KBS reports on SM Entertainment’s habitual lip-sync performances

While covering Girls’ Generation’s recent lip-syncing controversy, KBS News reported on SM Entertainment‘s penchant for lip-syncing during live performances, featuring EXO in particular.

Girls’ Generation has been recently criticized for their alleged lip-sync performance despite their status as 9th year veterans in the K-pop industry. While covering this issue on its news program, KBS has brought up other artists in SM Entertainment who have also been accused of lip-syncing. They went on to show that SM Entertainment’s artists have a habit of lip-syncing performances despite the disappointment fans have expressed in the past. Among other groups, EXO was featured showing their controversy last year that disappointed many fans.

[ +411 / -149] It was when Kris Wu-Yifan pigeon flew away to China a week before the concert. They slept 2 hours a day and practiced 20 hours a day. They even recorded for a week and EXO-M also had to perform stages in China. I think it was successful regarding the fact that they didn’t faint. They started singing live during the concerts in China right after. But I admit it is their fault for not singing live in many concerts in songs such as ‘Call Me Baby,’ ‘Love Me Right’ and other songs. But they have recently been doing performances live. Even the one in Japan recently.

as much as i'm sure his leaving at that critical time affected their stamina etc, why are they acting as if kris had a lot of lines/parts to work around lol + the fact that they pm lipsynched 80% of their performances between 2013-2014 way before kris left and also didn't they spend the majority of tlp lipsynching?

most of sm's concerts are lipsynched so exo shouldn't be blamed mostly for it and exo have spent most of their concerts/promo live this time around so idky kbs is bringing it up now lol

EXO has improved their lives quite a bit, particularly Kyungsoo and Xiumin.They'll get better the more they do it.

Ah ok, I defended SNSD earlier since I thought it was just a one off but guess not. Bad thing to make a habit of. There's no excuse; especially not intense choreography. There are plenty of other groups who are dancing harder choreos and still singing live. Doesn't reflect very well on such a veteran group in SNSD's case. Also doesn't really motivate them much on stage when some of the members could use some.

i think i remember boa lipsyncing only one and there were articles giving her shit for it, but people defended it by the hard choreo + the fact that she's been in the game so long so everyone knows she can actually sing. but on the other hand, snsd's party choreo isn't intense + every member sings about 10-15 seconds. i miss when they were still performing genie & gee and looked like they were into it.

Exactly! Music show lipsynching sounds fair to me, especially if the artists want to preserve their voices and not get tired from their insane schedules. But lip-synched concerts are such a waste of money and are downright disappointing. You want the artists to actually be singing for the money you paid to be there :/

and lbr it's because of crazy dance routines and the possible lack of sleep that will leave them breathless and tired that performances aren't completely live and not that they lack of talent. i'm not sure about concerts since i don't watch fancams or streams, but don't they sing songs without choreos?
when it comes to performances on music shows i think they'd rather put on a good show than anything. still they can't win either way because then you have people making fun of them when they do actually sing live and mess up, like with the recent sehun wank ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sm has been doing this for years. They will record something that sounds live but it's actually a backtrack and it was so obvious during Mr. Mr. because every adlib sounded the same for every performance
I don't understand why SNSD can't sing live, they've definitely done it in the past and they aren't exo-level bad so...

Ikr! I've noticed it for years, even with DBSK, it's the same thing.

I remember I once commented that you could totally see Taeyeon or Tiffany lip syncing (around Mr Mr era) and everyone told me I was blind and deaf, they weren't BUT I could totally tell that, they sounded the same every single performance.

That goes for DBSK too, and it's freaking obvious because of Changmin, he sounded the same in every performance (Spellbound era, I think...), and that never happens when he's singing live.

Honestly, I go to pop concerts more to have a good time / be entertained than to be serenaded live, but I can understand how some people are dissatisfied with concerts that are mostly lip-synched.

I understand that you have a different opinion, but as for myself, I personally wouldn't pay so much money to see people lipsynch at a concert. When I go to a live concert, I expect live, and that's usually what I get. It's got a different feel than when the artist is just moving their mouth at the right moment while faking pouring their soul in the song. I don't know, my favs usually sound better and more lively live than on the CD. lol When I see people comment that exo performed well on a music show when they lip-synched, it just doesn't make sense to me, because when you perform a song, it usually includes singing, and not just dancing. Otherwise, you're just a dance group, which doesn't require moving your lips anytime. I find it pretty pointless and ill-invested money otherwise. When I see that only seven songs are sung live out of 31, that's not even just insulting and taking people for stupid cash cows, that's a scam.

personally i don't mind idols lipsyncing unless its a group i stan.the more i like the song the more i wanna listen to it live.and it makes me happy seeing my faves doing well.idk its probably bc the first group i ever stanned was tvxq were the live perfs were better than the recorded ver of the song.

I don't understand how people can say a lip-synched stage was a "good performance". I mean, if you're an idol group, the singing is still (the major) part of the performance, since... you know... you're performing a song (and not just a dance). Which usually includes singing.
