This is the difference imho between f(x) and snsd. They live and breathe their concepts. Their 60s/70s aesthetic is really believable to me, as opposed to snsd's slightly gimmicky retro style (Hoot, Lion Heart). I always feel as if snsd's concepts (however gorgeous they look) are pseudo lite versions. Wonder Girls did the 80s so authentically, I hope f(x) will do the same here.

That's definitely a huge problem with SNSD. They always seem like they're playing dress up instead of actually owning a concept. It's why I couldn't enjoy You Think at all. It's mostly SM's fault for giving them really campy, inauthentic concepts anyways. SM's art directors really seem to understand what concepts fit f(x) which is why their promotional material is always miles ahead of most other groups.

IA, except I did like bits of You Think lol. They looked great in the live performances. I mean, Party was harmless and forgettable and Lion Heart, I understand why they went the flapper way I guess but yeah. F(x) seems to have way better material to work with.

I thought some of them were really killing it during You Think, like Taeyeon and Sooyoung had my attention a lot in performances. For others I didn't feel it as much, especially in the video. But I totally agree with you about them staying away from any 50s/60s/70s concept from now on lol.

I think it's more a problem with SM than the girls themselves. Half of SNSD don't enjoy their singles and I wouldn't be surprised if they're fed up with the innocent aura they still have to go with. Taeyeon is a good example, the way she owns 'I' concept is the complete opposite of 'Lionheart' (even though I thought she did fine for 'Lionheart').
While f(x) can be adventurous and arty, SM knows the right songs/concepts for them (the whole 70s aesthetic just screams Krystal) and they like their songs (even if it might not be the case at first listen), so I'm not surprised their owning their concepts a lot better than SNSD

Maybe part of the problem is the amount of members too? Like, there's obviously standouts in each concept cycle but there's no one size fits all. I actually liked Mr Mr, they seemed comfortable in that, or I Got A Boy maybe? I did like Genie the best out of all their campy dress up concepts though.

Of course, this discussion is only taking into account their Korean songs.

It could be. They all have really different personnalities and tastes and, while it translates great unto variety, it doesn't when it comes to concept.

I think Mr Mr was the right song with the right concept, at the right time. They're all grown up; so having a concept with suit/lady-like dress and powerful attitude seems to have brought all of them together (The Boys could have been a bit early). They also didn't have so much pression - unlike the three singles lately. And that's another reason I like the Japanese songs (especially the first album): it seemed to fit them and fullfill their growths as women, so they went with the concepts a lot more than Korean ones.
Genie is my favourite too, but they were not as clear with liking/not liking songs as they are now when Genie was released so idk. They all performed it flawlessly anyway

For IGAB I always had the feeling that they weren't really comfortable with the song, unlike the concept (the way they tried to explain you'll have to listen to it 99 times to like the 100th or something like that). Also, they dropped it as soon as they could on Weekly Idol, while other songs (ITNW, RDR) were part of a longer discussion (some members didn't wanted to drop them).

yep fx concepts are more interesting and natural while snsd is more public friendly.
