It's weird because while studying abroad the hundreds of Americans were fit as fuck or just plain skinny
But in nyc at least ppl are overweight definitely like not obese but fat yes. If they are fit they are fit, not much in between. That one obese person has it rough though because it's so obvious. Overweight is kind of the new skinny and obese is the new "fat", ppl are so nonchalant about weight sometimes (like wear tight clothes) because they are confident and happy I guess.
it does seem to be an extremes thing. both the obese and extremely fit people i see tend to be american but now i'd associate the hyper fitness with the country more than the obesity and i wonder why others don't
IDK but somehow American are associated with fat somehow. My sister's friend went there and she emphasis how fat/obese most of the normal people there. :O
As a student entering the medical field, I can tell you that there is definitely an obesity epidemic in the US. The problem is that a lot of people don't realize this because being overweight has become so normal. So many people are overweight that we can't even recognize when someone isn't a healthy size anymore. I've had this problem too. When I worked at a doctors office, I was responsible for triaging patients, and that includes taking their weight and height to calculate BMI. People who I would consider a normal weight were usually overweight according to the actual scale. The people who I considered overweight were actually obese, and the obese were in reality morbidly obese. Just think about it. A couple of decades ago, the average waist size was around 25 inches, but now, its up to 32-33 inches. Sure because of the better nutrition, people are just bigger in general, but it's still apparent that the US is ballooning at an alarming rate, especially regarding childhood obesity. In fact, there are now more obese people in the US than overweight people, and that is a huge problem. We're getting fatter and fatter at younger and younger ages, and this is only going to continue to skew the perception of what body size is perceived as "normal" when in reality, it's still overweight
yeah but BMI isn't everything. It's a good starting point but you also have to look at fat % and other stuff. Like my brother would be considered on the overweight side but he's really buff and works out a lot.
BMI tends to be incorrect when you're dealing with the extremes, especially with height, but we're talking about society in general. Your brother is an exception, but you're probably not super buff and would therefore fit well with the BMI chart. The majority of the US is in the same boat as you in that the BMI chart is still applicable. America, as a society, is overweight and obese. Sure there are some people who are exceptions due to the variations in the human body we'll always find, but you can't discredit the scale just because they exist.
Idk I've read in a lot of places that it's good for looking at society health in the macro level but it shouldn't be the only determinate when looking at obesity on the individual health level.
Obviously not. The human body is too intricate to simply judge health based on BMI, but the point of this entire thread was to note that the US as a country is indeed facing an obesity epidemic and that we're growing continuously more and more blind to it. I wasn't talking about individual health, but rather the perception of what we consider to be a normal weight.
The fatter this country gets, the more accustomed we become to seeing people who are overweight, and we start considering that size as the normal weight. I was just pointing out to the person that just because she doesn't think that the US has a lot of overweight people, doesn't mean it's true. It's most likely that she isn't recognizing when people are overweight since everyone has become so accustomed to it.
BMI is a good base for a general group with no outliers like bodybuilders. . It was made for the general population. It might not work for you personally, but for the majority it will.
The United States has the highest percentage of overweight and obese people, which explains the stereotype. I think it's about 7 out of 10 Americans are overweigh or more than two thirds of the population.
he's studying abroad for a semester. he looks like he's having fun so im glad. i really hope he continues his korean girls react series and keeps all the original girls
For me it's the eyes. I distinguish between most of the Asian countries by their eyes, but I'm really good with Chinese, Japanese and Korean eye shapes, because I just see them so often. My cousin actually tested me once because she didn't believe me. I aced it *mwahahahahaha*
Indian guy has nooooo chill yo. Everyone was pretty honest I wonder why? Like some of the things said was ugh inducing and you wouldn't really say it out loud.
Here in the states whenever I see a korean person they aren't really stylish...like kind of tacky wearing too much flashy things at the same time and the girls are short even to me. The Japanese are the dead giveaways though, they dress like that girl with the oversized plaid shirt in the video. Similar hair too, very hipster styling even the older ones.
No comment on this one other than to say, stereotypes are one thing, but probably many nationalities/ethnicities would be guessed wrongly in reality. A lot of confirmation bias at work.
Anyway, watched the 'Americans' one and cracked the fuck up at the Japanese guy who saluted and said, "Racisto desu!". Points for being self-aware. XD
some of the comments were like, ummmm you don't need to be saying that out loud. but some of them were too true, like the backpacks. i died when they brought that up. also the sharing food thing is sooooo true. actually, i'm really possesive over food and i hated having to always share snacks and stuff. i dont mind sharing meals, but if i buy a bag of chips i just wanna eat them myself and not share with everyone around me and only end up eating like 5 chips.
First I was hesitant to watch that video because of the still, but then I did I got it. Some of what was said I also think like the food sharing and group/community, but then you can't really 'guess' as to what nationality or ethnicity someone is based on things like that.
I always say what I am first so I don't seem rude when I ask what ethnicity or nationality someone is and friends that I have, have said they like that more then someone just going 'oh your this. or this. no /this!/
I need to emphasis how Koreans doesn't eat spicy things. Kimchi surely not spicy. If you used to eat spicy foods, vacation at Korea will be a drag since all the food taste so bland (or without much taste). DX
No Im not joking. I used to eat really spicy foods and Korean foods (despite the variety of wonderful colors), taste somewhat bland.. The sause (for kogi) probably a bit spicy but thats it. :/
I don't know if I would say their food is bland but I agree, I definitely don't think their food is spicy. Most of the Koreans I talked to in Korea said they didn't like spicy food and were always surprised by the amount of Gochujang sauce I would add to my Bibimbap.
mexican boy :"they're like latin boys" why i'm laughing? loooool square backpacks and bb cream .... maybe because i used to work on bus terminal but they always looked so neat and clean compared to most tourists even the ones backpacking like 'how can you look so cool after 30 hrs in a bus' and half of things said here sounded racist ... but then again if you make that question is hard not to get at least one racist answer even not-racist people can sound racist ... sometimes is better not to ask
It's really stupid to assume one's nationality or ethnicity from the way they look, but then again there are some truths to stereotypes. One thing people said in this that i really notice myself is that Koreans tend to be quite loud, especially compared to Japanese people. It was so surprising for me when I went from Japan to Korea bc on the trains in Japan there's usually dead silence, at most people whisper to each other, but in the trains in Korea people are chatting and laughing quite loudly.
most of the korean commenters have been agreeing with what's been said in the video or even adding their own 'ways to distinguish koreans' in a self deprecating way lmao. i found the video pretty funny myself, none of the stereotypes in the video were particularly harming or offensive imo. the 3 types of korean girls' voices slayed me LMAO
For me personally I just noticed after having lived in Korea for a while that I am unable to identify what country Asians are from a lot of the time so I find it easiest to just ask and not just assume anything. And, to be honest, Asians seemed more.. racist (?) towards each other that anything. When I was living in a guesthouse in Busan I hung out with some girls's from Hong Kong and some Koreans, and they all just talked about how you can't trust Chinese people.. but then I just kept myself out of that conversation because I didn't feel that way about any of the Chinese people I met while over there.
