Gyeonggi Province Police states that the mother and sons, victims of "3-Mother-Sons Case", are currently at a hospital in Gyeonggi.

On the noon of 17 July at about 6pm, NAVER cafe 'A body full of scars but still a beautiful woman' posted a message that the mother and sons of the 3-Mother-Sons case have been kidnapped. According to news in the cafe, the mother, Madam Lee (45 years old) 'was forced by family members to be taken to mental hospital' during the process of kidnap. This news spread quickly among the cafe members after it was posted, at the same time, there are people who provided Citizen Daily News with this information.

On 18 July, Gyeonggi Province Police on the request of Female & Youth Sexual Violence Special Search Team, posted the news that Madam Lee and her 2 sons are undergoing Mental Health Evaluation at a hospital in Gyeonggi, on the bulletin board of the Police Station main website. The police expressed that the news was announced to let the public know the truth, due to some netizens spreading untrue information with regards to the 3-Mother-Sons case.

The police expressed that the news regarding the police kidnapping the 3 mother-sons, and sending the mother, Madam Lee and 2 sons to be confined in the mental hospital is not true. On the 17 July, The police agent from Gyeonggi Children Protection Specialised Organisation, lawyer, Civic group in-charge & other related organisations etc participated in a Case Analysis meeting. After discussion, the conclusion was that it was better for the 3-Mother-Sons to receive consultation from a Mental Health Specialist.

The police officer-in-charge also expressed that the 3 mother-sons have not disappeared nor are they kidnapped. It is to ensure the safety of the 3-mother-sons that their exact location is not announced.

On 16 July, the Busan Family Court revoked the divorce case appeal made by the suspect of the 3-Mother-Sons sexual abuse criminal case, husband Mr Heo (50 years old) against wife Madam Lee. Therefore, Madam Lee and Mr Heo are divorced, and Madam Lee is awarded with the sons' custody. Pertaining to this, netizens are questioning "How did Madam Lee win the divorce case if she needs a mental health evaluation?" and request "Please provide the evidence for us to see that the 3-Mother-Sons are safe."

its weird that no international news site has reported about it. plenty of people emailed sites like CNN, BBC or other local newspapers, but not ONE site has published an article?
seems strange to me. something about this story smells fishy. at first i was like "poor woman", but the original post is now 2/3 weeks old, and no organisation has helped them? even the US embassy turned them away? .............

why would the us embassy get involved if no us citizens are involved and it's not an issue of asylum?

Date: 2015-07-20 11:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] oppameansit.livejournal.com
if they're dual citizens then it complicates the issue and makes it harder for the embassy to respond

if they're just us citizens then something isn't right considering how the embassy goes HAM on pretty simple issues

I am not sure, but I don't think they are korean citizens because of something like wanting to avoid the army, therefore them being born in the US. I could be wrong tho.

I'm pretty sure they were born ad raised in USA. They've only been based in Korea for 3+ years, and even then they go to Foreign schools (the dad doesn't want them to be able to communicate in Korean).

If publishing news works like in my country, I guess it's because they don't have any reporters there right now and also no source to copy an article from, since every single article about her got deleted. Makes it even harder to find out whether or not it's true, so they rather wait until something 'trustworthy' comes up.

I don't know why organziations aren't helping though. How are these organizations perceived in korea? Do people know about them? If Lee Jung Hee didn't reach out to them, it may explain why. Or maybe she did receive some sort of help from a local organization, after all she has to stay somewhere and eat something as well as her sons.
But that's all speculation on my end.

there are plenty of reports on international blogs now, they even have their own twitter, they uploaded videos on youtube - things that cant get deleted by the government or someone else.
almost every news station has an asian correspondent who can fly over to korea and do some research.

why is amnesty international not doing their job?

i feel like theres something that netizens (we) don't know

Maybe it's not interesting enough/reporters don't think its interesting enough for their readers to go through research work? I still remember where a dead dog from a celeb made the headlines a few months ago while the news of an abducted woman (!) wasn't even worth to be longer than 4 lines. Not even mentioned on tv.
A lot of tragedies happening outside my country don't get reported unless it involves people from our country /are 'physically close'/have some influence on our country.
I really can't say much about other countries' news outlets though and how they handle it.

A lot of people thought the yt vids were fake (which could theoretically be, making twitter accs also theoretically fake), reports from international blogs also wrote that nothing's been comfirmed about it (from the few I read), so my second guess would be, that it's too much work for them for a news that's potentially not interesting enough for the readers.
(Especially when they don't even report on human traficking in my country, underaged prostitutes and other stuff that sadly exists, like probably in every country. ). I'm also not very trusting of big charity organizations because more often than not they operate like a company than charity. But maybe my bad experiences made me too subjective and I'm not judging objective enough.

At this point there's a 90% chance that their going to die :"(
It's always sad when you realize the government is working against you instead of for you.

I hope USA also gets flack for this. Whenever a report decides to take a trip to NK, people start screaming "Land of the Free" and give no shits about diplomacy/international laws so why is it taking so long for the the USA to at least care about the sons???

this entire story is so bizarre and so heartbreaking. jfc how powerful is this ex-husband and his church?? but even then it's so strange that no international news sites have reported it when they hardcore report less important things??

this leaves me with a horrid feeling in my gut :(

What I'm trying to say is that the US embassy has to protect US citizens abroad, it's one of their jobs. So, I don't get why they won't help them
contrary to popular belief SK isn't a Christian country, Christians make up less then 30% of population and the government doesn't even recognize Christian holidays so I don't think SK gov would be quick to protect a church

I saw their video and the whole things is so weird

I get what you are saying. this whole thing seemed off for some reason. Then again the police has been involved and court hearings has been held which indicates that the story is true.

ariellm13 does a good job of explaining the probably lack of embassy action here http://omonatheydidnt.livejournal.com/16230463.html?thread=1294893887#t1294893887

As for the church its said to includes high ranking gov't officials in their members & donor roster giving the gov't plenty reason to protect it.

Technically, even if they are American citizens, the U.S. embassy can't do anything. They either need to be contacted directly from the people involved or a family member of the people involved. Past that, you would need undeniable evidence that this family is in immediate danger(like video that they are being held hostage). With evidence people have probably sent in, they would need to go through Korean channels. Why? Because even if they were raped by their father, their father is a korean man and he committed a crime on Korean soil. The Korean government has jurisdiction. I don't know how people think embassy's work but they don't handle crimes like this. Now if the embassy got enough complaints then it might contact the Korean government about the issue but as long as things check out on the Korean side, there isn't much they can do. Especially because the kids are with the mother(who is apparently not american). America has no claim to her and she has guardianship of the kids.

oop @ my late reply

the case I'm comparing this to is the Sathya Sai Baba scandal
Sathya Sai Baba was a famous and powerful religious leader in India who was close with the Indian gov'. He had abused an American boy for years but because it happened in India (most of it) the US gov couldn't do much, the embassy helped the family and tried to get the Indian gov involved
anyway that didn't work but they released a statement telling ppl to stay away from him since he liked young white boys and made sure the American news picked it up cuz many ppl would travel to India to be his students
The US is politically closer to India then SK

for them to ignore this family complete doesn't make sense....I just don't get why no one is helping these ppl

Date: 2015-07-22 02:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ariellm13.livejournal.com
Your reply basically entails reasons why the US isn't helping.

1: US citizens involved in this sought help. This guy wasn't arrested so they released a travel warning of "unconfirmed inappropriate sexual behavior by a prominent local religious leader". This was the most they did but the only reason they did it was because it happened to a US family and was reported by the US family.

2: Lee Junghee's kids are said to have american citizenship but she doesn't. She has to answer to the Korean government. Her kids are with her so they must also answer to the Korean government. The US can't step in because, technically, they are a Korean family.

Side note: People are saying that these kids don't have dual citizenship but they have no proof. They are kids who qualify for Korean citizenship and at their current age, their parents can make it so that they drop US citizenship or drop Korean citizenship or have dual citizenship. Just because they were born in america doesn't mean their father(who sounds like satan in the flesh) wouldn't keep them on dual citizenship so that they would be subject to the laws of the country they're in(i.e. Korea).

3: America is not as politically close with Korea and no matter what, has to be given permission to do things within the country. Also, going with the "They are US citizens" train of thought. The US would need there American names which I haven't seen or heard. Even then, their mom still doesn't have Korean citizenship so the US couldn't take them. As I said before, it would be a different story if LJH was American.
