Why this apparently simple make up removal tutorial got over 7 million views??

"I feel like many people these days don’t use makeup to add a little glitz and glam to their natural beauty, but rather to change their beauty. Recently, a YouTube video of a South Korean woman removing her makeup from one side of her face went viral because of the blatant contrast between the right and left sides of her face. More specifically, the real noticeable difference was her eyes. The side of her face without makeup revealed that her eyes were actually significantly smaller than expected. I’m sure that the majority of the 5.7 million people who have viewed this video think this eye-enlarging “illusion” was done entirely with only makeup, but there are actually two other factors that went into creating this look.

The smoked-out eyeshadow and cat-eye-shaped eyeliner were definite factors that made her eyes look a lot wider, but the two extra factors that most Americans may not know about are the circle lens and double eyelid tape. Circle lens are contacts that are very popular in Asia which are essentially contact lens that have a wide, black circle that perfectly surrounds your iris. The look that it achieves is close to the eye of an anime character — wide, innocent and cartoon-like.

(Eyes lens effects)

As for the double eyelid tape, it can give vertical dimension to her otherwise monolid eyes. Double eyelid surgery is actually quite popular in Asia, specifically in South Korea, where one in five women have had cosmetic alterations done. The surgery cuts and folds the upper eyelids to create a subtle crease above the eyes and ultimately widen the eyes. However, for those who can’t or didn’t get double eyelid surgery, they can achieve that look through slightly rounded clear pieces of cosmetic tape that give the same wide-eyed look of double eyelid surgery.

(Double Eyelid Tape Tutorial)

When you watch the video, don’t be fooled because she didn’t achieve her look solely with makeup. I feel like many people get intimidated by the power of makeup and are quick to label it as “deceptive,” but there is definitely more to cosmetics than meets the eyes. As for criticism that goes along with the viral video, there’s a wide variety of comments that trail underneath. Some are definitely critical, while others are supportive. One thing’s for sure: the power of makeup and beauty tools together are impressive"

LMAO Expose ya-self!

This doesn't beat the Taiwanese one from years ago (I think it was an entire tv show).

I've watched too much Rupaul's Drag Race to be surprised by these make up transformations any more.

Also, anything beyond 'natural looking' make up, I consider an art form and people that call it deceptive can fuck off.

I've never gotten the "deceptive" thing. Are humans with lips that are shinyy and eyes that are ringed with black/gray/brown something that happens naturally on their planet? And that isn't even getting to the dramatic/artistic looks.

Watching the eyelid tape tutorial and it looks soooo painful when she's pushing it in omg

As for the make up removal video, the contrast between the color of her face and neck makes her look clownish.

what kind of miracle cleanser is that, i'd have to use at least 5 of those cotton pads to remove that amount of makeup

i have a tiny double eyelid and a regular double eyelid and it's the worst when i try to put on makeup and make it look the same size. makeup gurus/artists are amazing.

God, I'm the same. I thought I was an anomality because i've never ever seen someone else with a monolid and a double eyelid. For a while, i had resorted to only putting eyeliner on my lower eyelid. I have found some kind of trick that's more or less acceptable, by putting eyeliner on the top eyelids, but only from the center to outward. It's still not enough to make both eyes look even, but it's the best concession i have found for the moment. Do you know a makeup guru that has a trick for our type of eyes?

makeup is an art and definitely can be empowering, but there's always something sketchy and patronizing about the transformations the western media chooses to highlight when it comes to asian beauty...

my favorite thing is people doing kpop idols make up transformations where they use false eyelashes glue to create monolid

As a cosplayer I use circle lenses a lot, but they only really look good with full make-up and styling. Otherwise they're too alien-like and uncanny valley for daily wear.

Date: 2015-06-02 07:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] impatiences.livejournal.com
i really hate the way circle lenses look in general, because of that uncanny valley-ness and how much it takes away from people's eyes. (altho if you enjoy that and wearing them makes you feel good, you do you)

I want some day to get my eye makeup done by a professional. I never like how eyeshadow looks on me, and I let friends who are really good on themselves to try on me and always looks worst that if I only use eye mascara. I love to try make up but something fails.

I always have trouble getting my head around how people can spackle on that amount of black eyeliner and make their eyes look bigger, I have big eyes but always end up feeling like even a dark smoky eye makes them look smaller.

Date: 2015-06-03 02:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] princetabi.livejournal.com
that's how i feel about eyeliner too. I have very large eyes and they're almond shaped but eyeliner makes them look so much smaller imo and most people wear eyeliner to look like they have bigger eyes. Maybe bc I have a good amount of visible eyelid, it gives the opposite effect of someone who has smaller lids.

Her eyebrow though...
Her makeup game is strong
I'm not into wearing that much makeup because it shows, I mean it's great on camera but IRL it look like a mask and I don't feel too good about that, I'm more into natural look
But I'm forever admirative of people with that kind of skills

All I could think of was stop rubbing on your eye. It's not good for your skin. Then when that passed I was wow, this girl has some skill with make up.

circle lenses creep me out but honestly this girl is an artist. make up is an art form. Although I do want to advise her not to rub so hard when she's taking off her make up omg D:
