Article: From the attitude controversies of Girl's Day and Taeyeon, what exactly is the relationship between the public and the star?

1. [+1,151, -263] Male idols can get into all sorts of scandals involving marijuana, drunk driving, gambling, and plagiarism and still come out on TV just fine... but female idols get hated to death just for making the wrong facial expression or saying the wrong word. It's ridiculous.

2. [+989, -293] The industry has always been excessively favorable to men. Take for example when 2PM rips their clothes off, they get praised for being beastly idols and having 'nipple parties' but when Girl's Day or SISTAR comes out in short skirts, they get called prostitutes.

Even with this scandal, Sojin and Choigoon did a dumpling skit but only Sojin, the woman, got the hate. No one said a thing about Choigoon. The dumplings were merely a weapon used to hate against Sojin.

When Song Minho sang lyrics demanding women to spread their legs, fans shielded him saying he apologized and enough's enough. But when Girl's Day apologized, people still ragged on them saying their facial expressions didn't look sincere and that an apology wouldn't be enough.

When Nichkhun got into a drunk driving scandal and Big Bang went around with drug scandals and sexually provocative concerts, fans shielded them saying it's all an artistic performance... while Hyuna can just put up a selca and get called all sorts of nasty things like "oh look she got a new nose" or how the color of her lips looks weird.

Block B can be disrespectful all they want in Thailand and fans will shield them saying they apologized so stop hurting our artists... but with T-ara's controversy, they're still getting hated to death.

Taeyeon and Sulli get into attitude controversies and people question who they are as human beings but INFINITE's Sunggyu can call a woman over the age of 30 a 'yomul' and fans will get up in arms asking why you're bringing up old news or if you ever even saw the actual broadcast.

Nam Tae Hyun can pay a valet with his money wedged between his fingers and fans will shield him saying his mom was paying or whatever but a female idol can get caught not smiling and she gets called a b*tch, unprofessional, told to quit her job.

IU and Eunhyuk can put up a selca together but IU's the one suffering sexual jokes while Seungri gets a photo of him strangling a woman revealed and fans will defend him saying he's an adult, he's human.

When their oppas get into plagiarism controversies, it's suddenly an homage, the rights were bought with money, there's no similarities... but wen a female idol gets into a plagiarism controversy, it immediately defaults to "those b*tches can't sing so they resort to stealing songs now".

3. [+519, -95] The media is just as much to blame. It's obvious that some of this stuff is made up by antis but journalists will take it and run with it in the media. The media is the one contributing to controversies like this... especially if you look at the recent girl group controversies.

4. [+39, -22] I watched Taeyeon's stage and I still have no idea what was such a big deal about it ㅋㅋㅋㅋ people are just quick to hate on anyone who's prettier than them, pathetic ㅋㅋ

5. [+37, -21] People keep calling Taeyeon out on her attitude but she finished the stage until the end. She got witch hunted over a gif during a part that wasn't even her focus but Seohyun's solo shot and she was just putting her hair back ㅋㅋ This is her fancam, you can tell she's smiling and not unprofessional at all http://tvcast.naver.com/v/457095

6. [+34, -7] Both Taeyeon and Sojin have been getting more hate ever since being involved with EXO. Both controversies are honestly not a big deal at all but they've been blown up and spread around to the point where it seems like they're trying to get their careers thrown out. But of course, people will always be more forgiving towards male idols.

7. [+31, -12] I feel like Taeyeon's getting way too much hate for just a few shots of her where she doesn't happen to be smiling

8. [+27, -4] It's not the same for male idols but female idols are always expected to be looking like they have a peaceful smile on their face and never even joke around with their members in case it gets interpreted the wrong way.. there are just a lot more expectations out of them. I bet being a female idol is one of the most extreme jobs in our country.

9. [+19, -6] I really do feel bad for female celebrities. Taeyeon got all that hate for not smiling just that one moment. I wrote that in another article and got downvoted ㅠㅠ

10. [+15, -1] Female celebrities will get hated no matter what. There's an algorithm to it. If you're pretty but not THAT pretty, people will always be hating you for it and questioning and debating whether you're pretty or not. Traditional beauties like Kim Tae Hee and Han Ga In can't be hated on for being not pretty so instead they get hated on for their acting.

11. [+15, -1] Why do you think that when a female idol screws up, she gets hate, but when a male idol screws up, he gets shielded??? Because the main fanbase of female idols are men... and when men face a problem, they face it objectively and try to figure the issue out with logic. On the other hand, the main fabase of male idols are women.. and women are emotional and only think from their perspective  and it suddenly becomes an issue of "I trust this idol, I like this idol, there's no way he could've done something like that, and if he did, I will find a way to be understanding"... that's why when an idol gets into a scandal, it's the female idol that gets the short end of the stick. At least in Korea, female idols need to really watch out for scandals.

12. [+15, -3] Stupid fangirls are just as much to blame. Male idols get into scandals and they cover it all up for them but when a female idol does the same, they get exiled from the industry. Stupid fangirls are the root of the problem.

ikr wtf? they were all just yelling about an unnie protection squad and forgot the real fucking issues. ofc there will be fans that try to protect idols but overall males idols get away with so much more disgusting shit like can they not see that? and in the long run male idols are forgiven much quicker and dont have their issues brought up as much. Nb is a mess

OP I can't see your photo.

Anyway, this post is full of truth. At least up until the last two comments, where things got way too misogynistic for me. i'm loling at "when men face a problem, they face it objectively and try to figure the issue out with logic", like when?? what is this fanfic?

although i'm not sure about the examples in post n.2, block b got a loooot of hate. mino is still getting hate. but in general there is def a lot of double standards (mostly i'm always laughing at k-netz praising beast as well-mannered idols when that's not the reputation they have on omona lmao)

also taeyeon's example just reminds me of taehyun who always has a bitchface on, even when he performs yet fans will excuse him saying he's a "diva" or whatever. let's not even forget that incident on the gs& concert. sit your untalented, ugly ass down. winner would be so much better without him

is there an actual article somewhere or is it just a headline + comments? idgi. i've seen #2 phrased in a dozen different ways from people here.

kind of sad lol @ "why?" in the headline though, like uh, we all know why. we all know there's a double standard. we all know it's because of rampant institutionalized misogyny. asking why just invites fuckplanks like # 11 & 12, i feel like these discussions should skip this whole why thing and start with "STOP THAT SHIT."

Fuck you 11 and 12.

Female idols get hate for being females, anything a woman does is lesser to a man in this world, unless is something that is wrong then it is three times more.

When I was younger I had a small argument with my mom, I asked her why she was so hard on me on my grades but was more lenient to my brother when I always went better in school and had higher grades than him, and she told me with the saddest eyes that sadly she was trying to prepare me for the real world, as the outside world would expect me to do at least twice as more than him if I we went to the same job position and to earn less money. She went on to explain to me how she had more education and job experience than many men who shared similar ranks with her in her company, and how she brought more profit to them, but she still got paid less.

It's so obvious the difference between female idols and male idols, it's depressing.
Male idols can get into all sorts of scandals involving marijuana, drunk driving, gambling, and plagiarism and still come out on TV just fine...
*cough* Big Bang / 2NE1 *cough*

Netizen 2 gave me life. And a lot of times when you pint it out people only see as attacking their male idols and that's not the point at all. The point is how over top they're with women. It's just a comparison.
All this makes my blood boil.

Date: 2015-07-21 09:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kjc48.livejournal.com
We all know why. Men hate women and women are taught to also hate women in fear that men will hate them. Aka because logic doesn't apply when the scandal involves a female.

Also: female idols are more known/cared about by the general public, while male idols just have to focus on appealing to their delusional fanbase.

yup yup yup double standards everywhere
with the western pop world, look at 1D ... I heard their concerts have been getting better as of late but there was a point in time when they were just so sloppy and clearly not giving a shit, if a girl group did that they would be dead

I remember seeing that concert film of theirs a while back and they absolutely seemed to hate their 'boyband' image and where fucking up things left and right and making fun of fans. I found it rather cringeworthy to watch.

This post is rather meager in content and why are we still askinf ourselves this question? It's the same old double standard. Women are expected to display pleasant behaviour and are not really allowed to stray. When they do, the punishment (in form of public outcry) is much larger than it would be with men. People expect men to be rude and aggressive from time to time and accept it; women are supposed to be kind and nice and subdued, anything else is not wanted.

It's stupid and lame, needs to change etc etc.

I can't speak for anyone else but myself, but when it comes to "scandals" whether its from a male idol or female idol, my attitude towards them will fit whatever the situation is. If its an idol caught drinking and driver, no matter if its a female or male should be held responsible and force to undergo whatever the punishment is. 100 hour community service, a four months banned from TV, pay a fine, jail time.

There is a real knee jerk reaction to treating female idols like the spawn of Satan when they act human, because let's face it, most of the time, its a normal human action that these girls are displaying and it ruffles the feathers of delulu people who thinks of these idols as pretty play things. I think there needs to be more talk about this, and not just from people online, but I would like to hear from some female idols and even male idols just to see if any of them are even aware of this. I think the only male idol(well he was at the time) whoever talked about how females in the industry aren't treated fairly was Lee Joon.
