks them out from other k-pop groups debuting there because if they stick with the same concept every time they won't ever draw in new fans.

ooooh! that should be exciting though. i've heard that tokyo dome concerts are always... exhilarating? idk the right word for it, lmao.

Kpop has pretty much become a niche market in Japan, but it still got fans, who also support more than one group. When I visited SNSD's Third Japan Tour, I met people, who were actually Shinee-fans, but they still got tickets for SNSD so they just went. And I guess at EXO's Dome Tour there will also be general KPop-fans and not just Japanese EXO-L's (and let's not forget the fans from Korea and China).

i've heard that tokyo dome concerts are always... exhilarating?

Haha...well, I've been to a lot already, so I guess I'm not that excited anymore, but it's still always a great experience. Tokyo Dome is a great venue!

that's what i've heard too. i was following some fan accounts during shinee's tokyo dome concert and the people who had attended from it mentioned that a lot of the concert goers were fans of other groups or locals who bought tickets to the concert out of curiosity. so, it should be interesting.

ooooh! i believe it.

EXO could never fill Dome venues (especially not Tokyo Dome) with only Japanese EXO-L's. They're popular, but not THAT popular!

Challenging Arashi?! Yeah, I highly doubt that! xd
And they seem to be doing the 48 family thing; releasing lots of different versions with the same content just another cover!

Is there a chance Kpop can ever regain it's foot hold in Japan? Or is China really the next stop?

I'm not a music expert, but I don't believe that Hallyu/KPop will ever be as big as it was again in Japan. We've our own idols and artists. I think one of the reasons why the Hallyu slowly died down in Japan was because Japanese fans concentrated more on their own artists again. Hallyu really was a wave, which took Japan by storm. It was something new and different, because KPop idols are so different from JPop ones, but even new things will stop being new one day.

I honestly think that SM/EXO should concentrate on China. It would have made more sense as they had four Chinese members once. They really, really lost the chance to make it big there. They could still try, of course, but it seems like they don't want to. I really don't understood SM's business decisions...! -.-

It's been 3 years since last time I visited Japan and even then I could tell that hallyu wasn't that big anymore. I guess nowadays is even less relevant. Japan cares a lot more about their own idols than about any K-pop artist aside from maybe DBSK.

Jup, you pretty much summed up the things I tell overexcited KPop-fans, whenever they try to tell me that KPop is still superpopular in Japan! -.-

Because plenty of those people probably haven't even been in Japan. I've seen people saying that kpop is big there because "kpop acts still sell out Tokyo Dome" when one thing is a group having their own fans that obviously go to their concerts / some casual people interested and another being popular with the general public like Boa, DBSK or Kara/SNSD at their prime used to be. You have some groups that still do well but it's mostly fandom-wise. Johnny's and 48 family groups are the mainstream idols in Japan.

Mhm, I just wrote in my other comment further up, that not only the fans of KPop-groups visit concerts here, but also the general public (we Japanese love our concerts! xd). Also Chinese and Korean fans come. The time of KPop is over in Japan. We've our own idols (most popular like you said Johnny's and 48 groups) and artists.

Japan cares a lot more about their own idols than about any K-pop artist

it's also important to add that Korean acts are banned from Japanese variety shows, award shows, and music programs.
You have to look up the latest acts and song up online cuz they're not promoted on TV anymore (unless you're DBSK, Big Bang, or SNSD)

Oh really? I didn't have any idea of that o_o What's the reason?

From: [identity profile] camified.livejournal.com
..because they're korean. general anti-korean sentiment + a rightwing government meant it was only a matter of time before broadcasters succumbed to internal pressure to pull korean content. one specific theory that the government intervened bc they're trying to push 'cool japan' as their own major cultural import and obviously the kpop/hallyu wave would conflict with that.

it's been going on since 2013 so i'm surprised you haven't heard lol.
