I found about this through ONTD_Political, but I think it's something we should be aware of as a community, especially all you mods. I'm going to copy foofighter0234 's original message:

I learned this from a mod in another community:

Something/someone is going around LJ and hacking accounts of users who mod large communities. After hacking the mod LJ, they go to the community, make a post with links, and then disable comments. They also delete all the community contents (as well as the contents of the mod LJs).

If you see a post in this community by any of our mods, saying that they are closing the community with links given in the post...

1- DO NOT CLICK ON THEM.
2- EMAIL US, PM US, CALL US IF YOU KNOW US PERSONALLY. LET US KNOW ABOUT IT.
3- REPORT THE ENTRY TO LJ (CLICK ON THE FLAG BUTTON)
4- DON'T CLICK LINKS!!!

I know that they are apparently attacking large communities with 500+ users, but I just wanted to give a shout out to let everyone know the situation.
I'm not panicking here, but I just want to inform you what's going on in case it happens. Hopefully it won't, however.

Now, we may not be in any immediate danger, but it's DEFINITELY something to keep in mind, and if you yourself are a member of additional larger communities, it may be something you want to pass along ASAP if the mods and members are not already aware.

Ugh, someone tried to hack my account. I got a password change request in my email box that I never asked for. Stupid hackers. Obv they weren't professional. I've seen this key thing at the top of some mods profiles that links to PGP (http://www.pgp.com/) GPG (http://www.gnupg.org/). Apparently it's some sort of extra protection. I'll look into it.

Also, check your emails that you've registered. According to someone at the linked post, it's another way they try to hack. Make sure the email you manage with is the current one only and delete info on any old ones you used to manage your account with.

I get mine just fine.

Try this:

1.) Go Home
2.) Select the "Manage Accounts" option
3.) Then select the "Privacy" tab
4.) Beside where it says "Email Addresses", select "view past email addresses"

Yeah, I don't use my old email address for lj anymore. And no one knows the account that I use for my lj. All the comments from that email get forwarded to another email account that I'm currently using.
