My sister's Korean friend said that 2PM is already considered as 'ajusshi-dols' in Korea and I was all NOOO THEY'RE STILL YOUNG!! but then I imagine them beside EXO and well.. cries.
lmao, wtf. They're only in their mid 20s and the ironic thing is that some EXO members are in their mid 20s as well...
Edit: I checked their ages and they range from 25-27 in international age and 26-28 in Korean age. If you're already considered an ahjusshi/ahjumma while still being in your 20s, people aged 30 and onwards are living fossiles I guess ._.
I guess it's the image they project: grown men in their prime dancing sexily to some music. Pretty close to Shinhwa's image. Plus they're HUGE like SHINee members are so skinny it's hard to see that they're actually of the same age lol.
Well, SHINee are actually a bit younger overall. Like Chansung is 2PM's maknae and he's older than all SHINee members except Onew and he's only younger than Onew for 2 months anyway. SHINee are currently 21-25 while 2PM is 25-27 but I agree that SHINee is just on the skinny side tbh.
Welp I tend to forget that 2PM's maknae = SHINee's oldest xD since they debuted in the same year. I guess you can say they just have a more matured image than say... Big Bang.
Yeah, I've observed that lots of people think that SHINee are way older than they actually are because they debuted 7 years ago, but they're basically the same age as EXO. It's just that they debuted being kids, the oldest was barely 18 and the maknae was 14, I barely see rookie groups debuting with an average of 16 y/o like SHINee debuted anymore. Not even Seventeen lol. I read some anon message on a tumblr blog I follow saying that "SHINee is too old for the idol shit now" and the owner of the blog was like: "well, then I guess that 95% of kpop idols are old then because even many rookies are same age/older than some SHINee members". Idk if they were trolling or if that person was just that ridiculous.
Yeah, they've been around for so long they seem older than they are. I probably didn't feel how young they were back then because I was younger. With Seventeen debuting last month with a 99' member, how young everyone is just hit me like a bus. I do feel like they're breaking away from the typical idol image with their new title song. It's not really an immediately recognisable kpop song, but it's definitely good. Not that this has anything to do with their age, more of a testament to their experience.
At first I thought you were talking about 17 and I was like: "new title song?" "not typical idol image?" and then I realized that you were talking about SHINee lol. Yeah, View/Odd is such an awesome album, with a fresh but at the same time mature/sensual sound barely seen in Kpop. I'm really glad that it did so well despite SM's shitty promos and I hope the repackage do even better.
Yep, like can we not just apprieciate all different ages and maturity levels and what they bring to the table individually? Why does everything have to be so samey samey?
Yes I've noticed. I only came back to kpop end of last year after a 2-3 year hiatus (not intentional) and I noticed a downward spiral of appreciation with my fav groups. There seems to just have been an influx of intensely popular fresh blood (like for instance, EXO). It's a real shame.
I can't help but love SEVENTEEN, they just seem so precious with everything they do. And god damnit they've each got more talent in their big toes than I have in my whole body.
lol the thing is that EXO is not even that much of "fresh blood" anymore, they're a 3 y/o group already but since Growl hit big in 2013 they've been the trend for 3 straight years. I've been noticing some people moving to BTS lately though, but yeah, EXO is still going super strong.
I don't think 2PM is underappreciated though. They maybe aren't as popular as they used to be, but at least they're doing way better in charts this time than with their last 2 comebacks. And also, some veteran groups like Big Bang, SNSD or SHINee are still doing great both in charts and fandom-wise so considering all the competition and how saturated the kpop market is, it's not that bad.
You have a point, of course. I still have timelines all screwed up because it takes ages to catch up to what happened in that many years while I was away. I think that's all I meant is that I don't see the same kind of hype about 2PM as I used to. Doesn't mean they're not doing well for themselves. I'm so happy SHINee didn't fade into oblivion once EXO hit the scene (because fans can be fickle once a group jumps into the scene and gains hottie status), they're still doing good.
2PM (and basically any group older than 5-6 years) would need a /super hit/ to become a trend again, kinda like it's happening with BB and their releases this year and even so their variety appearances aren't really being that successful. I heard that one of their variety appearance got the lowest rating ever for that show, but well, at least chart-wise they're still /the/ wall amongst idol groups so it's okay.
SHINee actually lost a lot of fans over the years due their long ass hiatuses in Japan and EXO/other groups debuting but fortunately, the success of this comeback made that lots of ex-shawols came to the fandom again and they apparently gained a lot of new fans too, not only due this comeback, but also due Taemin and Jjong's solos and that's the most important, because it's new fans the ones always creating the most hype. I'm also glad these new fans have a more competitive/ambitious attitude because I swear older shawols are the most pasive/conformist people I've ever seen. At least these new ones fight for good charting, good sales, popularity, etc...like all fandoms do, I've never understand the "as long I like them and their music idc about sales/popularity" attitude that older shawols have when keeping a high popularity and good sales IS neccesary for a group to survive amongst so many old and new competitors.
TL; DR: the market is too saturated nowadays and older groups NEED to release smash hits and rebrand their image to stay relevant/popular.
Yep, I remember SM pushing SHINee in Japan. It was a constant source of irritation to the fandom (except the lucky Japanese of course).
Yeah that attitude is bizarre to me. "Oh I don't care about sales, I'll just love them whatever." Really? Will you not care when they drop from mainstream because they no longer make music that sells? It's odd that, really.
The market is super busy now, I have a really hard time keeping up with the new groups. I've just given up, mostly.
Which it was a really bad move because that made them lost a lot of fans to new groups. Kpop market don't really wait for anyone and if you don't manage to stay relevant, you can basically kiss your career goodbye. SHINee could have been as super big as their labelmates if SM had pushed them more in Korea and gave them more public friendly/mainstream music since the beginning, like they did with DBSK, SNSD, EXO, etc...It's never late to get big anyway, but SM should give a shit first. Look at how they barely promoted View at all, yet they managed to do great digitally and month and a half later they're still top 20 in most of charts. Imagine with more hype and better promotions. It could have been a legit super hit, but...SM stays messy as always.
And yeah, I'll never understand that attitude. I've even been called "greedy" by other shawols. So I'm greedy for wanting my favorite group to be on top? Isn't that what all people want for their faves after all? Especially if they're legit talented and hard-working enough to deserve it. Another of my favorite excuses is "I prefer they don't get too big because I want them to keep doing quality music". As if "mainstream" and "quality" were mutually exclusive. They remind me to those people thinking that indie movies are neccesarily better than blockbuster movies. It's ridiculous tbh. The thing is that this is not 2008-09 anymore and the market keep getting more and more saturated, with everyone and their mom pulling out good to excellent music and rookies being better trained than ever, so like I said older groups really NEED to have smash hits in order to stay relevant if you don't want to end like Kara, T-ara, etc that basically nobody check for them anymore. Another excuse is: "they're happy how they're now". Yeah, that's why they repeated over and over again that they wanted Odd to be "loved by the general public" huh? Don't these people realize that they would be underground singers and not SM idols if they were okay just with playing music for a small crowd of fans? And basically everyone wants to do as better as possible. Nobody wants to be a B-C student when you can be an A+ student, but maybe that's my greedy ass talking lol.
I just don't think I'll EVER understand SM. They remain an utter mystery to me with their weird ass decisions I can't make heads nor tails of. SHINee have been getting fairly consistently better, imo, and it winds me up a bit that they're just not promoted. I love their harmonies and stage presence and I can see that the audience love that too, but SM just kind of leaves them to release something and makes a half arsed attempt at promoting, if that. Odd is such a good fucking album it deserved a lot more from SM.
Anyway, I'll stop whining about SHINee in a 2PM post. /smacks self
P.S. Can I just say I love your long replies. (Genuinely, I mean.) I usually write essays but today has fucked me up and I can barely string a sentence together.
No one I know irl actually like 2PM anymore and they're all going for the new faces, which saddens me because they're missing out on all the fun that was Wild Bunny still waiting for that last episode and well, everything about them. The industry is so saturated tho so I do see how 2PM gets pushed to the backseat and the new faces getting more recognition. And the new faces are definitely attractive....... coughsseventeencough
I knowww! It has been a long time since I've actually liked EACH member of a group right from the start. Prections <3
Tbh I don't think it's just the new faces but also the way JYP promotes them. I feel that there's barely been any hype/media play surrounding this comeback, they're barely promoting on music shows, etc...Look at how YG is pushing BB like crazy this year or how SM have 3 MVs and a bunch of variety shows appearances ready for SNSD. Older groups (or more like their companies) need to step up their game and do everything to stay relevant since the market becomes more saturated every year with lots of new (and very talented/interesting) groups debuting. Give 2PM another public friendly bop like Again&Again or Heartbeat and push them more in shows and they'll be super popular again.
I do get a vibe that whenever they come out on shows it's more like an individual promotion rather than a group thing. Another AAA would be amazing, but idk if they want to go in that direction again. However, more shows in efforts towards promoting their songs would be nice. What is JYP doing -.-
He's probably done all his growing height wise. I'm 5'0" so height is not an issue for me. He is a full hottie to me. Which is unfortunate for my ability to keep calm.
Isn't he like 18-19? I know people (especially boys) that have grown a few inches until 21-22ish. One of my classmates in uni went from 174 to 181 from 18 to 21 so I think it's possible but if not it's okay anyway. Jjong is a shortie too and I find him the hottest of the group lol.
Since when did Jun. K become so damn hot? Holy shit o_o. lol @ Taec. Let me be your friend with benefits. This song has grown a lot of me and I think it deserves better chart position.
Oh Taec, I love that I can always count on you for the funny. He's supposed to be just this sexy hunk but really he's clearly just a dork. Not that you can't be both of course.
Um....Some of the moment where more "uh ??? You want to fight with me ??? Come if you dare !!!! " than "uuuum you sexy thing !" ! But it was fun anyway !=)
