This is my first time posting, so I really hope I did this right. Please don't kill me if I didn't.

Date: 2009-10-04 01:33 am (UTC)They've sold couple 1,000 copies difference (BoA has sold more), both worked with top (well known) producers, received about the same amount of promotion (I live in big America and haven't seen either anywhere, so what ever difference supposedly exist, I haven't seen. In fact, I recall is BoA on MTV twice, Utada nowhere). Utada was already dropped by one American label and, form her sales, she is probably going to be dropped from the second one. So what is this advantage you speak of? If anything, stay away from American label is better, becuase to an American label you're just another act, but to SME/JYP, you are the act.

Date: 2009-10-04 01:49 am (UTC)Her contract with them is for three albums, something pretty much unheard of for new artists. You might not be aware of what record labels actually do, but I'll explain: Utada was able to get a fair amount of radio airplay (a huge chunk of what determines chart position) because Def Jam put her on numerous promotional compilations with their other artists that they send regularly to radio stations. That's how she got played on stations like Z100 in NYC (the largest radio station in the country) and reached the top 100 for Billboard pop radio. Utada also was able to work with producers like Timbaland, The Neptunes, Tricky and Stargate (four of the biggest producers in American R&B). The advantage she got was huge and that's probably why her album sold twice as much as BoA, and her radio spins were nearly 5 times as much.
BoA didn't work with any huge producers. Her album sales were dismal, and she didn't even make it on any Billboard mainstream charts, and her chart position was laughable (#127 vs. Utada's #69). And MTV Iggy =/= MTV. She also faced the issue of many retailers not even carrying her album because it was not from a major label. Record labels handle those types of things, which is why Utada's CD was seen in every music retailer in the country.
I'm sorry but there is no logic in thinking that not having a record deal with an American company isn't detrimental, or even helpful.

Date: 2009-10-04 02:48 am (UTC)Second, as far as retailers go, I went to a bunch of "major retailers" websites and according them, both cds are available online and in "limited" stores. So, I didn't see a difference. Maybe you should define "major retailer."
Third, this is Utada second album. Do you know where her first placed? #160. Technically speaking, that mean BoA's first is still head of of her. And that one was also on official record label. Though I laugh, becuase 160, 127, and 69 are all terrible and very much could only have 100 amount of copies different. Also, the last numbers I saw (which could be wrong, but were after the rerelease), BoA had caught up to Utada. Though, I do believe, if you add in digital sales, Utada>>>BoA.
I guess my point in the end, is it doesn't makes a difference. Neither are making big right. But the record company was a mistake, becuase her works are credit as Island Records and Def Jam at difference times, but they're both under Universal and now merged, but Universal was doing some funky things with them in 2005-2006.

Date: 2009-10-04 03:05 am (UTC)And are you really trying to judge airplay and TV exposure based on what you personally saw/heard? Because that's pretty ridiculous. I'm going by what was reported by official media tracking websites, which show BoA's spins being nearly 1/5 of Utada's.
As for the in store availability, there were hundreds of reports of BoA fans not being able to find her CD in any stores, including major retailers like Best Buy and Walmart. I just looked on Best Buy's page, and BoA's album is listed as "unavailable" in every store in New York City. Utada's album was listed as "available" in 60% of them.
Utada's first album charted lower, but it sold 55,000 copies. Yes, that's nearly 5 times as much as BoA's first album. So no, BoA's album did not do better.
