Group GOT7 has made a comeback as the “Gentlemen” group. The title song of their 3rd mini album ‘Just Right’ has the lyrics, 'You don’t have anything to change, you are beautiful and perfect the way you are’, 'All I want is for you to stay the way you are’, lyrics that would add to a girlfriend’s confidence.

GOT7 did an interview while they were in the waiting room of the 7/16 broadcast of Mnet M!Countdown. They showed their thanks towards their fans for their support, and also how they felt about having a comeback in the midst of many comebacks and new releases.

▲ It’s been a while since your last comeback
BamBam Yes it’s been 8 months.
Yugyeom I’m excited about being on music broadcasts again after being away for so long. Meeting other artists also gives me energy.
Jackson I’ve been dieting. Since SBS 'Roommate’ I’ve lost 9kg.

▲ Your title song, 'Just Right’?
BamBam It is a hip-hop song produced by The Jackie Boyz, with the lyrics written by JYP PD. Rather than just focusing on looking cool while rapping, I really wanted to deliver the message in the lyrics.
Jackson I have four lines of rap but it took me 5 hours to finish recording. When we first started to record this song, JYP hyung told me, 'Jackson you are so bad at this’. It was different because rather than just looking cool, I also needed to rap in a way I would talk to a girl to comfort her. I learned a lot.
BamBam When we’re recording with PD-nim, it’s harder but also more fun.
JacksonThis style of rap is only done in our company. I learned so much. Thank you (Park) Jinyoung hyung. When he gave me the all clear, I felt like the sky was more beautiful.

▲ It must have taken all of you a long time to record
Youngjae If you’re the first one to record, you always take the longest. Jackson was the first one so that might have been why. It didn’t take me that long.
Yugyeom, Youngjae Everyone gets critized. That’s always the same. And it takes us a while to record as well.
Jackson It takes other members 30 minutes to an hour to record. It took me five hours.
BamBam The truth is I actually was praised by PD-nim. He told me 'Good!’ and “You’re doing well’.
Jackson BamBam always hears praise.
BamBam I’m JYP’s son.

▲ What you felt when you first heard the song
BamBam It was very fresh. All the verses were nice to listen to.
Mark Because we have to listen to the song so many times during recording, sometimes we get bored of our songs during promotions. But this time it’s not like that. We’re not tired of the song.
Jackson It’s very addictive.

▲ There are a lot of views on the music video and people really like the song (on 7/17 there were 5 million views)
Mark Many people said that it was cute. It’s only been three days since the music video release but it’s around 5 million views.
BamBam We’re so grateful for our fans, both in Korea and International.
Yugyeom When I watched the music video I felt that we were very fresh and trendy.

▲ On the other hand the it did not do as well on the charts
JB It was definitely not as good as we were hoping, but I also think that it’s not an easy thing to catch the attention of many people. I think if we keep trying and working hard, we will succeed.
BamBam Some people say the song is okay when listening to it, but if you listen to it while watching the music video, you might like the song a lot more. Please try doing both!

▲ What was the best praise you heard since this album release?
BamBam I heard that the music video is very cute and fresh.
Jackson Can I say something that I heard that made me sad? 'Jackson what is with your rap’, 'Your rap takes away from the song’, I heard things like these from Jinyoung hyun. I wasn’t able to rap the way he wanted me to. I’m sorry.
Jr. Our song is an addiction after an initial disappointment. We won’t force anyone to listen to our music, but we’d like it if people who like our music keep listening to it. We’ve had four title songs so far and compared to other groups, we haven’t had as big of an impact. However, we would like to keep trying.

▲ Jr.’s acting on 'My Love Eundong’ has received a lot of praise
Yugyeom We really like that drama. We’re not the type to watch a drama just because one of our members is in it, but we always watch that drama.
Jackson We’re really not the type. Yugyeom didn’t even watch 'Roommate’.
Jr. To be honest I feel like I didn’t do much. I’m still not satisfied with myacting. Also Yugyeom watches the drama to see Kim Sarang.
Yugyeom Whenever I see Jr.’s real self in the drama during adlibs, little cute actions, or how he talks, I think to myself, 'What is he doing’.

▲ If JB has any plans for acting
JB For now I want to focus on music. I still don’t have much confidence in my acting ability and I think that I personally am not ready for big roles. I want to prepare a little more, and also make a name for myself in music.

▲ Many artists are having comebacks this July. Do you have a goal?
Jackson I’d like people to listen to 'Just Right’ comfortably.
JB Rather than focusing too much on how it’s doing on the charts, we’d like to enjoy the music.
Yugyeom We’re going have fun while performing.
Mark The lyrics are for girls, I hope they feel better after listening to our song.
Jr. There are many sunbaes in the field. I’d like to hear even, 'That rookie group is pretty good’ from them.

▲ Anything you want to say
Jackson We’re so grateful for all the hard work by the producers. Also we’d like to thank Jinyoung hyung for writing the lyrics. I’ll try harder to rap and perform in the style that he wants.
BamBam It’s a very realistic love song so I hope people enjoy it.
Jackson It’s a song that I could listen to on vacation and feel good. Even if everyone’s playlist is 3000 songs, I hope that our song is in there.

aww, this interview made me a little sad—Jackson especially sounds really hard on himself. Poor boys, they all work so hard. I hope they have a hit soon.

"I'm JYP's son" ahahaha bambam.

my bby jackson seems really down on himself. he even lost weight on purpose when he didn't need to. i hope he doesn't blame himself for the song not doing well. i really didn't expect the interviewer to straight up ask about their reactions to the song not charting well.

they work so hard but they never seem to promote the right song. Can you imagine how fire it would be if they promoted Nice or something else. Even Back to Me--it has the bright feel of Just Right but not as ear wormy and preteen.

ugh. stay at it :(( they deserve a hit soon

Even though I don't care for the song, I feel bad for them because I know they always try their best but this song is a certified flop. Doesn't help that other groups are already dominating the summer with better releases.

they're clearly feeling the pressure. and with the girl group just around ther corner, maybe the pressure of having a hit soon is only getting bigger.

this whole interview made me so sad. you can really read the disappointment in their words. I was so hopeful this would be a hit with the track record JYPE has had this year so far - but this song is struggling to get into the melon top 50 :/ Imagine working so hard on a song and have people regard it as just "okay" :'(

I guess since because Miss A have suzy and JYP already is known himself, but then there's Ah Yeon who did so well with her song and she barely promoted, I hope they don't feel too upset that they're not doing as well as their labelmates, they just need a hit to really establish themselves.

Yeah, sometimes being popular doesn't necessarily mean the song is gonna chart well and vice versa. Jackson got relatively popular with Roommate and Jr is getting popular now with dramas, CFs, etc but if the public don't like the song no matter how popular you are that it's not going to do well. On the other hand...look at this hyukoh person. It seems that they're an indie artist but the public is loving the song for some reason and they're #1 with basically no promotions at all.

He's got on Infinity Challenge, that's the biggest promotion any artist can get.

JYPE didn't do a good job promoting before the song was released, there was more hype for SSI, but now they're trying to make up for it. But still, they're buried under the already established acts.

From: [identity profile] gray-fairy.livejournal.com
I don't want to sound like a total ignorant like I did in the Yoo Jaesuk post but I really don't know what's Infinity Challenge. I've heard something like that it's very important but I don't know how it works.

And yeah, I agree that they weren't really that well promoted. I've seen people here saying otherwise but not really, JYP basically pulled a SM and dropped a few teaser pics a week before the release without creating hype or anything. Not saying that way the song would have slayed because if the public don't like, they simply don't like, but at least it'd done better the first couple days of release. With bad promotions and 0 hype it just flopped from the first day.

infinite challenge is one of the korean variety shows with highest ratings and it's been on air for 10 years. it's the perfect plataform if an artist wants to get recognition from the general public because their audience is pretty diverse. and to be a guest on the show is seeing as a big deal because they don't usually use people outside the fixed cast.

and, like hyuk oh, JYP is one of the special guests for IC festival with IU, zion.t, gd&taeyang and another one that I can't remember now lol

IC is the most popular variety show, it's has been that way for a very long time. Its has been the top 10 most searched words for as long as I've remember. Every year they have music festivals, and the songs released during these music festivals gets automatic roof hits.

I feel so so bad for them :/. I didn't expect the song slayed the charts or anything, but at least that it did decently a la BTOB/Infinite but it was a total flop. People can say whatever they want but doing well in charts IS important. An idol group is not here only to make music for a small group of people as if they were an underground band, they need to do well with the general public as well or otherwise all their efforts are wasted / they're labeled unproductive and put in the basement forever. I seriously hate when people say that charts and sales aren't important and that "as long the fans enjoy the music and they're happy with their work is okay". The industry doesn't work like that ffs.

It stinks because it's somewhat difficult for international fans to stream music so that it has an impact on the charts - I see people buying streaming passes for others to help international fans stream on melon and bugs, but its just not working because the public isn't interested :(

They said they'd have a long promotional period..so I hope they gain /some/ recognition for this song :/ it's frustrating

Date: 2015-07-18 12:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gray-fairy.livejournal.com
Even if k-fans and i-fans streamed together that makes for like...5-10% of all the people streaming, so that's why groups like Suju always tend to flop even if they have a big fandom. Fans can stream hard but if the general public don't like the song, it'll be pushed down in the charts by other songs that the public is downloading/streaming, especially in daytime.

The still have plenty of time though. Just see how groups like Girl's Day, A Pink or EXID didn't start to gain some public recognition until 2-3 years into debut. Another example is BTOB, they just started to get some public recognition now 3 years after their debut and even so it's not like they're slaying the charts either. it doesn't help that the general public don't tend to care about boy groups because they consider that their main target is middle school girls while girl groups are for everyone.

Oh true. They have plenty of time to gain attention and with Jackson and Junior doing so well so far with their individual activities, it could really help them.

I do hope they get a title track (or can even promote a side-track) that JYP hasn't participated in - the songs that he's had no part in making always seem to be better lol. I'd love to see Collapsed One produce a title track for them, his tracks are always great

It might be my bias, but I think the song is one of the better summer release after a string of disappointing releases. The interview does sound sad, but from promotional videos and fan accounts they're enjoying this promotional period, especially Mark. The fan account today states that 300 people queued for pre-recording and Music Core actually let in 150, so the fan chants were amazing and the boys were super energized and smiley. Their fanbase is growing, their physical sales are growing.

They sold 22,000 after 5 days, and only one store had albums to be sold on the first day, compared to 18,000 after 5 days for SSI. They will have better physical sales than 2PM, only if they get public recognition with a hit song.

I personally like their song much more than many of the other summer releases, I find it more fresh and catchy, but sometimes I really don't understand the general public's taste tbh. I often find myself thinking "how the fuck is this bland shit slaying the charts?" like it happened last year with "Some". Pleasing the public is definitely not easy at all. I've even seen public friendly ballads flopping sometimes so...

Just Right is by far my FAVORITE title track from them, so of course the public wouldn't like it, lol.

I think they have to remember that they're still rookies. I know they're disappointed, but it takes time. I hope they keep working on it, and don't let it get them too down. Also whomever uttered the words lose weight to Jackson should get their foot caught in a bear trap.

I think Jackson's attitude is related with his athlete mentality to always strive better.
I want to see the video of this interview , i cannot believe Mark answered so many questions.
And I believe that Yugyeom is watching Eundong because of Kim Sarang...he seems to grow up becoming a noona's killer..

As for the song not charting well, I don't think it's a matter of the public not liking it, they just don't know about it? There was barely any promotion before the release (SIX teaser images and ONE video teaser like how??) so there wasn't any hype surrounding it.

Honestly, it's annoying that girl groups are releasing lackluster songs but still chart well and GOT7 finally got a good song but no one took notice :(

Yeah, it fucking sucked. That's basically what SM did with SHINee, so I'm shocked they charted so well and the song is still top 50 after 2 months. In GOT7's case tho, they have even less public recognition aside from Jackson and Jr so JYP should have put more effort in their promotions. I can't at some users here insisting that they were well promoted compared to Miss A when JYP did a really poor job with both (and don't get me started on 2PM promoting only for a fucking week in music shows...).

As for the lackluster songs charting well, girl groups are always more favored by the general public because boy groups are basically considered for "middle school girls" so they don't even give them a chance unless they have a more "badass" image or an "artistic" feeling.

Frankly, a win is pretty much guaranteed for any SM group's release regardless of how they are being promoted. I wish JYPE gave Just Right promotional teasers like they did for A because the teasers were great so the hype was amazing (the director did 2PM dirty so the company wasn't exactly at fault).

Well, most of the girl groups promoting right now are well known so that's in their favour. But the songs they released are meh. I guess we know now that not all chart toppers are good songs, they are merely by popular artistes.

Date: 2015-07-19 10:29 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gray-fairy.livejournal.com
True, it'd be weird that a SM group didn't win anything because they usually do decently digitally and great physically and in youtube views at least the first week.

Aside from being popular, the public is liking their songs for some reason because if not, they'd be way lower in charts during daytime. Lots of popular artists have dropped after the first couple of days so the public really don't care about how popular you are. If they don't like the song, it's gonna flop anyway tbh.

Hmm I've not been following the charts at all so I'm surprised it isn't doing well.
I don't follow GOT7 and this is the only one of their songs that's gripped me so I guess I just expected other people to feel the same.

A sad but a really honest interview. Personally I disliked Bambam's lines the most in this track but that's just me I guess lol. He uses throaty sounds with his words and it throws me off tbh. What he said was true though, I don't like this song enough to listen to alone, but the video is fun.

Clearly they're getting nervous with the lack of "hits" and lowkey maybe it's because I feel like JYP is just so...off his game? Basically I feel like if they promoted a song that JYP didn't have to personally make, then maybe it would sound better? lol idk how to say this without sounding rude.

It's really disappointing though that their title tracks aren't  NEARLY as good as the rest of their discography. Had they promoted Identify with Magnetic or Gimme, I would've ordered the album in the first week.

I wish I could tell them that slow and steady is sometimes better than explosive popularity. The goal is to have longevity career wise, and I think there are more chances of that if the fandom grows progressively with each comeback. I know they see that the rookies of the other Big 3 already have hits and that worries them, especially because this is their 4th Korean comeback, but it honestly is okay. They are rookies, they WILL get there, especially because that's the only thing they are missing.
