Preface: For this interview, the reporter went on Twitter and collected questions from Korean fans to ask Nine Muses. Hence, there may be some references that are slightly more specific to Korean fandom and not as well known to international fans; these points will be explained with notes.
Q. You were in a hiatus period for over a year; this was probably a time filled with nervousness and worry. “Drama” is lasting for a long time on the charts, you were #1 candidates on music shows, and you had the best ranking yet on music shows. How do you feel these days?
Erine: Fans like (the song) so I feel really good.
Hyemi: (The song) did well on charts because of our fans. Aside from the fact that we’re doing well (with Drama), none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for our fans. I’m really really thankful. But because it’s the first time (we’ve done this well), I still haven’t felt the reality of the situation. I can’t feel nervousness or anything like that.
Q. What will you do if you get #1 on a music show?
Kyungri: All the members will perform with the comma fringe hairstyle for a Drama stage.
Minha: How about going somewhere to eat and doing the Drama chorus dance together?
Q. Last year, Kyungri and Sojin did unit promotions with ZE:A’s Kevin as Nasty Nasty. Do any of you want to be in a unit with any of the members?
Hyemi: I want to try something cute with PyoPakBap (T/N: Common fandom nickname for the trio of Pyo Hyemi, Park Kyungri, Park Minha). I also want to sing with Hyuna-unnie, Erine-unnie, and Keumjo. Not R&B but something more like indie style. All 3 have voices that are polar opposites so I think individual personalities would come out well.
Hyuna: During the “Drama” showcase, Erine, Hyemi, Keumjo and I sang together, didn't we? I think it’d be good to try a stage like that again. Back then, we were nervous but we were able to lean on each other for support and we ended up doing the stage easily. Also, if you want something that’s really sexy, then I think Kyungri, Erine and I could show you that.
Hyemi: What about me?
Minha: Erine-unnie is well-rounded (T/N: Good at everything)
Sungah: I want to do hip hop with Erine-unnie and Sojin
Sojin: The genre of dance I’ve danced my whole life is girl’s hip hop so I want to do a hip hop performance with Erine-unnie and Sungah-unnie.
Minha: I want to do an innocent concept with PyoPakBap!
Kyungri: A cutie sexy concept with PyoPakBap! Like something we showed at the army.
Q. The member in Nine Muses who’s the greatest at variety, Erine. If you could create your own variety show, what kind would you make?
Erine: A couple pairing program. Something like “Match made In Heaven” or “War of Roses”. To be honest.. I’m lonely. I want to date but I’ll just have to live vicariously. Through a program that creates couples, the best man is mine!
All: Hahahaha
Q. On broadcast shows, Erine is able to lift up the mood and show off personal talents. At home, do you do high kicks on your bed before falling asleep? (T/N: The question literally says "high kicks", but probably refers to "blanket kick" (이불킥), i.e. you lie in bed trying to fall asleep at night, but think of something silly you did in the daytime and get so embarrassed you kick all your blankets off.)
Erine: I don’t do high kicks. I’m upset because I can’t show more (of my individual talents). Rather than making a sacrifice (to my image), I just have fun. People who watch it obviously enjoy it, but I think that the person doing the talent should have fun so the people who watch can enjoy it. I want to make every moment fun and exciting. I don’t try to be funny on purpose.
Q. How was the “playing with fire” dance that you do with Kyungri made? (T/N: Referring to Erine and Kyungri dancing together during Dolls)
Erine: Because the number of members decreased, the way we do our choreography became a bit messy. I was wondering what to do then when I saw Kyungri while walking by, I noticed that her hips were really pretty. I want to touch those hips!! I want to dance with that child!! I suddenly got a feeling and ran to Kyungri. At first, Kyungri was embarrassed but after that, she did well. Videos (of this dance) became a hot topic.
Kyungri: We gained a lot of fans because of that!
Q. Ever since “Dolls”, Erine’s rap voice and skill changed. Is rapper Erine the result of hard work or were you just born with it?
Erine: The good thing is, I think I was born with my vocal color. Even if I learn the same thing as someone else, because of my vocal color, it looks like I’m really good at it. People who rap said this is really important. Putting skill aside, because I was born with this voice, I think it became a positive for me. I’m working hard. I don’t have a rapper role model. If I had one, I’d be too focused on trying to imitate them so it wouldn’t benefit me in the end. I’m trying to find my own color.
Q. Nine Muses communicates with fans a lot via SNS. While communicating with fans via SNS, were there any memorable events?
Sungah: When fans draw a cartoon or make something that’s one of a kind just for me, it’s memorable
Minha: When they say that they’re spending their day excitedly because we exist
Erine: On our phones, we have more fantaken pictures than we do of our own selcas. All of our KakaoTalk photos are fantaken photos as well.
Hyemi: Every morning, (fans) say “Did you sleep well?” “Did you eat” or even a simple hello. It must be hard to do this everyday, thank you
Hyuna: When they send things related to animals! When I wake up in the morning and look (at the things that the fans sent me), it heals me. Also I was surprised at them tweeting me during 'Hyuna time'. Thinking of the fact that they set an alarm just to send that, it’s really amazing. (T/N: Hyuna's birthday is 1/19, and so 'Hyuna time' is 1:19am/pm every day in KST.)
Q. Do Sojin and Keumjo not use SNS?
Sojin: Not yet.. I originally don't use it a lot
Keumjo: I deleted all of my SNS accounts during my trainee period. Nowadays I just look around.
Q. Nine Muses in particular has a lot of female fans. Is there a reason for this?
Sungah: Our easy-going / free spirited personality?
Kyungri: I heard this recently; apparently we look cool even though we’re female idols. Apparently we even have the same aura as male idols!
Q. Say something to your 2 million female fans (T/N: It's a running joke in Korean fandom that Nine Muses has 2 million fans, and that they are all female.)
Hyuna: Continue to come into our fandom. Bring your friends.
Minha: Come in, bring your friends, come together!
Q. In “Drama”, Sungah transformed into a rapper. For the next album, do you want to be a rapper or a vocalist?
Sungah: If you tell me to do it… honestly I don’t really know. Honestly I want Erine-unnie to rap alone. I want people to think of Erine’s (vocal) color when they think of Nine Muses.
Q. Nine Muses has a lot of different choreography. Which member learns the dances the fastest?
Hyuna: Hyemi! Her learning ability is really quick.
Hyemi: I learn fast, but my dancing skills are lacking. Hahaha.
Hyemi: Hyemi remembers (the dances) well
Q. Then who learns dances the slowest?
Minha: Why are you looking at me?
Erine: Minha has become faster (at learning dances)
Hyuna: Everyone is around the same level
Erine: I’m really sad. If you teach me the dance, I can do it well but I can’t do freestyle dancing.

Q. While preparing for the album and picking the concept, what worries you the most?
Hyuna: By default, our body!! Instead of exercising for the sake of having a skinny body, we exercise a lot to have a body that handle our rigorous schedules. Concept wise, rather than choosing one that fits us well, we think about how we’re going to portray the concept to make it look good + a concept that will fit the title track well. For example, we wore wigs for the album jacket this time to show hair colors different from the ones we usually have.
Q. I heard there are members who are interested in song writing/composing. Any news on self composed songs?
Hyuna: We’re slowly starting to move in that direction. Kyungri and Hyemi are slowly starting to participate more (in music writing). Last year while releasing my essay “I Love You Everyday”, I also created an OST for the book. I think I made a lot of music around that time. The songs that I’ve made don’t fit the existing Nine Muses color but I don’t think it’d be bad to show another side of Nine Muses so I’m working on polishing those songs when I have time. Right now, I’m in a state where I’ve stopped working on those songs to focus on Drama.
Q. Hyuna, when fans supporting you by saying you’re 29 months old (instead of 29 years old), how does that make you feel?
Hyuna: It makes me think. Would it be better if I was younger.. I live life without thinking about my age. Ever since I was a kid, I always thought that age was a man made number in respect to the Earth’s rotation and revolutions. I used to think that (calling me 29 months old) was a way of making me cute and eliminating responsibility but nowadays I think that fans might not like the fact that I’m old / it could be worrisome. Because a lot of girl group members are young, it does worry me a bit.
Q. Hyuna has a lot of past experiences to the point where your nickname is “Rich In The Past”. Which is the most memorable?
Hyuna: Every moment is memorable. I live life to the fullest. Out of all of my memories, I think of the scene where I filmed a music video with Lee Junki oppa. I learned what it’s like to be a professional. Junki-oppa didn’t sleep for 3 days and just danced ; he wasn’t tired at all. Back then, I had to wear a mesh outfit and I didn’t want to be noticeable so I couldn’t go to the bathroom and I whined to my manager-unnie. While looking at Junki-opaa, I learnt that it’s not easy to be a celebrity, there are rules of being a professional, and that you should love yourself.
Q. What’s “Pyo At The Very End"?
Hyemi: Ah, isn’t that from a appearance ranking we did on a radio show?
Minha: On Shindong oppa’s radio show we were ranking each other in terms of visuals and he asked “Where does Hyemi stand” so I said “She’s at the end” and this turned into “Pyo At The Very End”
Q. Then Hyemi, do you agree with “Pyo At The Very End"?
Hyemi: Absolutely not
Q. Hyemi has always wanted to be in a musical, what role do you want to play? Also I heard that you’re intelligent, what’s the secret to this? (T/N: There is an old interview that mentions Hyemi's IQ as especially high, and various anecdotes from fanaccounts that mention Hyemi's wittiness.)
Hyemi: I want to try the role of “Glinda” from the musical “Wicked”. She’s cute and lovely. Usually the sub character is the villain but there’s nothing like that (with Glinda), she’s lovely. I think that character would match well with me. As for being smart; I have a lot of interest in miscellaneous things so I surf the internet all day. You can gain knowledge by doing that.
Q. Are you going to go on a picnic with your fans this year too? What about a concert!
Hyuna: Around the time when we release our second album, whether it’s a picnic or a mini concert, I want to do it. There’s the problem of time and we have to talk it out with our company, but we’re looking forward to those days.
Q. Nine Muses is a group that’s perceived as “Strong unnies” or “Scary unnies”. But if you get to know them, they’re a cute group! It seems like the time has come where you have to move a little closer to the general public. What kind of thoughts do you have?
Hyemi: When we do interviews or shoot reality shows, I try to exaggerate my aegyo even though I normally don’t have a lot of aegyo.
Hyuna: Aside from music shows, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to show ourself to the public. That’s why we try to communicate a lot via SNS. Rather than just uploading selcas, we upload pictures of us playing with each other. A scene where I longingly called Minha’s name is just one of those scenes. It’s a worry of how far that’ll reach (to the public) but I think that’s the best we can do.
Q. While being part of Nine Muses, were there moments where you wanted to quit? What made you stay?
All: The members!
Hyuna: Last year was a really difficult time period but I was able to get through it because of the members. We’re together right now because we held each other hands. The members really became a source of strength.
Erine: The feeling of “thankfulness” really held us together. Thank you for being by my side.

Q. Maknae Keumjo, please rank Nine Muses in terms of leadership/authority
Keumjo: Ah... um... first off Hyuna-unnie acts like an unnie and leads a lot. Second is Erine-unnie. Third is Hyemi-unnie, fourth is Minha-unnie, fifth is Kyungri-unnie... Ah then Sungah-unnie is last? Sojin-unnie and I are on the same level. The reason Sungah-unnie is the lowest is because.. um
Hyuna: That’s probably because Sungah is soft towards her
Keumjo: Yes, that’s right!
Q. I heard that Hyuna’s drinking limit increased while she was resting, how about the other members?
Hyuna: It decreased again. It really decreased. A while back I drank a can of beer and the next day was really difficult.
Kyungri: When I was at my prime I drank 7 bottles of beer! Recently I had some trouble after drinking 1 bottle.
Q. Among the members, who drinks alcohol the best?
Members: Minha is a bit of a strong drinker
Minha: I don’t drink that much these days.. Rather than the fact that I’m a strong drinker, I just try hard to go back to a sober state. Around 2 bottles of soju?
Q. Who has the most interesting drunk habits?
Minha: I don’t drink to the point where I show drunk habits so..
Hyuna: Minha can’t even take care of herself properly but she takes care of other people
Hyemi: While she wobbles around, she says things like “Unnie, don’t forget your bag~”
Erine: She also laughs a lot
Minha: I think that you shouldn’t lose things
Hyemi: Also, whatever she’s hooked on that day, she puts all of her attention on it. There was at a time when we were starting to play a game on our phones; it was a game where you cultivated rice. While we were spending time together (after drinking), the rice had to be gathered but this child was drunk and she started saying “The rice is going to rot, I have to gather my rice”. Haha
Q. Sojin’s random dancing on Mnet “YamanTV” was really funny. In reality, does Sojin have a bright personality like that random dance?
Sojin: In reality, I hear that I’m passive. When I’m excited I’m like that
Hyemi: Sojin’s appearance right now is not even 1/20th of her true appearance. Out of all the friends I play with, she’s the most bizarre and free.
Hyuna: You can see that appearance once in a while; I want everyone to see it as soon as possible. But I heard that Sojin cries a lot because of Keumjo
Q. Ah that’s right. You two live together. Do you match well?
Sojin, Keumjo: Yes!
Hyuna: Don’t lie! Tell us about the things where you two don’t get along well
Sojin: Ah, I have trypophobia, get goosebumps easily, and I get scared easily. But Keumjo likes to scare me. She had already scared me 3 times and the 4th time, I cried. There was an incident where I bought shampoo on my way home, but Keumjo scared me out of nowhere so I threw the shampoo and it exploded everywhere.
Q. Haha. Keumjo, how’s Sojin?
Keumjo: I like everything about her but this is something I learned after living with her; Sojin will wake up in the middle of her sleep and make strange noises. She talks about things that happened in her dream. She suddenly woke up and said “Keumjo, did you eat a banana?” Hahaha.
Q. Nine Muses doesn’t live in dorms. If you lived in dorms, is there a member you want to be roommates with?
Minha: I think it’s best for everyone to live on their own.
All: Hahaha.
Minha: For me, I'd pick Hyemi. We used the same room at a hotel for a long time and we have our own pattern. We ended up making our own rules (for the room) so the room was tidy even if we didn’t say anything to each other. But I heard Hyemi doesn’t clean her house these days..
Hyuna: I want to be alone. Because I’ve been living alone, if I see something messy I have to clean it up right away
Minha: I think it’d be faster to pick the member you don’t want to be roommates with
Kyungri: Hyemi. It feels like I’ll match well with her. And she cleans things up well since she’s been living alone
Sungah: I’ve been living with my family so I want to try living alone.
Q. What’s Nine Muses’ favorite song to sing at the karaoke bar?
Hyemi: When I go with friends, I always sing our songs. But our song is meant to be sung by 8-9 people so singing it alone is hard. Because it’s my song, I want to sing it well but the notes are higher than expected and because I have to rap too, it’s difficult. Out of all our songs, I sing “Wild” the best.
Sojin: Like Hyemi-unnie said, Jewelry’s Semi is in that group (of friends) so we sing Nine Muses songs and Jewelry songs. We have a decorative finish by singing Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby.
Hyemi: We have fun as if we’re playing at our own concert.
Keumjo: When I go with friends, I sing songs that my friends ask me to sing. Because I sing the songs that I like in the practice room.
Sungah: Have you seen the cost of events? It depends on my mood. There are times when I sing ballads, I also like to sing Yoon Mirae-sunbaenim’s songs a lot
Erine: I like to sing Space A’s “A Sexy Man”
Minha: I don’t go to the karaoke bar often so I have to think about it.
Kyungri: I like to sing “Bad Guy”. I like pouring out emotions
Hyuna: When I go to the karaoke, I sing songs from all genres. These days there are a lot of indie songs that I want to sing but it’s regretful that I can’t sing them at the karaoke bar. I guess the songs aren’t registered there…

Q. I heard there are members who are interested in song writing/composing. Any news on self composed songs?
Hyuna: We’re slowly starting to move in that direction. Kyungri and Hyemi are slowly starting to participate more (in music writing). Last year while releasing my essay “I Love You Everyday”, I also created an OST for the book. I think I made a lot of music around that time. The songs that I’ve made don’t fit the existing Nine Muses color but I don’t think it’d be bad to show another side of Nine Muses so I’m working on polishing those songs when I have time. Right now, I’m in a state where I’ve stopped working on those songs to focus on Drama.
Q. Hyuna, when fans supporting you by saying you’re 29 months old (instead of 29 years old), how does that make you feel?
Hyuna: It makes me think. Would it be better if I was younger.. I live life without thinking about my age. Ever since I was a kid, I always thought that age was a man made number in respect to the Earth’s rotation and revolutions. I used to think that (calling me 29 months old) was a way of making me cute and eliminating responsibility but nowadays I think that fans might not like the fact that I’m old / it could be worrisome. Because a lot of girl group members are young, it does worry me a bit.
Q. Hyuna has a lot of past experiences to the point where your nickname is “Rich In The Past”. Which is the most memorable?
Hyuna: Every moment is memorable. I live life to the fullest. Out of all of my memories, I think of the scene where I filmed a music video with Lee Junki oppa. I learned what it’s like to be a professional. Junki-oppa didn’t sleep for 3 days and just danced ; he wasn’t tired at all. Back then, I had to wear a mesh outfit and I didn’t want to be noticeable so I couldn’t go to the bathroom and I whined to my manager-unnie. While looking at Junki-opaa, I learnt that it’s not easy to be a celebrity, there are rules of being a professional, and that you should love yourself.
Q. What’s “Pyo At The Very End"?
Hyemi: Ah, isn’t that from a appearance ranking we did on a radio show?
Minha: On Shindong oppa’s radio show we were ranking each other in terms of visuals and he asked “Where does Hyemi stand” so I said “She’s at the end” and this turned into “Pyo At The Very End”
Q. Then Hyemi, do you agree with “Pyo At The Very End"?
Hyemi: Absolutely not
Q. Hyemi has always wanted to be in a musical, what role do you want to play? Also I heard that you’re intelligent, what’s the secret to this? (T/N: There is an old interview that mentions Hyemi's IQ as especially high, and various anecdotes from fanaccounts that mention Hyemi's wittiness.)
Hyemi: I want to try the role of “Glinda” from the musical “Wicked”. She’s cute and lovely. Usually the sub character is the villain but there’s nothing like that (with Glinda), she’s lovely. I think that character would match well with me. As for being smart; I have a lot of interest in miscellaneous things so I surf the internet all day. You can gain knowledge by doing that.
Q. Are you going to go on a picnic with your fans this year too? What about a concert!
Hyuna: Around the time when we release our second album, whether it’s a picnic or a mini concert, I want to do it. There’s the problem of time and we have to talk it out with our company, but we’re looking forward to those days.
Q. Nine Muses is a group that’s perceived as “Strong unnies” or “Scary unnies”. But if you get to know them, they’re a cute group! It seems like the time has come where you have to move a little closer to the general public. What kind of thoughts do you have?
Hyemi: When we do interviews or shoot reality shows, I try to exaggerate my aegyo even though I normally don’t have a lot of aegyo.
Hyuna: Aside from music shows, we don’t have a lot of opportunities to show ourself to the public. That’s why we try to communicate a lot via SNS. Rather than just uploading selcas, we upload pictures of us playing with each other. A scene where I longingly called Minha’s name is just one of those scenes. It’s a worry of how far that’ll reach (to the public) but I think that’s the best we can do.
Q. While being part of Nine Muses, were there moments where you wanted to quit? What made you stay?
All: The members!
Hyuna: Last year was a really difficult time period but I was able to get through it because of the members. We’re together right now because we held each other hands. The members really became a source of strength.
Erine: The feeling of “thankfulness” really held us together. Thank you for being by my side.

Q. Maknae Keumjo, please rank Nine Muses in terms of leadership/authority
Keumjo: Ah... um... first off Hyuna-unnie acts like an unnie and leads a lot. Second is Erine-unnie. Third is Hyemi-unnie, fourth is Minha-unnie, fifth is Kyungri-unnie... Ah then Sungah-unnie is last? Sojin-unnie and I are on the same level. The reason Sungah-unnie is the lowest is because.. um
Hyuna: That’s probably because Sungah is soft towards her
Keumjo: Yes, that’s right!
Q. I heard that Hyuna’s drinking limit increased while she was resting, how about the other members?
Hyuna: It decreased again. It really decreased. A while back I drank a can of beer and the next day was really difficult.
Kyungri: When I was at my prime I drank 7 bottles of beer! Recently I had some trouble after drinking 1 bottle.
Q. Among the members, who drinks alcohol the best?
Members: Minha is a bit of a strong drinker
Minha: I don’t drink that much these days.. Rather than the fact that I’m a strong drinker, I just try hard to go back to a sober state. Around 2 bottles of soju?
Q. Who has the most interesting drunk habits?
Minha: I don’t drink to the point where I show drunk habits so..
Hyuna: Minha can’t even take care of herself properly but she takes care of other people
Hyemi: While she wobbles around, she says things like “Unnie, don’t forget your bag~”
Erine: She also laughs a lot
Minha: I think that you shouldn’t lose things
Hyemi: Also, whatever she’s hooked on that day, she puts all of her attention on it. There was at a time when we were starting to play a game on our phones; it was a game where you cultivated rice. While we were spending time together (after drinking), the rice had to be gathered but this child was drunk and she started saying “The rice is going to rot, I have to gather my rice”. Haha
Q. Sojin’s random dancing on Mnet “YamanTV” was really funny. In reality, does Sojin have a bright personality like that random dance?
Sojin: In reality, I hear that I’m passive. When I’m excited I’m like that
Hyemi: Sojin’s appearance right now is not even 1/20th of her true appearance. Out of all the friends I play with, she’s the most bizarre and free.
Hyuna: You can see that appearance once in a while; I want everyone to see it as soon as possible. But I heard that Sojin cries a lot because of Keumjo
Q. Ah that’s right. You two live together. Do you match well?
Sojin, Keumjo: Yes!
Hyuna: Don’t lie! Tell us about the things where you two don’t get along well
Sojin: Ah, I have trypophobia, get goosebumps easily, and I get scared easily. But Keumjo likes to scare me. She had already scared me 3 times and the 4th time, I cried. There was an incident where I bought shampoo on my way home, but Keumjo scared me out of nowhere so I threw the shampoo and it exploded everywhere.
Q. Haha. Keumjo, how’s Sojin?
Keumjo: I like everything about her but this is something I learned after living with her; Sojin will wake up in the middle of her sleep and make strange noises. She talks about things that happened in her dream. She suddenly woke up and said “Keumjo, did you eat a banana?” Hahaha.
Q. Nine Muses doesn’t live in dorms. If you lived in dorms, is there a member you want to be roommates with?
Minha: I think it’s best for everyone to live on their own.
All: Hahaha.
Minha: For me, I'd pick Hyemi. We used the same room at a hotel for a long time and we have our own pattern. We ended up making our own rules (for the room) so the room was tidy even if we didn’t say anything to each other. But I heard Hyemi doesn’t clean her house these days..
Hyuna: I want to be alone. Because I’ve been living alone, if I see something messy I have to clean it up right away
Minha: I think it’d be faster to pick the member you don’t want to be roommates with
Kyungri: Hyemi. It feels like I’ll match well with her. And she cleans things up well since she’s been living alone
Sungah: I’ve been living with my family so I want to try living alone.
Q. What’s Nine Muses’ favorite song to sing at the karaoke bar?
Hyemi: When I go with friends, I always sing our songs. But our song is meant to be sung by 8-9 people so singing it alone is hard. Because it’s my song, I want to sing it well but the notes are higher than expected and because I have to rap too, it’s difficult. Out of all our songs, I sing “Wild” the best.
Sojin: Like Hyemi-unnie said, Jewelry’s Semi is in that group (of friends) so we sing Nine Muses songs and Jewelry songs. We have a decorative finish by singing Big Bang’s Fantastic Baby.
Hyemi: We have fun as if we’re playing at our own concert.
Keumjo: When I go with friends, I sing songs that my friends ask me to sing. Because I sing the songs that I like in the practice room.
Sungah: Have you seen the cost of events? It depends on my mood. There are times when I sing ballads, I also like to sing Yoon Mirae-sunbaenim’s songs a lot
Erine: I like to sing Space A’s “A Sexy Man”
Minha: I don’t go to the karaoke bar often so I have to think about it.
Kyungri: I like to sing “Bad Guy”. I like pouring out emotions
Hyuna: When I go to the karaoke, I sing songs from all genres. These days there are a lot of indie songs that I want to sing but it’s regretful that I can’t sing them at the karaoke bar. I guess the songs aren’t registered there…
