BIGBANG T.O.P Debuts His Singing on “Sketchbook”

On June 5, BIGBANG made an appearance on “Yoo Hee Yeol’s Sketchbook,” their first time on the show as a full group. During their interview after their performance of “BAE BAE,” Yoo Hee Yeol asks what the group members are good at.

T.O.P, who is last, is probably the most surprising of them all. When T.O.P’s turn comes around, Seungri says, “He is really good at singing.” Taeyang jumps in, and says, “The tone of his voice is a lot like Jeon In Kwon when he sings.”

The members then ask T.O.P to sing the song “Please” by the band Deulgukhwa (vocals: Jeon In Kwon).


T.O.P says, “It’s not that our voices our similar; that’s not possible. It’s just that I really like Deulgukhwa’s songs.”

He continues, “I do get really shy when I sing. Rappers usually get shy about singing…”

“So you can overcome it here,” says Taeyang, and Yoo Hee Yeol agrees, offering to play piano for T.O.P while he sings.


While singing (Deulgukhwa’s “Only That Is My World“), however, T.O.P gets singing stage fright and is unable to continue, although Taeyang tries to help him out a little bit.

He says, “Honestly, I was definitely going to sing because [Yoo Hee Yeol] was playing for me, but it was more nerve-wracking for me than our first debut performance. I think this is the first time I’ve trembled like this.”

There's some autotune on Oh Mom (and Of All Days), especially around the high notes. I think he has a nice voice but not necessarily the range to hit those notes.

I don't know why people act like he never sang a note. (I actually prefer him trying to sing in a conventional RnB voice on "She Can't Get Enough" than his more recent singing styles where it's basically "TOP has a low voice, and people think that's sexy. So let's have him melodically talk or whisper-sing something in the background")

No way, avoiding all eye-contact is the best thing when you're that nervous. If there aren't eyes all over you it's so much better. You think having friends egging you on helps but it actually makes the situation a lot worse even though it's appreciated, lol.

I was sweating myself and laughing; I know that feeling. I am extremely shy/prone to anxiety and just talking in front of people is triggering and I would cry when I was younger if I was put on the spot for something. I like his voice, though. He does sing sometimes if you listen closely to some of Big Bang's songs-he's a nice backing vocal to everyone's higher pitch. At least he had the cowboy hat to hide behind, lol.

It's not like we haven't heard him sing before? He sings the background vocals in Doom Dada, Blue, Love Song, Loser....? Probably even more.

But he was nervous, and I don't wanna watch it if it'll make me uncomfortable. I'm far too sensitive when it comes to others' stage fright, lol.

This was super painful for me to watch. I have the same reaction when put on the spot and I've never had that many people expect something of me. UGH! I feel sorry for him.
It was lovely of Taeyang to try and help but had it been me it would've made it a thousand times worse because I would've felt even more pressured to do it.

Awwwww. Poor dear, that looked painful. But his voice really is so lovely, he has a gorgeous tone and I adore the parts in Big Bang songs when he sings. I'd love to hear him sing more of course but in situations where he's more comfortable so he can actually enjoy it.
