original song: That Man, That Woman - Vibe

source: lemiel dear

i think he got on the show because in one of prev episodes kim gura swore one of the singers is sungjae and even bet his mc position :p
funny that's he's not even the second best vocal in btob. he struggled a bit in the falsetto part mostly because he was nervous i think

one of the select few things cube does right is casting... sungjae's not a great singer, but way above kpop average. nice.

His voice is super versitile. I wasn't sure if it was him for a second. It was beautiful!!! Kahi and Sungjae!

To be honest, from a singer's perspective, I actually consider Sungjae one of, if not the best singer in BTOB. He's not a tenor, this is true, so he can't hit the high notes some of the others can, but Eunkwang/Changseob/Hyunsik also can't hit lows nearly as richly as he can and as much as I adore BTOB's vocal line-up, the power vocals can be incredibly inconsistent - Eunkwang in particular goes flat on a lot, lot, lot of his belts these days (much more than he used to, which I'll always wonder about) and can be incredibly pitchy at times, Hyunsik has terrible breathing technique and frequently is gasping for half a line in live performances, Changseob tends to also be quite pitchy. Basically, #justiceforsungjae'svocals tbh! I've seen him have his bad moments too but overall he is the least likely to struggle with staying on pitch.

agree with all of this. sungjae stands out as one of those people in kpop who you know is gonna perform really well 9/10 times. his vocals are very strong and consistently steady in live perfs

I think a lot of people like Sungjae get overlooked in kpop in favor of less consistent singers with higher range. I would honestly rather a solid, smooth performance to a pitchy one with lots of high notes, straining, etc. A lot of the kpop idols known for singing are really just known for high notes and have otherwise awful technique. Not to mention a lot of them aren't actually very reliable when it comes to hitting them - because most of them are being forced to sing beyond their natural belting range.

you're completely right

With Eunkwang, I have to wonder if he's A) a smoker or B) just exhausted his vocal cords with the constant belting in the top of his range. We all know idols don't really get to sleep or eat as much as they should and that means their vocal cords don't really get the time and nutrition they need to heal properly - because even with good technique, singing is still working a muscle and that muscle needs to be able to repair itself after use, or overuse in the case of idols. It's a shame because I was so impressed by him at debut and he's still obviously talented but he does definitely seem to struggle in a way he didn't before.

Hyunsik is good but I've never considered him particularly great. He can carry a tune solidly and has a god-given pretty tone but has just always been so unpredictable live, even in performances where he doesn't have to dance. Changseob... also super inconsistent but sometimes I think it's just because he doesn't really give a shit anymore LOL he can be really good when he actually focuses. Sungjae is the only vocalist I feel has actually gotten better rather than worse (Eunkwang, Changseob) or just stagnate (Hyunsik). He was already really impressive for his age at debut (couldn't believe he was only 17) but I never would have dreamed he'd become their most solid live performer.

That's true haha I guess I've just started assuming every male kpop idol is a smoker because it seems like... a solid 80% are, unfortunately LOL. Singers that smoke frustrate me so much (probably because I follow all the rules to protect your voice but still have a lot of issues because of chronic sinus issues...)

I guess there's just something about Hyunsik that never stands out to me and never has. I can't put my finger on it. He's ridiculously good looking, intelligent, charming and talented but he (along with Minhyuk, strangely) always catches my attention the least. You know whose vocals are underrated? Minhyuk. Man, what I'd do for him to be singing instead of rapping. I just really love the softness of his voice. I don't know much about Sohyang but I'm startled to hear people have mixed opinions on her vocals! A fellow music nerd friend of mine linked me to this video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq7mryVuE4Q) last year and I've been fangirling her technical abilities ever since LOL. She's just on this extreme level of technical ability that most people only dream of.

It's funny you bring up Sungjae's pants ripping incident because I almost mentioned it in my previous comment, haha. I was really impressed by him managing to keep it together for like 50% of that performance because I would have DIED. BTOB just have an insane amount of vocal ability compared to most idol groups. Ilhoon is the only one that can't really carry a tune LOL and ironically, he's my bias which makes no sense for a singer but alas. Peniel's no great vocalist but he can hold his own better than a lot of other so-called "useless" idols out there, he's certainly not tone deaf.

In the bits I've seen from this show, the singers wore somewhat cool looking masks. Then he gets that foolishly smiling bumble bee, lol

Lmao ikr I didn't really think much about the mask until a friend of mine said, "I think this is really Sungjae... You know, bc of the mask."

I can't believe that's Kahi. She's always been one of the stronger singers in After School but the musical training has done her voice wonders. She probably wouldn't have been able to sing this song when she debuted.

Both are pretty good.

I think Sungjae is one of my favourite kpop singers...after Junsu and Kyuhyun.

We must have identical taste because you just praised like, three people in my top ten of kpop singers haha. I'm quite fond of the man in your icon as well.

Oh!! Really?
I'm curious who else is on your list.

For me, I also Brian (FTTS) and 2AM voices.

My #1 is Kyuhyun. His voice just melts me.

I think Sungjae will improve with time and he'll be very good in the future.

That was a really impressive performance! Wow. Some of those notes are very challenging, very high. I love Sungjae's voice best when he sings low notes - his low notes always hit me right in the heart, but he still sounded really good here.
