I think SHINee's version is a little more interesting as far as lyrics go, and I'm impressed that Jjong managed to completely change the meaning while keeping the original ending syllable in a lot of places - "Neomu Areumdaun" vs "I won't let you down" .

"Tonight is the night" always stuck out to me as not quite meshing with the rest of the lyrics, so I guess that's why.

As of late SM seems to be working directly with at least a few foreign composers, having them come to Korea & write music for them. London Noise (composer for View) has a couple pics on their IG taken at SM...

SM has people searching appropriate tracks, but more importantly these days I guess is that they actively employ foreign producers/songwriters to create songs for them. Did you see those posts on some Swedish singer tweeting about working with SNSD? That's how it works: SM didn't stumble upon a finished track of hers, she was flown to Seoul and then worked on a song specifically for GG. When finished, such tracks get rewritten into Korean/Japanese and usually the instrumentation is also tweaked. SM even organises 'bootcamps' for foreign songwriters: an executive'll say what kinda song they're looking for and the writers/producers get a day or two to make it happen (there's a Swedish documentary on YT that shows this proces, super interesting).

Oh wow, I mean, I know they take this stuff seriously but I had no idea how much effort went into it.
I remember hearing about that Swedish documentary and how apparently Ice Cream Cake had been worked on since 2012? Idk I would love to sit in a room with one of their in-house composers.

I'm always surprised that lots of songs released by SM groups are actually 2-3 years old. How do they manage to have those songs hidden all the time when nowadays everything can be leaked?

That's what I'm always wondering too, also how songs/albums rarely hit the internet before the official release. That happens often in the West yet in Korea....

Not entirely sure, but probably for domestic writers too? Kenzie/Yoo YoungJin/Hitchiker write and produce exclusively for SM and there are a few others that contribute regularly so... I'm assuming SM has pretty direct contact with them as well.
