omonatheydidIndeed, Wonder Girls is one of the girl groups that had many ups and downs. To some extent, they were really the wonder girls of the world like their name. ‘Tell Me’ and ‘Nobody’ turned Korea upside down. They also entered US market and unbelievably ranked 76th of Hot 100 Chart of Billboard. It is more unbelievable that they were evaluated as failure in US market.
Members kept changing. Hyuna withdrew, Yubin joined, Sunmi potentially withdrew, Hyerim joined, Sunye married and became pregnant, Sohee withdrew, and Sunmi joined again. Maybe Wonder Girls would be the girl group that had the most frequent change of members. But they are still making performances and next year is their 10th anniversary of the debut. With Girls’ Generation and Kara, they are the most long-lasting girl group. They changed themselves into a band in the perfect comeback song ‘Reboot’. It shows their determination to reboot their team and start again.
In retrospect to the history of Korean girl groups, Wonder Girls would have broken apart since they had so many ups and downs. But they are still preparing for tomorrow and eager for challenges. They were unstable incessantly but still progressing uprightly. It’s a wonder how they got that energy.
Wonder Girls told their story from their debut with ‘Irony’ in 2007 to ‘I Feel You’ in 2015. It reminded the word ‘friendship’ which grew through hardship and didn’t break apart like a diamond. It was because of the ‘friendship’ that they didn’t break apart. They shared the experience of US tour on the bus, crying in front of the journalists while talking about their US performances, withdrawal and joining of members. And their friendship grew through it.
To a question, “Don’t you feel bad about Sohee who left to act?”, they replied, “No way. She needs to act. Anyway, she comes by us very often. These days, she comes and plays puzzle games with us all night.” People say everything changes, but Wonder Girls’ friendship was an exception.
Q. How much do you drink?
Yeeun: I drink two bottles of Soju. Actually, it depends on the daily mood. Sometimes, I get drunk with only half a bottle.
Yubin: I don’t drink Soju, but I can drink three glasses of 500cc beer.
Hyerim: Half bottle of Soju is just right for me.
Sunmi: My max is one and a half bottle of Soju. I get drunk with that.
Q. Can you give score for this album?
Yeeun: 100 out of 100. Everyone did their best. I think we showed everything we prepared.
Yubin: 99. It’s Minus 1 for missing incorporated song.
Q. I thought you would be humble and give 50. Haha.
Sunmi: I will take care of the humble time. Haha. Like other members said, it’s a very meaningful album, so I want to give a high score. But it’s not our last album so I will give only 50. The remaining 50 will be supplemented by the next album.
Q. Band Wonder Girls was really a fresh idea. Whose idea was it?
Yubin: Everybody enjoyed playing instruments and we had more fun playing together. People from our company saw us playing together and gave good response to it. That’s when we came up with idea of making a band.
Q. Yeeun knew how to play the piano, but other members should have learned how to play instruments.
Yubin: I learned how to play guitar and piano. But drum was most interesting one. It helped me doing the rap too. I feel amazing that I can play drums now.
Q. There are some comments that you are not sufficient to make a good band yet.
Yeeun: That’s really true. We know it too. We were very disappointed because we couldn’t show even the half of what we practiced on the first showcase. It was what we used to play even with our eyes closed. But it was quite different to play on the stage from playing in the practice room. We are trying to add our experience by performing more.
Q. Can we see Wonder Girls as a band from now on?
Sunmi: It’s not like Wonder Girls is a band but it’s like that we have one more strategy. IT’s not like that we are not going to dance anymore. We will have concerns about what only Wonder Girls can do from now on.
Q. You should have heard that you became more beautiful.
Yubin: I really appreciate it. Especially I feel happy when I hear it from the female fans.
Yeeun: When we were doing retro music, we had to perm our hair and put heavy makeup to match the concept, but this time we could show our own beauty.
Q. Sexy Wonder Girls was a new concept. Especially, Sunmi’s restroom scene in the music video was amazing.
Sunmi: I never imagined that that scene would be considered sexy. But I’m quite satisfied with that scene.
Q. What do you think is the sexist scene?
Sunmi: It was really sexy when Yubin played drum while putting her lips outwards saying, ‘I feel you. Yeeun was very sexy when she was on the sun bed with ice. Hyerim and I am not there yet, but other members were really sexy.
Q. Bodysuit was a hot issue since the teaser was released.
Yeeun: We thought it really cool. We decided to wear simplest and moderate clothes because we had to play instruments and dance too. Bodysuit and aerobic suit were hot trends during the 1980s. Other clothes didn’t fit us.
Q. I heard that PD Park Jin Young gave a huge support for this album too.
Yeeun: Our teasers were released one by one every day. And he said ‘Good job’ every day. PD team was just like promotion salesmen team. They really took care of us. We really appreciate their consideration.
Q. Were there anything you felt bad about PD Park Jin Young?
Yeeun: Of course there were. But when I thought about what he said later, it was all true. To speak of something in the past, it was when Miss A released ‘Bad Girl Good Girl.’ He showed us the song too and we thought it would make a big hit. But he was thinking of giving the song to Miss A. We asked him to give the song to us but he refused it saying “You cannot dance like this.” It’s already 5 years ago, but I still remember it. But when I think of it for now, I think the song made a hit because Miss A did it.
Q. It’s a bit sad story, but some people say that the heyday of Wonder Girls is over. So this album must be very meaningful to you.
Hyerim: It was the first time that we four made performances together. It became an opportunity to develop responsibility and grow as one in aspects to skills and our friendship.
Sunmi: We think that we couldn’t be closer without this album. We delivered some ineffable energy to each other while we were playing the instruments together. We became really close. I came back from doing solo. Actually, I felt lonely while I was a solo. But after I came back as Wonder Girls, things became much more comfortable.
Yeeun: We had prepared for a long time but we had to hide it from the public. The company didn’t let us do the Instagram because any article should have to be put out in accordance to our comeback period. We were hiding from the fans. It was a long waiting time. We are so happy to meet our fans after all these hardship.
Yubin: I really love this album. We prepared all together and now I have my own instrument-drum. It’s also very meaningful to compose and make lyrics by ourselves. I feel that we grew in every aspect of skills and our friendship. I am very satisfied.
Q. Wonder Girls were always compared to Girls’ Generation even though they have different colors.
Yeeun: I appreciate that. When people talk about Girls’ Generation, they also talk about us. I feel like they are our partners now.
You should be concerned when the two groups have same comeback time.
Yubin: We are curious about their music and performances. It’s because we both do music. I think all the singers would feel the same way. We were together in the same waiting room when the Girls’ Generation came back. We talked to each other ‘Good job’, because we knew how we strived for it.
Hyerim: Girls’ Generation said that they watched our teasers first. We are cheering for each other. We also monitored their all of their 3 songs.
Sunmi: I think it’s too late to consider them as rivals. I don’t think we have sparkling competition in between.
Q. Do you look at the comments?
Yubin: We look every comment. I think we can develop from looking at the malicious comments. I don’t think that there could be no malicious comments at all. It’s a part of interest.
Yeeun: There were some really malicious comments, but now we are used to them. Haha. There was something like “Dead Girls, Girls in Coffin” and it meant that we became dead after we went to US.
Yubin: So I wrote lyrics out of it. “Dead Girls? Then bow to us. We became giants so you better watch out.” Even malicious comments helped me writing lyrics.
Q. Let’s start on debut story, it was pretty good.
Yeeun: ‘Irony’s score is not that good. We missed first prize but got much interest. When we started, there were ‘Baby Vox Re.v’ and ‘Cats’.
Yubin: When I was preparing ‘Five Girls’, I didn’t miss Wonder Girls debut.
Q. And, next album, Yubin joined, Jackpot!
Yeeun: She was luck.
Yubin: I joined and ‘Tell Me’ was really jackpot. I dreamed that giant tiger ate the moon, and bigger tiger ate the tiger. And there are children, and I told them “Follow me”. I thought they were Wonder Girls.
Q. ‘Tell me’ is one of the idol hit song. How was that?
Sunmi: Actually, I didn’t remember well. There were a lot of schedules.
Yeeun: There was a car crash, we were on MBC news. And, we heard that we got first prize with ‘Tell Me’.
Q. Then, ‘So Hot’ and ‘Nobody’ made a great hit.
Yubin: After, ‘Tell Me’ we listened ‘Nobody’ and ‘Tell Me’, we felt the hit.
Q. Then, why do you think go abroad?
Yeeun: It was JYP(Park Jin Young)’s idea, there no purpose in Korea. (Laugh)
Q. As people asked, do you regret about that?
Yeeun: Sometimes, I thought about that, I likes that time. Since we have one performance on the stage per one day, it was good in balance.
Yubin: We took a rest and learned a lot like go abroad for study.
Sunmi: Sometimes I think about that life. We traveled 10 hours after the performance. It was fun. We can cook in the bus. So, when we see a Korean market, we bought Ramen and cans of Tuna. I cannot forget that time.
Yubin: We went there for four times performances, but there was an accident. Because we had more time, we taught audience our dance. And their reaction was really good. After the stage, JYP said “We can perform more! It changed!”
Q. Yes, JYP said he wants go to America if there is 51% with Wonder Girls.
Yeeun: He always does, by the way, I thought I would be harder. I like this, but don’t know members like.
Q. Actually, it was not an exact failure. Got 76th on Billboard.
Yeeun: Yes, we felt sorry when we heard, because we thought it was a meaningful experience.
Yubin: We got 76th on Billboard that we couldn’t’ expect. At first, we got very large field of view. Actually, the experience which we had is hard to get at our age. There were a lot of things to learn. They have different system and it was helpful.
Q. You toured with famous rock band ‘Jonas Brothers’, in fact, a rock band tour is famous for dissipation.
Yeeun: They are devout Christians. Before starting a performans, a local Pastoral comes and prays. It cannot be sounder.
Yubin: We went to a roller-skating rink on Joe’s birthday, it was birthday party. We didn’t speak English well, barely told ‘Thank you, thank you!”
Q. And Hyelim joins, how was there sisters first impression?
Hyerim: Somehow, uncomfortable, and have presences. They didn’t laugh well.Yubin: We all sad for Sunmi, also it’s good to join Hyerim, but we felt a bit down.
Hyerim: Then, there was an accident, we went to Hainan, I underwent harsh hazing. They wanted to enjoy Jet Ski, but I don’t like active sports. I can’t talked about this, finally was on the Jet ski with a coach. Then he was excited himself and ran very fast, stopped, and ran. And my nose was bumped against the engine. I bled at my nose. People took my pictures when I returned, and I bled at my nose again. It was a unintended hazing.
Yeeun: Since then, there’s no being awkward, I thought how uncomfortable she was. I feel like she’s my real sister.
Q. Since then, ‘2 different tears’ in Korean, shot a film and Wonder Girls tour in America, and stopped.
Yeeun: It’s no intention. We felt that we need to focus on Korean field, Sunye was planning to marry.
Q. Sohee left the group for acting.
Yeeun: Sohee always wanted to act. But due to the tour in America, she gave up parts of her dream. Now I think she decided to focus on her dream.
Q. What was it like to see them leave the group?
Hyerim: We wanted to stay together. But they had dreams that they wanted to achieve. We can’t force them to do something.
Yeeun: They did their best. And we talked together. They said that it is the end of their singing career as the Wonder Girls. Sunye had a dream of missionary works and Sohee wanted to be an actress. Since we know much about them, we could make a decision.
Q. Sunmi had a career break and came back as solo.
Sunmi: I felt great. My name was always on the site’s main. It was fun to read the articles about me.
Q. Sunmi as a solo is quite competitive, but she came back as group.
Sunmi: When preparing for my solo, I always talked with the members and Park Jin Young PD. I always said that my final goal is Wonder Girls. He said that my solo will be a path to build my strength as a singer. Wonder Girls is my hometown that I had to go back. I thank the members for waiting for me.
Yeeun: We thank her. She had her career as a solo. She did not go to her solo events to practice playing the bass. We told her that she is mad, and that she does not have to do all that.
Q. Several days ago, I heard Sunye is pregnant.
Yeeun: We knew about that. We texted each other. She said that she saw the articles.
Sunmi: She told us in the chatting room of our group. We text her congrats!

Q. I heard that you guys recently started living together.
Yubin: It was natural. I first lived with Ye Eun. Then Hyelim joined and Sunmi started to bring her living supplies. Since last year, we just live together.
Q. In Girl Group history, Wonder Girls is one of the long running groups with Girls’ Generation and Kara.
Yeeun: Girls’ Generation and we both have responsibility. The three groups have been working for 9 years, and we all have some sort of responsibilities. We want to show that we can persist. We cannot say when, but we will do the best we can.
Q. Yubin has started a new challenge. She decided to appear on ‘Unpretty Rapstar Vol. 2’
Yubin: I thought about this a lot. I even hesitated after the meeting. But the members gave me courage. The only private activity that I have done was the drama ‘The virus’. They supported me since they know how much I like rap.
Yeeun: She has a desire of winning and is strong under pressure. She is fit in being on stage so I think it is a great chance to show herself.
Yubin: It is good to meet with other rappers. I think it is a precious chance to meet under rappers. The stress is immense. It’s like if I’m dieting.
Hyerim: Last time I stepped out of the elevator and she was lowering her head, holding the wall. I could see that she is really having a hard time.
Q. You guys seem to be very close to each other.
Yubin: We are like more than a family. They are like sisters to me. Do I look like a sister? Ha ha. We know from our eyes what we are saying.
Sunmi: They give me consolation and energy.
Yeeun: Sohee comes by to our house often. We play puzzles all night.
Hyerim: One time I opened the house door and saw Sunmi and Sohee playing puzzles. Ha ha.

Hyerim: Then, there was an accident, we went to Hainan, I underwent harsh hazing. They wanted to enjoy Jet Ski, but I don’t like active sports. I can’t talked about this, finally was on the Jet ski with a coach. Then he was excited himself and ran very fast, stopped, and ran. And my nose was bumped against the engine. I bled at my nose. People took my pictures when I returned, and I bled at my nose again. It was a unintended hazing.
Yeeun: Since then, there’s no being awkward, I thought how uncomfortable she was. I feel like she’s my real sister.
Q. Since then, ‘2 different tears’ in Korean, shot a film and Wonder Girls tour in America, and stopped.
Yeeun: It’s no intention. We felt that we need to focus on Korean field, Sunye was planning to marry.
Q. Sohee left the group for acting.
Yeeun: Sohee always wanted to act. But due to the tour in America, she gave up parts of her dream. Now I think she decided to focus on her dream.
Q. What was it like to see them leave the group?
Hyerim: We wanted to stay together. But they had dreams that they wanted to achieve. We can’t force them to do something.
Yeeun: They did their best. And we talked together. They said that it is the end of their singing career as the Wonder Girls. Sunye had a dream of missionary works and Sohee wanted to be an actress. Since we know much about them, we could make a decision.
Q. Sunmi had a career break and came back as solo.
Sunmi: I felt great. My name was always on the site’s main. It was fun to read the articles about me.
Q. Sunmi as a solo is quite competitive, but she came back as group.
Sunmi: When preparing for my solo, I always talked with the members and Park Jin Young PD. I always said that my final goal is Wonder Girls. He said that my solo will be a path to build my strength as a singer. Wonder Girls is my hometown that I had to go back. I thank the members for waiting for me.
Yeeun: We thank her. She had her career as a solo. She did not go to her solo events to practice playing the bass. We told her that she is mad, and that she does not have to do all that.
Q. Several days ago, I heard Sunye is pregnant.
Yeeun: We knew about that. We texted each other. She said that she saw the articles.
Sunmi: She told us in the chatting room of our group. We text her congrats!
Q. Do the members talk about marriage?
Yeeun: We talk about when we will marry. Although it always changes.
Yubin: For now, work is more fun.
Q. I heard that you guys recently started living together.
Yubin: It was natural. I first lived with Ye Eun. Then Hyelim joined and Sunmi started to bring her living supplies. Since last year, we just live together.
Q. In Girl Group history, Wonder Girls is one of the long running groups with Girls’ Generation and Kara.
Yeeun: Girls’ Generation and we both have responsibility. The three groups have been working for 9 years, and we all have some sort of responsibilities. We want to show that we can persist. We cannot say when, but we will do the best we can.
Q. Yubin has started a new challenge. She decided to appear on ‘Unpretty Rapstar Vol. 2’
Yubin: I thought about this a lot. I even hesitated after the meeting. But the members gave me courage. The only private activity that I have done was the drama ‘The virus’. They supported me since they know how much I like rap.
Yeeun: She has a desire of winning and is strong under pressure. She is fit in being on stage so I think it is a great chance to show herself.
Yubin: It is good to meet with other rappers. I think it is a precious chance to meet under rappers. The stress is immense. It’s like if I’m dieting.
Hyerim: Last time I stepped out of the elevator and she was lowering her head, holding the wall. I could see that she is really having a hard time.
Q. You guys seem to be very close to each other.
Yubin: We are like more than a family. They are like sisters to me. Do I look like a sister? Ha ha. We know from our eyes what we are saying.
Sunmi: They give me consolation and energy.
Yeeun: Sohee comes by to our house often. We play puzzles all night.
Hyerim: One time I opened the house door and saw Sunmi and Sohee playing puzzles. Ha ha.
Yeeun: We can’t see Sunye often since she has to take care of her baby. But we always talk. We spent our days that we had to rely on each other. We can’t ignore that.
Q. Your fans are known that they are very generous. Any words for the fans?
Hyerim: At first, I must have been unfamiliar to you guys. But thank you all for accepting me and cheering for me. Thank you for calling my name when cheering for our stage. It really touched my heart. During the resting phase, I could not even trust my self. But you guys waited for us. Thank you for the support.
Yeeun: They are like Buddhist saint. They are riding a rollercoaster with us. We really thank them. We are like boys, very brusque unlike other girl groups. Although we can’t express much, we love you all.
Yubin: Looking at the eyes of our fans is like looking at the members. It is just great that they waited for us. We keep trying to offer them better music. Just the four of us aren’t Wonder Girls. The fans are, too. I hope that they will be proud of being our fans.
Sunmi: I had to hide my process of coming back as Wonder Girls. I really wanted to tell the fans. ‘I will come back to Wonder Girls!’. Just as they wait for us in the same stance, we also want to show them good music in our stance.

Also they should do follow up promotions for Reboot, i would die for a video or sth for One Black Night, Rewind and Candle. Also Baby don't play. Ugh such a good record
